N/A  Damage from slug energy

I agree with JaceSpace's post but want to make some points. First, the term "energy dump" is, in my opinion, nonsense. In movies we see people flying through the air after being hit from a shotgun, for instance. That sort of thing does not happen from shoulder fired weapons. If it did, the shooter would fly through the air too! We see images of wound channels in ballistic gel and think that is what our airguns do. It is not. Rounds well under 1000 fps do not move animal tissue fast enough to permanently damage it except in the direct path of the projectile. The tissue off to the sides expands and then moves back essentially undamaged. Much higher velocity rifles do expand animal tissue fast enough to damage it but not most pistols and essentially all air rifles.

What expansion of air rifle projectiles does is create a wider and not as deep hole through the animal. JaceSpace correctly points out that small animals like squirrels do not require a lot of penetration to reach vital organs. A solid projectile is likely to exit from guns 25fpe (approximately) or higher. A wider hole will do more damage and tend to lead to a faster death for the animal just like use of a larger caliber would. So for something like my near 40 fpe Caiman X in 22 caliber, I have no issue with H&N slugs that expand because they still penetrate far enough in wet paper that I know they will get to the squirrels vitals and may even exit. I think it's a good idea to test expanding projectiles to understand how much penetration you will get but the basic idea that a wider wound channel is preferable to an exiting pellet is a totally valid point.

I will also add, however, that I've killed over 20 squirrels with a non-expanding domed pellet from my 177. I only lost one and it was totally my fault, I shot it in the rear end and it crawled off where I couldn't find it after it fell. So I have over 20 clean kills with a non-expanding 177. The squirrels drop a little quicker with a 22 or 25 but expansion is not really necessary in my opinion for squirrels. It's OK to have it but the squirrel will drop very quickly as long as you place the projectile properly. Non-expanding 22s and 25s drop squirrels at impact most of the time and no reasonably placed projectile will let them travel more than a few feet.
Very well said!

Exploding ammo

was just going to post this.

These are great and a good fun with kids. Take them out to some longer ranges and you will instantly know when you make a solid hit.
picked some of those up at an odd lot discount store Wednesday for a buck. Think I will save them for the 4th of July, will blend right in and not expose me to the scrutiny of neighbors.

Muzzle Turbulence PB Applied to PCP?

I agree that you haven't seen much difference in your FT gun, but don't forget, it's a .177 right and 20 fpe right? What I've seen is on .30 calibers pushing 100 fpe. There's a lot of energy to dissipate there.
Not an engineer but because of the small volume of a .177 bore wouldn’t 20ftlb still effect the pellet leaving the barrel similarly?

N/A  Does velocity effect rifle sensitivity when shooting?

Motorhead explained it well. What others say is also true. This whole subject is fascinating; when I think of which is a better way to achieve what you are trying to achieve,do not leave yourself out of the picture. Also, are you able to hold the rifle? Yes, there are certain FPS that pellets, ammo, rifles, etc. like.
It is not just air rifles; most things have a "sweet spot."Is it a "Gasalt thing"I think it is, The whole is greater than the sum of the parts. As you see, an easy answer can be complicated. :ROFLMAO:

Tuxing Twin All varieties

Yea I hear you, I have three compressors as well. As I got into filling tanks i bought a yong heng because my small air cooled would not cut it, then the yong got weak after 6 months. Bought the twin tuxing and I put a new piston in the yong as a back up. I run a bunch of ice in the bucket when I'm filling tanks from zero. It definitely helps you start with much colder water. My computer fans probably only drop it a few degrees at best? I have no idea. I also keep a few fans blowing on the cylinder heads. Anything to make it run a little cooler is going to prolong the life. My power switch is the only thing that broke on the tuxing, luckily it's stuck in the on position and I run an inline external rocker switch.

What do you use as a stage timer.

I have a wife that will yell at me in 2 minutes, either her or my son will yell at me. Really cheap as they both only need some munchies and a liquid to keep them happy :D
Exactly. I just have to keep my phone on, and if my wife senses that I'm having fun for more than 90 seconds, she'll shoot me a text to pick up something from the store or do yard work.

Air gun hunting

Biased of course, but Idaho. All nongame, small game and big game are legal to pursue with an air gun. There are minimum caliber restrictions for turkey and all big game but they make sense, not some bureaucratic guess at what sounds good. Plus a large variety of game to choose from.

Air Venturi  What might this mean - if anything?

Also, the graph at the beginning of the thread was using the same reg set point and the same hammer spring adjustment as the first test today at a 250 bar fill pressure. At 300 bar fill, I was seeing 940 FPS. At the 250 bar setting, the average was 895. Where did the extra. 45 FPS go? Overall the reg pressures were pretty much the same over both strings.

First Time with Slugs

:D:D we have a new guy at work. While out to lunch the other day ( I was driving ) we decided to troll some of the dairy farm permissions that I have and at one of them a starling showed up on a wire at the wrong time. (40'ish yards - I didn't even range it - I just knew it was w/in my zero range ) I lined it up and "THWACK!". A .22 RTI Prophet Performance (v1) flinging 25g H&N slugs. My co-worker was like "Damn! That bird exploded! The pop on it was louder than the actual shot . . . "

I just looked at him w/a big smile - " . . . ain't that the coolest thing ever? " :)
hearing that pop never gets old lol

Airforce  AirForce Talon valve won't seat in Huben Max-ATH Universal Regulator

The vendor sent me a replacement thinking that the first one might have just been a single dud, but the 2nd one has the same problem. He contacted Huben and they're going to make a one-off regulator with a recess for me to confirm that that solves the problem. I'll give you all follow up when I know more. There is a time lag, but so far it's confirming that Huben is responsive to customer input as mentioned by Air Shootist on Youtube.

This is a #36 wire drill (.106" dia.) that just fits in the gap that won't close on the 2nd regulator.

I mocked it up in my Talon anyway. The length of pull went from around 14" to 18". Shooting offhand will require supporting it from the base of the trigger grip rather than the fore end. If Huben's U regulators weren't so expensive I would have preferred that to keep the length manageable.

You could go with the shorter fatter bottles.
Alsafe has a 0.6L 75mm diameter and only 235mm long, around 8.5". Bit pricy on AliExpress, you can buy 2 on Alibaba for the same price.

I have Acecare 1.1L on mine, same 235mm length but 110mm diameter. There are angled connectors to tip the bottle down. Or use the Cricket Dream Universal drop block to drop it 50mm.

End of the bottle works as a buttstock. However, I'm having custom buttstock made by Jake at jb3dpd.com.

.22 Talon with Dream valve. The 25CC plenum is okay, the 50cc in the MAX-ATH is better.
