Inconsistency in Pellets can be frustrating

Hello everyone,

I just finished shooting a full tin (250 pieces) of JSB Jumbo 15.89gr pellets and found them to shoot fairly consistent at 10-meter and 25–yards. I opened a new tin (500 pieces), loaded 10 in the magazine and had to push with a good bit of force to load the first pellet into the rifle. Made the shot and the POI was almost 1-inch high left of the Bull. Second pellet also hard to load and the POI was 3/4-inch low right. Shot a third and the POI was 1-inch right. Removed the magazine and pushed out the remaining pellets. What the heck  ?

Got my Pellet Sizing Tool and inserted the first pellet. Normally a 5.5'ish pellet will drop about 1/3 the way into the Tool and require very little pressure to push it through. With this first pellet and the next four the pellet only dropped in to the point that the Skirt was flush with the opening. It required quite a bit of pressure to push them through and even the Head of the pellet shows where it contacted the inner wall ( see photo - yellow arrow ). I loaded and shot these 5 re-sized pellets and not one was within ½ inch of the Bull? So now I have 500 pellets that not usable. Note the wording on the Tin’s lid that I circled in yellow ~ Carefully Selected ~ really o_O???

Hello @beerthief

The problem is that the "head and skirt" are oversize and require force to enter the breech of the barrel. It is not with the magazine loading. I took the next weight JSB pellets that I have ( Jumbo Express 14.35gr ) and they load with no problem just like the original tin of 250 pieces 15.89gr.

This new tin (500 pieces) 15.89 are no where close to the correct size????

The 14.35gr pellets average 5.51, measuring 5 pellets
The "new" 15.89gr average 5.57 measuring 5 pellets. Some measured 5.59

I can always melt them down to make some very expensive fishing weights :(:p:rolleyes:

I would contact the company , detailing your frustration . Include more measurements (50 pellets ) and pictures of the can ,both sides and open showing pellets . I am sure they would like to know . They might send you some tins ?

I had a few tins of AA 25.4's last year that had wild throwers, thought for a bit it was my gun or something I did, tested some other pellets and problem went away, started measuring heads and confirmed some were off in size, 1/6 or so...definitely frustrating when this happens. I can only imagine how much small geometrical variances can cause your groups to grow.

Given the demand for product they are most likely running full speed , pushing equipment and workers .
Hello @beerthief

You are most likely correct. It is hard to spend your money on a product and not get a perfect one every time, however I must think of how many pellets each manufacture turns out each day, so "stuff happen" from time to time.

IMO JSB has been garbage for over a year now. I have taken to weight sizing then head sizing every batch I buy and have NEVER found any JSB pellets to be as advertised or labelled on the tins. Now H&N, that's a company getting it right IMO.
Hello @rsfrid

I placed an order yesterday for some H&N and some JTS in 18gr.

I bought some JTS to try this winter in my RAW 22 based on the recommendation of one of the members here that said they shot better in his RAW than the JSB. We'll see.
I recently bought several tins of JTS pellets in various calibers and weights and have been very pleasantly surprised. The 22.07 gr 0.22 cal ones shoot extremely well in my RAW HM1000X.

Thomas.....just 3 days ago I sized a FULL 500ct tin of JSB 18gr because all the domes (heads) were oversized and pushed in like a slug, tight....I was fortunate because when smaller like your tin, there is no answer...SO SORRY (and I was disgruntled....really!?....you have humbled me 🙏)! Are there any other PCP's you own that will shoot the smaller heads accurately?

The JTS right out of the tin shot very close to the sorted and weighed JSB in both my 22 cal and 25 cal RAW. BUT, they could not produce better groups than my sized and sorted JSB at 50 and 100 yards. close but measurably smaller groups from my sorted JSB. The JTS are very clean and when I weighed a tin of the 25 cal 29.32 grain pellets, there were about half of them weighed 29.4 and half weighed 29.3 and one pellet weighed 29.2 so they are much more consistent in size and cleanliness!!! Exceptional in those areas!!! The JTS open up more at distance than JSB.
The JTS 25.39 shot very well in my Taipan Veteran too, but again not as small?tight as groups as sorted and weighed JSB. I would use the JTS out of the tin for most shooting I do except for big competitions.
Thx
Dan

Hello @Ranchibi

That 250 Tin ( the correct head size) was the last of those. The 500 Tin ( the over size head ) I will run through my Sizer and use up over time. I have on order 5 Tins of the 18gr pellets and should be here in a couple of days. The lighter weight ( 14.35gr ) that I am shooting now will do until the new order comes in, so I am good.
