Okay so i tested my sawed off FX maverick today ( 700 to 600 mm )
And i will have to admit so far not a success, clearly i have a issue as groups are erratic, with a few really bad " fliers "

SO as i am not the surrendering kind, i have restored both barrels to a clean end, and i am now ready to proceed with trying ghetto crowning once again, and this time i will try others solutions VS the one i came up with myself.

Not able to blame my groups on the weather, it was excellent range weather.

Still think it is a crown issue VS saying that a FX barrel with no choke are not at all able to shoot, i am quite sure it should at least be able to shoot better than what i saw today, i just have to do a better job.

PS: i have looked at prices for a 600 mm Heavy barrel, but i would prefer to save those money for other things.

PPS. when not throwing erratics the STD FX liner was able to put dents / holes in a Metal plate 134 yards away and within acceptable distance of aim ( 2 " ), but it for sure was a POI chase.
Peashooter
I cut both a standard barrel and a heavy barrel, the standard one was not too bad, but clearly not quite there either, the Heavy barrel was a mess and i only tried it like 10 shots a while back.
My Maverick are originally 600 mm, but as it came with a horrible barrel i changed to 700 mm when that became possible, and then the rifle worked just fine.

Cut off choke to maybe make the Maverick able to shoot heavier .177 slugs, CUZ as is i can only get 13 grain to fly well and 16 not bad but still not something i would shoot daily.
Cutting breech end would be a big mistake, not least as i do not have access to a lathe CUZ then i would not have this issue i think.
All out experiment here, i am also way past the FX rifle, but still like to play around, in the end i might have to buy a new Heavy barrel, and then donate the rifle to someone, probably my nephew.
Firewalker
Yupper, you cut the wrong end off.
Peashooter
well i new lead in i am not able to do without a lathe,,,,, and me figuring out how something like that should look in a airrifle.
I have seen in rifles you can get a reamer for various ammo, but not sure you get that for airguns, and even so probably too expensive.

Just wanted to see if loosing the choke would make changes CUZ the CZUB barrel on my Two ( no choke ) can / will shoot 16 grain slugs just fine, with pretty much same twist rate as FX barrels in .177 ( 1:17.7 )
Also some i have seen shoot FX Heavy barrels and 16 grain just fine, but i have tried like +1000 16 grain rounds in my not modified 700 mm Maverick and not been able to make that work.

Mind you, i am not lucky with barrels, Maverick was bummer in original 600 mm, and the first barrel on my Two the 700 MM LW barrel, had a massive choke in the middle 30 % of a barrel that was supposed to have 0 Choke.
Feeling frisky, so i think tomorrow i will bring the Maverick to the range and do some more testing in its sawed off state ( 700 mm to 600 mm )
Also need to redo the business end of the Heavy barrel, though crowning it will have to wait until i get home.

Not bringing any of the really heavy stuff, i think i will test with 13 grain i know very well performance of in 700 mm form, but i do also have some 16 grain in the ammo box if i like what i see.

Post up your days impressions… Why do you have to crown the Maverick?
Peashooter
I crowned the FX barrels like i have seen SUB 12 airgunners do his,,,,, on a lathe mind you.
I did it with a drill and a handheld dremel on my living room table

Today after grinding a mm off the end of both barrels i did try the STD barrel again, but without even e ghetto crown it was even worse / bordering dangerous CUZ CTC spread on 10 shots on the container at 55 M had a spread of like 300 - 500 mm
At least with my ghetto crowning on the STD barrel it was only 200 mm at worst, and only like 2-3 out of 10 shots, others would group fairly nice.

Shot string also fine of course.

Peashooters pruning service hard at work.

The branch i started working on Saturday have now fallen.

The fallen was swiftly propped up, so additional pruning can be done.

Sorry for your loss. They kinda become .............I don't know how to explain it. I think , Anatole France, described it best.

Not sure if this will work, but here goes.

For the last few years a group of us have been holding monthly funshoots.
Not everyone is on all the various forums, FB, or other sites, so I am posting the main link to our little gathering here for this forum.

The current dates are posted at the end of the thread.
Everyone is invited and those who wish to attend may either make contact through that thread or message me here.

Airguns are a learning curve..lol I have been getting terrible accuracy with my Chazsel .222 12 twist barrel.. Long story short i got another one... And half 45 grain .222 hitting sideways at 10 yards..Anything heavier 55 grain every slug side ways... I guess you need 7-9 twist..
Wow, sometimes you just gotta sit back and tell yourself things will get better.

Thursday night my two work buddies and I went to the local lake to chase catfish and drift around on the pontoon. This was going to be the last trip of the summer (my first trip, for reasons...) It rained buckets on us, it threw lightning at the hills, the wind blew us around despite 2 anchors rigged. We decided to cut our losses and go home about midnight. At the dock, I dropped my phone into the lake.

Ploop!:poop:☠️. Nothing to be done but go home and get the 250# magnet and try to get lucky. 2 more hours of rain, wind and cussing made no difference. Phone has gone to the Great Motorola in the sky.

The insured cost to replace it was a $100.00 deductible. The Vendor overnight shipped and arrived today. It's pulling down my contacts and text messages from the cloud. Still not happy about it, but it is getting better.

I don't really like fish all that much - I will stick to squirrel and rabbits. And that is why i have the ATV and Jeepy instead of a 🤬🤬 boat.

@JimNM That sounds like a rough day. Good to read that you made it through and all was not lost.

A little perspective was called for, and I realized that I was going to survive that trial. Really, it helped me get a handle on some other issues that were causing more grief than was warranted. God does not grant patience; he sends tests that allow us to grow our own patience.
Church got hit by lightning.

Note the build year on it, 1123, and that's not even the oldest church here, in use too i believe.
I do wonder why they have not made the two 1 numbers alike, but trust me its not 1723

BTW if you drive a little further down the road with the google car, you will see houses with a little 5 X 4" or there about light grey box on the wall, that is the fiber optic internet, so this little POS village / town are hooked up for lightning fast internet.
Mind you 1 gbit are still the norm, but some places do also offer 2.5 gbit, and a select few places also 5 gigabit, that mean you can amass a serious pic collection in no time,,,,, if ! you are that way inclined.
1 gbit on fiber = 15 USD/mo
Aside for ghetto fixing a snowpeak today.
I also managed to pull quite a few old obsolete wires from my car, shuffle around 1 piggy back fuse adapter for my hard wire setup, so i can draw more power when charging.
Remove a lot of power sockets in my glove box, and replacing them with a power source instead, so one of my cameras do not have to leech on the little battery in my little car while parked.
Not a huge power pack, none of them really are as is, but as i only use parking guard for 4 hours on timer it is just fine, the rest is up to permanent CCTV equipment.

Seven bundles of mixed hardwood is laid up under the lean-to, 14,000lbs so far. Another 7 bundles go into the wood shed. Feeling healthy and pain free! Good fall so far.
Ezana4CE
@Firewalker How are you splitting and bundling such long pieces of wood? What sort of equipment do you use to stack the bundles up?
Firewalker
I get the bundles from a sawyer as is, I use my tractor with forks to lift and carry them to my processing spot in front of the storage areas. I cut the bundles down to 20" lengths while on the tractor and stack the wood like normal firewood.

This is how they are delivered to me.

Did one of my plate capture videos today.
The 70mai A810 do just fine capturing front plates on oncoming cars at highway speeds.

I miss having a lathe at my place..Long story short I think im going to buy another used metal lathe..My friend loves my Jet13x40 and he does too much beautiful custom work it. Looking on marketplace I saw some nice lathes for sale. The 13x40 jet is great for light work but not heavy turning. So ill get at least a 13x40 or maybe bigger...I,ve only run chinese lathe's..Maybe find a nice old american lathe. I miss doing barrels on the late nights when sleep isn't a option.. I just got a Teslong digital borescope and wow is it good. Much better than my old Hawkeye borescope..Getting my old interest going again.. Thanks for your support

I like the Teslong as well. Good scope for the price point.
And next in the hit parade... A Cox Bushmaster from 1975. The motor is locked up and it needs a new rudder. I have a few spare engines but I doubt I'll ever run it. It's way too noisy. I had a bunch of different ones. Good times while getting hearing damage...

I have a runable Testors P40 as well. Gotta find the right kid to give them to (along with some earplugs).

P8240036.JPG
Treefrog
That's very interesting. I wouldn't have though of using an RC boat to move bait, but if it works... 120 klicks is fast! I remember an old Testors .049 P-51 that I had. I did the radius math, counted revolutions and timed it. It was going a whopping 34-mph. I was so disappointed...

The battery powered stuff just doesn't do it for me. The lady gave me a drone for a birthday and I flew it one time. Now it sits here. Trying to figure a way of getting rid of it without her noticing. For some reason engines appeal more than motors do. Kind of like pumpers over springers or PCPs.
Peashooter
Well i must of course admit that a little 3.5 cc motor, revving to 40K RPM and putting out several ponies,,,,, that is indeed impressive, the whine is also good.

My friends old 5B with the Dominator exhaust,,,, also very loud

His T model, not so loud but have caught a lot of air, and almost ripped off my head as cameraman.

WoodWelder
I almost forgot about those planes. I had one that was held by strings so it wouldn't get away. All it did was go around in circles and wait till it run out of fuel then had to spin in circles so as to not crash land it. Remote controls to purchase in those years were insanely expensive.
Yeah, the noise and smell of the COX fuel was almost unbearable. :ROFLMAO:
It, too, lives! It's a Wilesco D5. It does need a gasket or two. The knocking you hear is the base rattling on the grill. It's slightly bent. Now to figure out the horsepower.

Ezana4CE
What is that?
Treefrog
It's a working model steam engine. I got it as a kid and just found it again. It's running on burning candle wax in the video.
A little more searching turned up the original. From Christmas of '73, I think. Still in the box with the instructions. It's a little rough and was seized up, but a little oil freed up the fly wheel. Decades spent in a damp basement have taken their toll. It runs at a much higher rpm than the other one, iirc. It will be fun to find out exactly how fast it goes.

P8240034.JPG
P8240032.JPG
It lives! I was able to line the fuel-tray with foil and use some candle wax with a paper-towel wick to add heat. The rpms are a bit lower than I remember, but I guess the governor has something to do with that. The cats don't care for it and the dogs don't know what to think.

ThomasT
Hello @Treefrog , that is great! Real steam engines are designed to run slow and produce a ton of power. I use to design and build small stationary steam engines and the goal was to make one that would run super slow.

ThomasT
Treefrog
That's interesting, Thomas. The Wilesco model website says around 1500 rpm for some models, but this one was running at around 600. I think it's because I was using candle wax as fuel instead of the fuel tabs that they sell. Sterno was the go-to fuel when I was a kid. I think wax burns at a lower temp. You can find more of these at https://www.wilesco.de/en/
I ran across this at my folks' house yesterday. It's been a lot of years since it's been run. I used to love those things. Thinking I'll clean it up and get it going. Now where did I put that erector set?

P8210018.JPG
Motorhead
I had one of those as a young man. Would run it on a scoop of STERNO fuel placed in the burn tray. Pretty clean for 50 +/- years old (y)
Peashooter
It is not Union Pacific Big Boy,,,,, but steam is pretty cool.
As i recall from smoke diver course water expand 900 X when it turn to steam.

Needless to say all of my G-scale trains are steam models.
Treefrog
Thanks, guys. Not long after I got it (in '73), I picked up my first pellet gun. After that, all my Sterno money went for pellets and co2. I never did really power much with it. A waxed-cardboard paddle-wheel boat for a Robert Fulton steamboat demonstration for school. It got me an A.
Its that time of year again! 48,000 pounds of mixed hardwood destined for the wood boiler, needs to get cut to 22" pieces and hauled to the woodshed and lean-to.

First time ever, the boys are coming up to make a "wood day" happen!! 20 long cords of wood in one day!!

Damn!! Looks like a lot of work. But on the other hand, I have a hot water lines running through my house, but my 80 gallon water heater is fired from propane. Gets expensive. Thanks for posting!
Firewalker
Propane would cost me $500 a month to heat all three spaces, the wood is under $2k for the year.
Firewalker
-40°F ain't no joke.
Seem like i have caught a new addiction.
Shooting pellets.

It never really worked well in my Maverick, well at least at the 86 M distance i shot at back then.
But my past 10 or so hours of shooting at the range have been mainly pellets, and shooting them from 30 M to 123 M ( +130 yards )
With the wind that was there, well a measly little 10.4 or so grain or so .177 pellet get pushed around a lot, so in regard to working the wind a learning experience for sure.
At 93 M / 100 yards, with a rifle zeroed for the occasional 0 wind / very little wind, well if i was quick about it i could put 3 pellets on a 2" target before the wind was back.
With the wind there, well you got blown L / R about 1 - 5 inches when it was bad, and some times you also got blow down on the paper, very few high shots for natural reasons.

So the crossman domed pellets, well 1000 of them gone, and they work really well at the shorter ranges,
The JSB Heavy ones, well lagged a bit behind the crosman pellets, but it might be a speed issue i have NOT touched my regulator in 2 outings now, and my last 10 hours of shooting, unusual i have not had a chrono dangling off my rifle.

But the kicker pellet, the JTS dead centers,,,,, i got to get me some more of those CUZ at 100 yards, distinctive better than the other pellets i tried.

Also on a whim i brought the 10 grain JSB KO / MK 3 slugs,,,,, and daum, in not insignificant wind i was putting slugs on a thin wooden pole at 130 yards,,,,, and many in a row very few misses due to wind.
So i only had 1 tin of those,,,,,, THAT ! will soon change .

My friend shooting his .22 Cutlass, with the 15.something grain JSB pellets, well lets just say he is now a long range shooter too, though due to his old scope he can not hang at 130 yards, but 100 he do just fine with the old rifle.

Here is my first paper of yesterday shot at 100 yards, with the JTS pellets.
Bit of Chaos here, later i got to judge wind better, as in hold my shots to there was less of it, or the 3 wind flags was at least showing mostly the same direction, CUZ in 100 yards the wind was often 3 different directions.

100ypellets.png

Today i did short range stuff, pruning leaves and twigs of a tree, or shoot 1 hole groups in paper at 30 M
Both fairly easy due to surprising little wind early in the day.

At 53 BAR on the regulator, my long rifle was sipping air, i could get used to shooting like that ( around 930 fps )

Will be adding a video later on.
Peashooter
A little video from yesterday.

L.Leon
Why not simply send those same pellets at shorter, more practical ranges? What are you learning from shooting at such a distance? Maybe that its futile to get into air guns for long range precision?
