Tuning To Daystate Red wolf experts... Safari problem and need your help

I've sent a email to Daystate fiew days ago about the issue that I have with my brand new Redwolf Safari .25 cal (only 3 weeks) and I will throw it out here may be you can help me.

“Last Sunday, I was shooting with my rifle, I shot two magazines on high power, everything was going good, then I loaded a pellet, pressed the trigger and it didn't fire.

Gun has 216 bars and the battery is charged, the display shows air and power but the rifle is dead.

I’ve checked the battery connections and checked that the battery is fully charged.

I’ve tried to "wake the rifle up" by cycling the safety and closing the side lever quite a few times but it doesn’t fire. The side lever and the security button became heavier than before when I actioned them.

When I cycle through the power levels, for example from high to low, and I close the side liver, I don’t hear the sound that confirms that the program was accepted, the screen stays blocked in program mode (showing: program mode – low power) then it turns off: nothing on the screen.

I took off the battery and reconnected it, the screen shows everything but it won’t fire, and a few seconds later the screen turns off.

I checked the screw that fixes the GCU in place (without touching anything in the GCU block), it was tight, I loosened it a little bit, then I connected the battery, when I move the back of the GCU block for about one millimeter forward, I see a red light that turns on and I was able to access to the program, change the power plan, hear the sound that confirms that the program was accepted and I can fire the gun. When I put the GCU block in place with or without tightening the screw that holds it, red light turns off (even if I switch the security button to the right) and when I try to change the program mode it doesn’t confirm it by any sound, stay blocked as explained below, the rifle don’t fire and the screen runs for two or three seconds then it turns off.

Please help me to fix this problem. My local dealer doesn’t have service maintenance, and in Tunisia we don’t have gunsmith or engineer specialized in daystate air rifles.

Best regards

Walid

Daystate answered me :

“Hello Walid, and thank you for contacting Daystate.

I have already responded to you friend "xxxxxx" who seems to have had the same enquiry as you, but now rectified.

Your reseller is best placed to help you directly or indirectly.

There is no common or recurring issue that I can link to your enquiry therefore somewhat difficult to point you in the right direction other than your reseller who has responsibility to help you irrespective from where and when purchased. We simply do not hear or see issues with Safari so difficult to know where to begin other than your seller making good.

Please note each and every reseller irrespective of country is both fully responsible for warranty and repair, and so there would never be a need for you to attempt a direct return as would not be necessary, and difficult. Rest assured, resellers are very well supported by factory as required, and any issue must be handled by them.

Honestly, I wasn't disappointed by the Daystate reply since I was just seeking for an advice to fix it and I know that it isn't a big problem (just a mecanical one) and my dealer doesn't have a service maintenance to repair it.

I know the problem is in the safety block (the G.C.U 2 works perfectly) because the bolt safety pin (part n°33) is blocked and it doesn’t return to his initial position and it can be because of the safety pin spring (part n° 32) that doesn't works like it should, so it doesn’t allow the gun to fire and work correctly.

- Does anyone had the same problem?

- How can strip the safety block?

- Do you know how to fix this problem (photos or videos)?

Thank you for your help.

P.S: my friend gun works has the same problem but it returns to work but it self without any kind of repair.

I don't own one so I can't be of any help for repairs. I've tried to get help from Daystate before and they always refer me back to the reseller. So I am surprised that Daystate would use a reseller who had no means to repair the rifles that they sell.

Regardless, I think you should go back to the reseller for help. If they have no way to repair it, they should replace a faulty gun with a new one. Working on it yourself will likely void your warranty altogether.

Best of luck to you.

Manufacturer support on European air rifles is, at best, tedious and slow. I think the best approach is to get confirmation from the dealer that any warranty repair or replacement will be handled by the dealer, on site. I believe some makers have master dealer or distributor organizations, and warranty work might be handled by them, rather than the reseller/dealer. In any event, it pays to understand the system. If a dealer says, "we'll make it right", what does that mean? AOA has been capable and timely in any warranty work I have needed. A couple of other dealers with whom I have had experience were both incapable and unresponsive. I place the primary responsibility for this on the maker. A manufacturer should have strict agreements within its distribution network regarding warranty work. I'm sorry for your situation Walid. This may be an example of a dealer that should never have been allowed to sell Daystate products.

I really appreciate you to share your experience.

It reinforced my decision of never buying an electronic rifle.

A smartphone has to be replaced in one or two years approx. It is an accepted reality. But a Red Wolf cost a lot more than a smartphone to end in a waste basket.

Thank you, thank you!

It looks to me that the topic starter is experiencing a mechanical problem rather than an electronic problem. Would that insight change your mind into never buying another FX? (or any other mechanical airgun for that matter?)

My problem was similar but was different enough to be unrelated. Anyway, here goes.

I experienced a sudden power drop but could still shoot the rifle. I also had the loss of feedback sound from changes in program settings. This was traced back to a bad battery connection. The two wires that come from the GCU were not correctly soldered into the 4 prong connector that goes to the battery. These wires, and the connector are the ones inside the wooden stock battery compartment. They were cold soldered to the connector tabs and could lose connection even though it seemed to look alright.

Prior to the gun malfunctioning I had not even opened the battery compartment as it was only a week old. The wires that come off the GCU can also be badly soldered to the GCU. This is definitely a point of failure.

Since you don't see this problem when you physically move the board it definitely sounds like an electrical connection issue to me. I would closely check the wiring to the battery connector. These two black wires from the board have rubber coverings that can hide the loose connection. Carefully pull these back and check the soldering on BOTH ends. Intermittent connections can cause a myriad of problems similar to the ones you are experiencing. Don't be afraid of opening the covering of the GCU board to check connections.

Best of luck and hope your problem gets fixed.

Thank you very much for your comments and help, I really appreciate.

The issue wasn't a big deal and as I supposed it was a mecanical problem.

Since the Safari has the same security bloc as the Wolferine R, that I know how it woks, I tried to take it out from the breechblock but it won't... after several tries I arrived to remove it.

The issu was due to the safety pin spring (part 32 in the diagram), it that was bent and it doesn't allow the bolt safety pin (part 32) to move correctly up and down and that finally ended by being stucks in the breechblock.

To resolve the entire problem I changed the safety block and now every thing is perfect.

Again, thank you very much for you help.

(Excuse my english please)

P.S :

1/ the probleme began first when the safety began harsh after using it, especially when I move it to the left (safety on), so my friends becareful to a such detail.

You have to remove the bolt pivot screw , then reach in and pull out the tiny spring that is under the screw. Then, you have to pull DOWN on the switch activation pin in order for the block to slide out. The pin will only pull down with the safety switch in FIRE, I believe. I always have the trigger/board assembly off as well, but may be possible without having it off.

I'm having a similar problem with my Red Wolf Heritage...

It was leacking, so today I opened the gun and changed all orings...And this leack problem is solved.

Now, the problem is this, the gun needs to be locked and unlocked (the security), to shoot at every time.

Looks like the sidelever is always opened. For example: When I pull the trigger, same with the sidelever closed, it enter on programing mode. Another example: The gun does'nt wake up just opening the sidelever, wake up just when I lock and unlock the safety.

Where can I buy this "safety block" or a new gpu?

Thank's, and excuse my english.

Are you sure the microswitch is touching the strip? remove the plastic cover (opposite to screen side) and check the safety function.

Did you check the battery lead itself inside the trifgger unit?

I presume you didn't try to remove the safety block from the action?
Yup, you should be able to FEEL as well HEAR the micro switches CLICK.

I you don't the trigger adjustments may be incorrect & worst case a failed switch.
