RAW Rapid  HM1000x honeymoon

Thought I'd share my notes...

I'm in the honeymoon period with the .22 caliber HM1000x I got just before winter hit and we are just getting to know each other.

The HM1000x was too much gun to be shooting indoors so today's calm, 50 F weather had me at the shooting bench for the first time in 3 months. 😁

During the initial acceptance testing the PCP preformed well averaging 955 fps for 51.5 fpe with JSB Monster Redesigned pellets.

Ergonomically I found the grip to be too small for my hand, the stock too short and the trigger too light.

I swapped the grip for a larger commercial one which will do until I can make a custom one.

The spacer I made (picture attached) gives me a 13.5 to 15 inch adjustment range for the LOP.

The trigger settled in nicely. I suspect that grease on the trigger needed to be displaced (that's what it felt like was happening) because after a bit of use, the 1st stage smoothed out and the distinction between the 1st and 2nd stages became much clearer. The trigger was factory set at 3.5 ounces which I increased to 6.5 ounces.

I really think that RAW should consider shipping the HM1000x with the trigger set a bit heavier and let the customer adjust it down if they prefer. I'm used to the light triggers on my 10 meter target guns but not everyone can shoot a 3.5 ounce trigger safety.

I'm getting 36 shots from a 230 bar fill then the HM1000x falls off the regulator at 150 bar. I'm considering swapping the 480 cc bottle with the 700 cc bottle from my Panthera to increase the shot count a bit.

Hope this is of interest.
Cheers!

Happy Shooting!

Ridiculous!

I have been dialing in my M3 compact .22 for years. It’s always been good but never great. So about a month ago I went at it one more time to see if I could squeak that last bit out of it because it really is one of my favorite guns. I think I did. So tonight instead of one of my other proven long bombers for picking mice off a 130 yard feeder, I decided to see if this gun was capable of mouse accuracy at that distance at night. I set up and dialed exactly what Strelok said because I confirmed the data I entered was jiving with my gun last week.

This gun is not a night hunting gun often so I had to grab a Pard mount that I don’t use because the unit doesn’t click in very well. But I figured it would be good enough. It wasn’t as you will see in the first video. Two more videos to come to further explain this debacle. Age related or does this type of stuff just happen?

Learning to shoot in the wind.

I have been shooting for a very long time and shooting seriously since 2008. I was blessed with a 25 yard indoor shooting range year round and if I opened the big door a full 70 yards to my fence. There was a house on one side and garage on the other with mature trees. Even though I shot 100-300 pellets a day I never shot in the wind.
Now I live in Iowa. If I don’t go to the range because it’s to windy I will never go. So I have decided to embrace the wind and look forward to just tossing lead and learning what is going on. Reading it and hold over will be like a whole new thing. Then when the wind stops I can hit stuff again.

My gun / Scope and pellet stuff is all sorted out on both my PCP for Hunter class and my WFTF springer. So this should be a fun thing to do. Like learning a whole new skill. I’m really looking forward to it.

It's a BIG thing......really!

This post could be put in any number of forum related topics, including hunting, but i thought i would put it in the General catch all place because it really does apply to all airgun disciplines. Two months back I started a similar albeit less informed thread called "reading the wind".

In short - It's The Wind dummy.

For the last few years (and many many air rifles and scopes later) i have been doing my best to UP MY GAME; you know, become a better shooter.
So much of my time, and money was wasted on the "its the Arrow" (gun and or scope) argument Vice paying attention to me the Marksman.

In field target you get scored on a hit or a miss... so you never develop a true sense of (how much you missed) X or 0 that's it.
In Bench Rest, you get a numerical score that equates to a much more precise understanding of how well you hit or miss.
And if you want to keep records, you can begin to chart your improvement, or lack thereof.
In my case my field target score cards over a two year period (regardless of airgun scope combo) indicated i wasn't doing much better than 52%, regardless of my chosen gear.

For the last two months I have been laid up from left hand surgery. This forced me (out of boredom) to play with my lightest cheapest gun scope option, a Crosman HFT Challenger. It was resting on my bench and i was shooting strictly from indoor to out door from 10 yards to 80 yards and i was focused on <20 FPE pellet weight and speeds.
You would think i would be hitting much more KZ's from a bench as in better than the 52% stated above. NOT! This was so frustrating i didn't even bother trying to shoot offhand.

What gives?

Well, out of ignorance or pure stubborn willfulness i wasn't using and or applying all the tools and info i had at my disposal.
So i began to set out wind flags and strings and study the wind and watch how it affected my Point of Impact.
Then i started to apply the info from my Rose Chart and began to watch how using all of that info changed my POI compared to my it point of aim.
WOWZA!
Within just two sessions, with my least expensive rifle scope combo, my KZ scores jumped to 88%.
I was Still on the bench with a bum hand but something was definitely working.

As my hand continued healing i had several opportunities to shoot outside FT sessions; using a bucket and sticks (bipod) guess what.
Using this new to me wind game info my KZ hits remained at 80 plus %. Hey we are on to something.

So it doesn't matter if your shooting exploding golfballs, punching paper, knocking over field targets or trying to dispatch an animal in a humane manner... your time investment in learning how wind effects your shot is time well spent.
it's the WIND!

Saber Tactical FX King Chassis

The FX King Chassis by Saber Tactical: The Ultimate Competition Platform

At the core of this transformation is the FX King Chassis by Saber Tactical, a fully adjustable and modular system that enhances the rifle’s stability and performance. Designed for competition shooters who demand the highest level of precision, the chassis allows the FX King to be tuned specifically for PRS, NRL22, or benchrest disciplines.

One of the standout features of the chassis is its ability to accommodate all FX Dynamic Variant PCP air rifles, enabling shooters to utilize a variety of FX platforms while maintaining a consistent shooting setup. This interchangeability is a game-changer for those who want the flexibility to adapt their rifle to different shooting disciplines without having to invest in multiple chassis systems.

Fully Adjustable Buttstock and Ergonomic Fit

A critical aspect of any high-performance competition rifle is the adjustability of the stock. The FX King Chassis by Saber Tactical offers a fully adjustable buttstock, allowing shooters to fine-tune their rifle to their exact ergonomic preferences.

Key adjustments include:
  • Toolless Cheek Rest Adjustment: The cheek rest can be moved vertically to align perfectly with the shooter’s eye position, ensuring a consistent cheek weld for optimal sight picture and accuracy.
  • Buttpad Adjustment: The buttpad can be adjusted for both height and angle, accommodating different shooting styles and shoulder placements for maximum comfort.
  • Length of Pull Adjustment: This feature ensures that the shooter can achieve the ideal stance and trigger reach, critical for precision shooting.

These adjustments are all toolless, allowing for quick modifications in the field without the need for additional equipment. This level of customization is particularly beneficial for PRS-style competitions, where shooters must quickly adapt to various shooting positions and barricades.

M-LOK Slots for Weight Customization and Accessory Mounting

Weight distribution plays a crucial role in stabilizing a rifle for precision shooting, and the FX King Chassis is designed with extensive M-LOK slots on the front rail to maximize customization.
  • Benchrest Applications: Shooters can add substantial weight to the chassis to create a rock-solid shooting platform that minimizes recoil movement and improves shot consistency.
  • PRS and NRL22 Balance Optimization: In PRS-style shooting, excessive weight can be a hindrance, particularly when shooting from unstable positions or moving between barricades. The M-LOK system allows shooters to add just the right amount of weight to achieve perfect balance without compromising maneuverability.
  • Accessory Mounting: The M-LOK slots also enable the attachment of accessories such as bipods, rail-mounted bags, and foregrips, further enhancing the rifle’s adaptability to different shooting styles.
By giving shooters complete control over weight distribution and accessory placement, the FX King Chassis ensures that the rifle can be fine-tuned for any competition setting.

Extended Front Rail for 700cc Bottle and Ultimate Benchrest Stability

For those seeking the ultimate benchrest setup, Saber Tactical offers an additional extra-long front rail designed specifically to accommodate a 700cc bottle.
  • Increased Air Capacity: The ability to run a 700cc bottle significantly extends shot count, allowing for longer practice sessions and competition stages without the need to refill. This is particularly beneficial in extended shooting formats where consistency is key.
  • Extended Bipod Placement: The extra-long rail allows the bipod to be positioned farther forward, providing increased stability and reducing bipod hop. This extended footprint is crucial for precision shooting, as it minimizes movement and enhances shot repeatability.
For shooters focused on benchrest competitions, this additional rail transforms the FX King into one of the most stable platforms available, ensuring unparalleled accuracy and control.

Advanced Rail System for Maximum Versatility

The FX King Chassis features a highly versatile rail system that incorporates both Arca and Picatinny options.
  • Arca Rail Compatibility: The integrated Arca rail allows for seamless attachment of tripod mounts and other stability-enhancing accessories commonly used in PRS competitions.
  • Picatinny Rail: The Picatinny section ensures compatibility with a wide range of bipods, monopods, and other rifle accessories.
  • Enhanced Grip Texture: The chassis includes a jimping pattern underneath the rail, providing a secure grip when using shooting bags or resting the rifle on surfaces.
This multi-faceted rail system gives shooters the ability to customize their rig based on competition requirements, providing the flexibility needed for both dynamic and static shooting disciplines.

Conclusion: Elevating the FX Dynamic Variants the Next Level

The Saber Tactical conversion kit for the FX King Chassis is a groundbreaking upgrade that transforms the already impressive FX King into a truly elite competition air rifle. By allowing shooters to drop in any FX Dynamic Variant PCP air rifle, this chassis system provides unmatched versatility and performance.

With its fully adjustable buttstock, extensive M-LOK customization options, extended front rail for a 700cc bottle, and advanced rail system, the FX King Chassis is designed for serious competitors who demand the highest level of precision and control. Whether setting up for PRS, NRL22, or benchrest disciplines, this chassis ensures that the FX King can be tailored to excel in any competitive shooting environment.

FFP or SFP Thinking about a change

Every scope I own is SFP... I only shoot usually a known distance (~ 35 yds) and will do a hold over for longer distances. I only shoot invasive birds doing crop damage. Seems as though so many guys use FFP's on the YT videos I enjoy... I am thinking about trying a FFP but after all these years why change?

Air Venturi  What might this mean - if anything?

I had my Avenge X 25 out today for some testing at 50 yards. That turned out to be one of those some good; some bad stories.

When I got back home, I filled the gun up and hooked up the chrony. I was using my Apolo cheap 25 grain pellets. I wanted to see just how the regulator was performing over a full shot string. Here is what that looked like.
FPS v Reg P.jpg

Number one is that the regulator seems, to me, to not be doing a very good job of regulating. Granted, the taper off is kind of small but I'd expect to see a much straighter line up to the fall off point. But that isn't the interesting thing. Look at the velocity staying relatively constant while the regulator pressure is dropping. So I then plotted the FPS/Reg P and got this.
FPS over Reg P.jpg

This is showing graphically that I'm getting more velocity at lower reg pressures. I'm wondering what this means. It looks to me like if I back the hammer spring off a bit, that the tilt in this graph may be turned into a straighter line. It almost looks like at the higher pressures I'm hitting valve lock with the current hammer spring setting and as the pressure drops, the valve lock eases up so I get the same kind of velocity. Isn't that what an unregulated gun does? That stupid low SD on this data is telling me that there is an extremely strong interplay here between the pressure and the speed. Any data that plots a line like this with relatively equal excursions at the front and back end with a fairly straight connection between the two will give a very low SD.

Is there anything in this that would point to whether or not a system is in a nice state of balance in terms of pressure and valve operation? Any opinions on the performance of the regulator? I should also mention that 2 days ago with the same pellet and the same reg set point, the speed was averaging 905 FPS and I had a smaller SD on the velocity that I see here. Why this would change is unknown to me. If this sounds like the ramblings of a confused man, it should, I am a confused man at this point.

Tony

More general questions

There's questions about, how many of this, or that (sights, shooting sticks, mufflers, etc.) , do you own.

Here's a question -
I like to experiment. Saying that a given item is the "best"...is a useless comment unless you actually have more than a couple, of that item to test that thought with. This is the ONLY way to see what is the "best", for you, of that given item.
So, that said, yeah, I have a "few" more sights than guns. Dot sights, holographic sights, prism sights, and even a few scopes. Trying to learn the intricacies of each brand and design.

SO...the question - How many of you have more sights than guns ?
Or had before you sold some.

Mike

  • Question
N/A  Does velocity effect rifle sensitivity when shooting?

Will shooting lower velocities help a gun be "more accurate"? The boys over in the uk seem to be pretty accurate at sub 12ft.. That makes me wonder will the over all function/recoil/movement through out the shot cycle help the gun (pcp) be more repeatable/forgiving etc.? im not talking pellet stability in flight on talking before the pellet leaves the barrel and just before the sear on the trigger breaks.. Im thinking of tuning my gun down to 700-750 fps.. What would the benefits other than shot count be for shooting that low? any info helps
