FX Impulse Air Moderator Tuning

Did some moderator testing today with the Impulse Air 1350. The target card is 55 yards with (4) 5 shot groups. Top row is 3 baffles, middle is 4, bottom is 5. Groups were all pretty consistent 1/2” to 5/8” for the most part. A moderate 2-3 mph headwind did some pushing but nothing crazy. I saw a big difference when I moved it out to 103 yards. Groups circled in red are 5 baffles green are 4 baffles, no circles are 3 baffles which was the clear winner with 3 of the 4 groups under an inch with the best being .65”. The Maverick was on point today running the .25 FX 34’s at about 920 fps.

Interesting test. Is 3 baffles noticeably louder then 4 or 5?
How are the groups w/o the mod?
To be honest it’s not the best at actual sound moderation. 3,4, or 5 didn’t make much of an audible difference at my ear while shooting. Even with 5 baffles I’d say my little Donny Tatsu is quieter and that’s the loudest of my moderators aside of the impulse. If the weather is cooperative tomorrow I want to try 2 and 1. I’ve ran this rifle from low 40 fpe with kings up to 70 fpe with heavies and could never get it to print well without some sort of weight on the end, the best overall performance to date is the impulse with the 3 baffles.

Sean - from what I understand, the IA has very sharp cones and is excellent for moderating very fast flow. For example, the Huben pistol, which is PB loud without a mod, is tamed much better by a 4 section IA than even a Ronin. I was so shocked by its performance that I consulted the experts to find out why! As you note, the IA is pretty ineffective on a shrouded gun, including my Huben rifle, compared to a Tatsu. Mine had sat in a drawer for year collecting dust.

My favorite mod for the FXs out of the 20 or so that I’ve tried is the Altaros with muzzle break. I now have 4 of em - 2 on Pantheras, 1 on an M3 and the other on a wildcat. They’re long but very effective with no discernible impact on accuracy.

This is what the baffles look like so what you say makes sense. I have the Huma tensioned barrel system for the Maverick that does not have a shroud so maybe I’ll give that a try. I’ve used it with a Ronin and was taken back by how loud it still was. Looks like there will be more testing tomorrow.
