Tuning Crosman Shockwave .22 Progress Thread

Howdy all!

I’m going to multi post some post from another forum I originally began this subject on. I just found this forum and figured that I would post along here as well.

Hope that I can make something of this off the rack Wally World special! I will keep this thread current with my findings, musings, and modifications.

I’ve had this off the shelf (read inexpensive) pellet rifle for almost two years now…it’s a Wally World special Crosman Shockwave .22 that I have spent little time with. The “two stage” trigger is laughable but the real thorn in the side was the lack of usable irons and a plastic scope that flat out didn’t work. I took advantage of a Black Friday deal and have a Vortex Vanquish 3-9 and some rings coming for under $100! Usually the scope alone is a $200 item. For pellet rifle purposes, this will cover the bill.

I truly don’t think there is hope for the trigger more then learning it. My recollection…long semi un-predictable mush through a stiff first stage. No discernible push through the wall for that first stage other than a squishy pressure that you can sometimes miss entirely and break a shot a smidge too soon. Oh well. I need something to do in the backyard as it gets cooler and my activities get closer to home.

I was on the job site yesterday, framers are finished and off site. Noticed scrap wood about and began formulating.

Decided I needed a pellet trap, don’t want to be plinking against my nice live oaks, and I live in a suburban area. People are surrounding me….drives me nuts! Anyway, I drew up a simple plan and came up with the amount of lumber I’d need.

Have some stall mat (think horses) and cut out a 17x15.5” piece. It’s 1/2” thick and haaaard wearing. It’s harder than a mud flap, and is “polished” in finish which provides a super hard surface. If I needed more layers, ain’t no prob…have plenty more stall mat I can slice from.

I know I have some small hooks in my “stash” somewhere…I’m going to screw them into the top strap to hang paper targets from. They’re a small enough gauge that they should make a nice, neat hole in the paper.

The bearings should arrive today and I’ll do the quick trigger job on it. Scope and rings say they’ll be here tomorrow. I’m definitely thinking I’ll remove the rear sight (garbage). The thought of grinding off the front site then polishing the scuffs has come to mind as well…

I did go ahead and remove the front sight and rear, barrel mounted sight. Now, I am NOT one to leave a screw hole open without a blank. Have tools, will tinker.

I screwed both in to their stopping point. Next I took a hack saw and made one, rear pulling, cut on each screw just above flush. Grasped each in a pair of needle nose pliers and cut off the bolt heads at the line. Next I sanded and smoothed out the rough edges, then took my cutting disk and cut a single line down the center of each. Wah-lah! Grab your small screwdriver and screw in your new blanks. You can go to the length of bluing if you like.

Front site removal? Took same hacksaw and literally cut the block off. Next came sanding with a palm sander.
Finished with 3,000 grit in the hand. Sand in-line with the bore so you don’t see any scratches.

Cool now you’re a flat-top!

Bearings haven’t yet shown, but I’ll do that maybe tomorrow at this point.

About your target . rubber mat would be better mounted at a 45 degree to direct pellet down to a sand trap or some other material to trap spent pellets.
In this vertical position it will ricochet the pellet back towards you .
Interesting..something that I can easily do by pulling the flap out the open rear. But I truly am curious how much bounce this has…most of the shooting will be done from 18 - 24y. I’m actually thinking these are going to bite in more than react in a dangerous manner. Safety glasses and extra plywood backers the first couple go-rounds. Thanks

Pellet trap is an utter success! It honesty couldn’t perform better. It’ll suck some into it, and as you shoot they pop innocently out…

I made a short, rushed video that I am working on. I am going to upload to YouTube. I am going to keep it “private link only” just for use on this thread. When I have some real time to sit down and take slow measured shots and a quality video, I’ll be sure to post that as well.

Scope and trigger -
Both wonderful. Often lose the crosshairs on the scope at the moment. I noticed a difference in different light. This is my first cheap scope purchase and I see why, 🤣😇

Trigger I can’t tell you how much of an improvement. Very happy camper!!

Another forum generated another suggestion!

New seal kit. Ok y’all here is where you come into play. Air gun actions are new to me. Firearms, not nearly so. I am capable of tearing this down, I know, yet never have. Anyone point me to the direction of locating a proper seal kit for my arm? Any sort of reading reference or link for me to access would be terrific! I’ll do some digging independently and report anything I find as well. Much obliged!

My breach seal appears semi flattened directly at 12 o’clock…could account for the height issue, regardless it’s not helping anything.

Went to pyramid air and have a new 25mm breach seal, some gamo rocket’s as a recommendation, an H&N flavor domed lead 18gr, and some cleaning pellets headed my way. Said it’d be here by Black Friday. Will report back in when above tinkering is complete.

Depending on my level of interest, if I were to go further down the rabbit hole….an RWS Diana seems to be a swell trainer to add. I enjoy the process of making something work. Hence this entire endeavor. However, I can easily see something from their line fitting my needs. In an attempt to better inform myself on their product line, I can’t seem to find a general “manufacturer’s homepage” so to say. I suppose I can click the various listings and thumb through. Oooh maybe download a 2022 or 2023 catalogue and read. I see their 48 line uses a side cocker. That’s an entirely new thing to read upon alone!
