Experience with .177 16.2gr JSB Pellets

Hi, they are excellent pellets, that work exceptionally well from 850 fps to 1000 fps.
Not had a single issue with rifled choked barrel or polygonal unchocked barrel. Good weight consistency
Thanks for your input! I don't much have experience with the 16.2gr JSBs. Most of the discussion I have found compares the 10.34gr and the 13.43gr JSBs. I'm not a hunter so I'm not concerned with ultimate fpe, but I am looking for accuracy out to about 90 yards. My thinking is 16.2gr pellets should give a better BC at 860 to 890 fps than 10.34gr and the 13.43gr JSBs.

Hi Fderry, You just need as much power behind it as you can get to shoot right in an FX - 140-150 bar.
It performs well above 930 - 950 fps. On long range shooting you will experience as soon as the speed drops under a certain speed (900ish) the start flying in spirals. I shoot them at 1020 fps in my RedWolf and at 980 fps in my Crown where i am able to make sub inch groups at 100m if i can beat the wind. And it is the most accurate pellet in the wind at long range.

But not all rifles has enough power. You should treat them as Slugs and you will be very happy with these heavy pellets also at 100 meters distance.
If you shoot them too slow you might experience good results at 30 meters and awful at 50 meters and longer .
High exit speed keeps them laser for a long distance.

Thank you for your input. Most of the US shooters of .177 are interested in FT or HFT with limitations of 12fpe or 20fpe so most of the expertise is with a ~10gr pellet. I have moved to .177 pellets because I like the challenge of shooting it between 25 and 90 yards on my home range as accurately as possible. Therefore the pellet fpe is not an issue for me. My reading indicates a higher BC translates to better accuracy in windy conditions. Also, a larger mass and faster velocity for a given caliber seems to translate to a better BC. This is why I’m asking about the JSB 16.2gr pellet.

Unfortunately the weather this time of year limits my accuracy testing. I can tune (by shooting out an open door) with different regulator and hammer settings for the best crony numbers, but they don’t necessarily translate to the best accuracy when the weather allows me to get on the bench for accuracy testing. So far I have limited my pellet testing to a velocity of 900fps and lower based on my past experience with Diabolo pellets of various calibers. Because of weather I have time to tune for a faster velocity even though it is out of my comfort zone. I’ll give your recommendation a try because I’m curious and have time to test it.

At this time I’m not interested in tuning for slugs in my Crown Mk2 with 500mm barrel. I have a FX Impact Mk2 P/P that I have converted to .177 with 600mm barrel that I intend to tune for slugs in the future.

Hi Frank,
I see you have an Impact too and want to tune it for slugs. I upgraded my .177 FX liners several times to find a liner that shoots various slugs well.
The new Heavy liner does them all better than the previous liners. It even shoots 8.44 and 10,34 gr pellets better than before. Now it can also shoot the JSB 10.03 gr. Knockout slugs very well. Just a recommendation. I would say in risk of starting a poopstorm that this is the only liner you need. The previous liner that I purchased was the 700 mm Superior liner. And the choke in this is so tight that you cannot push a JSB beast through the choke. It needs several punches on the push rod to get it through the choke. The new Superior Heavy i purchased should have been a gift from FX for testing my patience.

I purchased since i got my crown in .177:
1. new STX 500mm
1. new superior 500mm
1. new 600 mm barrel kit with Superior 600 mm liner
1. new 700 mm superior liner + Barrel caliber change kit at huma.
and now latest
1. new 600 mm Superior heavy liner.

On my Daystate Redwolf i just have and ever needed the Barrel it came with.
I will not say the the new FX superior heavy liner is as good as the RedWolfs LW ART polygon barrel. But I will admit it gets close.

Sorry - I took the the chance to let some steam out

Claus,
A little over 2 years ago I decided to convert my PCP collection to .177. Six months ago I finally found a .177 FX barrel kit and bought it. If I hadn’t converted the Impact I was going to sell it. Most of the posts I had read up to that time indicated the FX .177 liner was less than stellar but I decided to take a chance. Once I installed the barrel kit and tuned the Impact I was surprised and pleased with the accuracy with 13.43gr pellets in the Impact.

When I saw the Crown Mk2 VP on sale a little over a month ago I couldn’t resist (I always wanted a Crown). My plan at this time is to tune the Crown for 16.2gr pellets (the reason for this thread). I will then tune the Impact for whatever is the best shooting slug. I tend to tune for the best pellet/slug in a PCP and leave it setup for that pellet/slug. I am in a position that I can dedicate a gun to a given pellet or slug.

Based on your “rant” I went looking for .177 Superior Heavy Slug Liners in both 500mm and 600mm. The only vendor I found in the US (SPAW) that lists them indicates they are on back order and to send them an email requesting an update on availability. Today is a holiday in the US so I will await an update. Had the same issue when I was originally looking for the .177 conversion kit for my Impact. It took almost a year to find one in stock. It seems like FX isn’t that interested in .177 in the US market!

I shoot the JSB BEAST .177 at @ 970's with stellar accuracy.
The now obsolete H&N Sniper Magnum shot similar if not a tad better
Never have tried the JSB BEAST .177, but the H&N Sniper Magnum 14.97 pellets also did VERY well out of my Fortitude. Don't remember the FPS, but given I was shooting Crosman 10.5 domes at the time at ~750fps, I would guess that the Sniper Magnums were doing about 700fps or less.

They were MARVELOUS! Sub MOA out to 50 yards and hole in hole (literally) from 10 to 35 yards.

Today, there is NO H&N pellet that works well for me... (heavy sigh)

Thankfully, I only have a few full tins of H&Ns that don't work well in ANYTHING I own.

Oh, just to be truly honest, the last batch of JSB 10.34 pellets I bought had more problems than the Crosman pellets.

Fortunately, the FX variety (and maybe the AirArms, but I have never bought them) show GREAT consistency and quality control.

Not so much for the "general" JSB pellets. The problem is that the conical shape of the inside of the skirt was not consistent.

It looks like a different pellet (and I really think it is, but I don't have a scale to measure it) because many of the pellets have a distinct squared off look to the inside of the skirt. I can only assume that there is a difference in the sectional density and therefor the BC and behavior of those pellets.

I would post a picture, but my flip phone camera is not capable of capturing what I am talking about. At least I don't think so...

The best I can describe it is that the "normal" JSB 10.34 pellet, when looking at the back, up the skirt, has a conical form.

The ones I am talking about, the skirt has a squared off look. As I said, I can only assume the weight is different, and I am confident that the sectional density is different.

Oh well, seems I am the ONLY one who has noticed this... so until others echo what I have said, I guess I am a liar.
