Make some wind flags

The signal update between the windmeter to Strelok on the tablet/android feels like instant or for sure shorter then 1 sec. Both the reticle view also the direction view.
This speed is acceptable but must slow down the spin on the wind blade - you can see I put lead shots in the head ball.
A huge difference how the air moves and changes direction much faster in my relatively closed space backyard where I was testing these projects only - or my shooting range where is wider open room a wind is more consistent direction.
If the blade "nose" is very light the motion is very sensitive. Need to balance the head weight also the tail-tape length.

For the gun range I use this Samsung 8" tablet for all my outdoors needs: both the FX radar and Labradar / Strelok Pro / WindMeter / Xreload / all my data logging....
The larger screen have different layout for these apps and I like it much better.
I have a second StrelokPro license for my cellphone, using it for printing NFC dope cards only. This how I know the GUI between the two.
Love it. Have my 10 guns programmed into Strelok pro. Fantastic research on wind. Great work.

FX  FX Redback Standard vs the Gogun Redback carbine 8-shot airbows

We've seen posts on various models of airbows over the years. They seem to take two separate paths of development.

There are specialty arrows like the Air Venturi Air bolts designed for use in air rifles of different calibers .357 to .50 cal. with barrels over 21". The main selling point there is the obvious convenience of using a regular large bore airgun that can also shoot arrows, current price ~$20US each.

Then there are the high-power Airbows that are designed and marketed primarily for hunting. And they keep on coming. I just noticed that Airforce is offering a new arrow shooter called a Talonbolt ~145fpe max. The Umarex AirSaber airbows ~165fpe max aren't very expensive and not very difficult to learn to use either. That would be substantial power for an airgun hunting slug at modest ranges, but it is truly exceptional power for an arrow.

This old FPE hunting chart below from Easton Archery is interesting. There are many pellet/slug airguns available today with shot power >65fpe, but I wouldn't want to hunt anything really large and dangerous with even a 75fpe airgun. This chart assumes broadhead razor tip arrows. An arrow with a target point might still go all the way through and out the other side but the hole would be too small to bleed enough.

Arrow power needed (at the point of impact) for -->
<25 ....... Small game.
25-41 .. Medium game, deer, antelope.
42-65 .. Large game, elk, black bear, boar.
>65 ..... Toughest game, cape buffalo, grizzle bears.

So modern airbows seem to offer a lot more shot power than is needed for hunting. Even the short and lightweight Umarex AirJavelin (CO2 and AirJavelin Pro (PCP) arrow carbines produced over 30fpe and could easily robinhood arrows from a rest at 20 yards.

All of this crossed my mind recently when I noticed that there are two different versions of the FX Redback 8-shot repeating gatling style airbow for sale. It reminds me of a similar development in the breakbarrel airgun market when Gamo finally began to offer multishot magazines in some of their models. Finally, after over 100 years. I can only think of one model of 1 crossbow and 1 model of airbow which have a double shot capacity. A sudden advance to an adjustable power, 8-shot repeating airbow from a major vendor is a major technical advance in an admittedly small segment of the market.

The large commercial vendors offer it as the FX Redback Standard, specs 41.5" long, 7lb 6oz, max ~145fpe using 375 grain 23" Air Venturi Air bolts. The price is ~$1,730 and air bolts are extra at ~$20 each.

The Gogun site has their own branded variation of the FX Redback. It appears to be a Standard Redback with 12 inches taken off of the barrels (31.5" long) to make it into a carbine at $1,550, or $180 less than the Standard model. And add a 10-pack of 12" vaneless arrows at $90 per pack (~$9/arrow).

So the Gogun version is a foot shorter than the Standard, weighs about 9 ounces less, with max power ~80fpe using plain 12" hollow carbon fiber arrows weighing about 250 grains. And it costs (without arrows) ~$180 less than the Standard model.

Both of the FX Redback versions cost over 3x the price of a new 2-shot Umarex Airsaber Elite X2, which is the only other multi-shot airbow I'm aware of.

I've had so much enjoyment watching Jörg Sprave's Slingshot Channel on YouTube and his early development of the Redback prototype that I like to support his shop when I can. This time around Gogun appears to be the only one offering a compact version of a truly unique commercial FX product.

There aren't many reviews of the Redbacks yet and I'm curious about any recent experiences that other people may have had with them. Gogun only had one Redback in stock this morning ... and before I had finished my coffee, there were none.

Other  Revisiting an old friend

A few months ago I couldn’t resist the urge knowing how good these rifles are. I ended up with a second this time in .22. It is tuned to shoot 18.1 JSB’s @860. I just swap the cylinder from one to the other for the higher shot count. They were both bought here. At used prices for the Canadians reading this that aren’t aware of the forum store. https://www.airgunforum.ca/store/index.php?cPath=22

Huben  Can anything outslug the Huben K1?

Thank you for sharing, it was really helpful
I am still torn between .22 and .25 which one would you recommend from your experience? What are the main pros/cons you noticed?
Cons on the .22 is that your mag chamber can vary in size from .220-.224, not the individual chambers but the mag as a whole. There is much less variance with the .25, there's also less selection of slugs in .25 (con)

For me, I prefer the .22 caliber all together, but for the K1 platform if you are looking for power to take down larger game. I would go .25 as the NSA are harder slugs. If you want ammo that can be accurate and still expand go for the .22. You can still get power out of it but it taps out around 80fpe

Took A Coyote That Was Threatening My Dog

Over the past few years a family of coyotes has become resident in my very suburban neighborhood. Over the same time my sightings of raccoons, possum and skunks has decreased. Suprisingly, the number of cats is still high, but then again, neighbors are always fostering strays. At least the coyotes can't climb over or slip under the fences like the others can. Yes, a pest in one place might be a benefit in another.
But we lost a cat early this one winter morning, a coyote breakfast. She was a good cat, but brought up as an indoor housecat, not prepared for the dangers of the wild. And my dog is getting too old to go off leash, a slow moving snack. The neighbor with the "pick up after your dog" sign might argue that coyotes are a good thing as I now pick up more often, sometimes even the coyote scat left boldly right in the middle of wherever. I still see deer and turkeys, so maybe we don't have too many coyotes, yet?

Coyotes can easily jump or climb fences that are six feet high, and they are remarkable hunters. I witnessed a pair of coyotes working together to capture a feral cat on a hillside. They were barking at each other; as one chased the cat, the other was waiting up the hill. Ultimately, the second coyote killed the cat with a crushing bite to its neck. I have a female coyote that often roams behind my fence line and barn, searching for rats, mice, and gophers. Additionally, a Red-shouldered hawk likes to roost on my back fence, scanning my property and my neighbor's for vermin.

FX Impact m4 Barrel kit

It is a standard 600mm 22cal with a slug liner now. I have a pellet liner thats the same lenght I would like to put together as a kit for now.

Future I will possibly want to change it to a 25cal slugger 600mm and or a 500mm 22cal pellet setup.
If you want the changeover to be quick on 22 to 25 I think you need the barrel adapter and it may be easier to do a kit. As for staying 22 it's super ez (as you probably know) to just pop out the liner and swap it. Up until you go 500 mm and have to buy skinny moderators to clear your bottle or buy a smaller bottle potentially.

I toyed with the ideas of all these options and just tuned my 700mm 22 for heavy slugs and bought a dreamline compact in 25 to cover my bases.

FX Impact Soft Case

I have something very similar to this. I think mine is made by Gettysburg but it’s basically the same as this one on Amazon. Has always worked fine for me and I like the soft case for ease of transport over a hardcase in many situations. I am not beating my equipment around in transit so it’s more than adequate.

USPS at its finest

A quick search shows major issues with them all......I'm with KWK about not having the time to sit and watch the tracking, I wait for the email that says "delivered" then I go pick it up.
Truth is, waiting for stuff sucks but be thankful we're not 60 years ago waiting for stuff. LOL

I SEE THE ADVANAGE TO HAVING ONLY ONR GUN. O ring question...

I have often thought of posting an oring “want to trade” thread in the classified. I have bought most of the orings for my guns through either the Oring Store or Orings and More Store where they typically have a minimum order of 25 to 100 orings per size - enough to last about 5 lifetimes and plenty to trade for a few I still need.

.308 1/12 Twist bull barrel for a Texan

I am building a custom .308 texan and the only barrel I can get is a 1/12 twist 32 inch length. Can someone please advise me if this twist is to fast for 120-150gn slugs. Also running AAO 4500psi setup.
The factory 308 barrel will be enough for 145gr to 155gr long bullet that one is 1-14 .. for bullet in the 120gr+ Doug said that 1-18 to 1-20 would be better suited for light bullets.. remember to use one last solid aluminum bushing in the end of you frame .

Diana  Diana 52 .177 pellet size?

Pellet fit and weight are two different things. Or, let's ask first what do you mean by fit? It usually denotes how well the pellets chamber, ie. are they easy to load or need a heavy push or two, or do they drop in without any resistance or go snugly and smoothly? A light pellet can be hard to load and vice versa.

10+ grain pellets are the default in a .177 cal D52, since lighter pellets usually fly just too fast. Within that bracket there's a range of fits. JSB Exacts usually fit the loosest, and would be one to try in a tight chamber gun. Exact Heavies are 10.34 gr. in weight.

I wouldn't shoot Crosmans out of any of my guns. With their high antimony content, they mess up the leading if you intend to shoot any other brand pellets (especially soft ones like the JSB's). The Crosmans are also low-quality, having wildly varying head diameters per tin.
Well I've had good experience with the Piranha pellets in my Crosman rifles. Pretty much why I tried them in the Diana 52 Magnum Springer. The heads were too large and pretty much had to force them in. I could tell by the chrony results they actually effected the velocity with the Diana rifle, but not the Crosman rifles. Since the Diana is just slightly stronger then the Crosman rifles, but the Crosman rifles had like 50 or more fps with the Piranha pellets. It's just not the pellet for this Diana. I have some Barracuda Match 10.65g I'll try. See if they fit any better. Otherwise I'll try some jsb's.

Events  Disappointed having had to cancel an N50 match

Sadly, we had to cancel our first N50 match of our outdoor season, at the Meeker Sportsman Club, in Marion, OH. We have had a LOT of rain all week. I drove to the club this morning at 8:30 and this is what I found.

View attachment 553268View attachment 553267

The long lane, going back to our range, had disappeared under 10” of water. We just couldn’t risk anyone going off the stone and getting stuck in the soft grass.

This is the first match we have ever had to cancel. Many of us had very high hopes of shooting today but the weather had other plans. Our next match is 4/29 and hopefully this is the last and only match cancellation.
You made the right choice. The only real choice. It sucks, the weather Really hasn't been playing ball much thus far into '25. Best of luck next time man.
