Brocock/BRK BRK Atomic/Ranger XRs… outsized power

30 FPE+ PCPs, like ICBMs are overkill in many environments. So they simply cannot be deployed. Practical, tactical nukes like the Atomic or Ranger XRs can be unleashed quite effectively in many confined and extended environments. They are simply murder on chipmunks, rats, sparrows, squirrels and starlings out to 50+ yards and woodchucks out to 30 yards for me. 17 FPE of outsized smack down. I know there are other low power PCPs. And I give a nod to “all” the other low power hunter/pesters. But am speaking to higher build quality and unflinching, reliable, consistent performance, right out the box. As I see it that throne is currently occupied by the BRK Atomic and Ranger XRs. They are just that Boss.

Whoa , whoa there, I actually had a BRK ranger, 25 FPE max! I found it underpowered and overall, respectively- a bit lacking. Now, mr Leon , I respect your position wholeheartedly, but my personal experience must be revealed. I would never crap on a brand, opinions vary. But this model left me underwhelmed. I’m sorry. Mine was the 25 cal and it was about 21 FPE max, with no increase in shot count by lowering power lever.

Yes, but that’s because the .25 is ill suited for such a “small” platform and hence a “bad caliber choice“ on your part. Why oh why buy a .25 in such a small gun? This platform shines best in .177 and .22. I do respect your opinion but you simply chose the “wrong” caliber for the platform…. For comparison, my Pathfinder XR does 25 FPE in .22, which is plenty of power for small pests out to 100 yards. Same power as your Atomic in .25 but with a flatter trajectory…🙏🙀

Ok , fair point there. I was just getting the vibe of strong power from you with this platform. Now it’s a handy , versatile piece to be said. As a walking platform, I’m sure it’s top notch. But as a bench type piece, EHh, maybe not. Now, with the smaller caliber, I may be talking out of my poop chute. But I’m used to a bit more power, but I’m a stationary shooter. 👍

@rangur1, emphasis on ”low powered” goodness. I don’t believe the .25 is a low power caliber… Off the bench today with my Atomic XR .22, multiple hits at 102 yards on squirrel size targets… My Atomic XR simply amazes me, consistent, first round hits, 25, 30, 40, 50, 54, 60, 102 yards… Thousands of pellets down range and I still giggle at the hits. Typical targets are black walnuts…

With great respect, I do not doubt you in any regard as to accuracy. It’s impressive, my only qualm is terminal power on receiving end at those impressive distances. My shooting accuracy leaves a bit to be desired, hence I fall back on higher caliber and power. In the end , I will yield to your familiarity with this platform. 😊👍

One of the first things that I do with a newly purchased gun (pistol or rifle).
Lower the firing pressure. In my case, I see no reason to have a gun shooting 875 / 900+fps for use in my short range. Even up to 50 yards.
Plus. it's MUCH easier on all of the o-rings and hard parts, not to have to control that much pressure.

Regulator pressure is set to about 90 to 100 BAR, and final fps, is around 800 / 825 fps on all of my rifles. No need for more.

I humbly submit a simple layman's opinion on the .177 or .22 BRK Atomic-Ranger as a very compact platform that owns the space to sixty yards. By this I mean it can be lightly field carried and then deployed quickly to shoulder firing with great target accuracy for this shooter.
With any further or greater distances requiring more detailed shooter attention to their targeting environments.
Designed as a small air tube powered very compact and mobile platform aka truck gun.
Dana Webb in his AAA Evol testing video has also video proven this little platform's designed tank like survival capabilities.
It simply wasn't design engineered to compete with or be a game taking 100m Kentucky bench rifle.

Am not advocating shooting critters with it at 102 yards, strictly plinking. For pesting small critters, sub 60 yards for me.

I must confess to a bit of "drunk texting" the original night this post was created. Upon rereading it , I saw that i significantly misjudged where the objective of the post was heading. With me, when accuracy and distance are discussed, in my head, it's with terminal pesting in mind. I forget that it's not on every shooters agenda.
