Joules for the casual airgunner

I'm just a casual target shooter/plinker out to 50 yards.
I'm interested in the Weihrauch HW97KT and contacted Krale for pricing.
Is online info available or is there someone who can explain this joules/fpe/fps thing?
I know it carries a lot of weight in Europe, but AFAIK its unlimited in the US.
The rep at Krale told me that nearly all their guns were 20 joule models?
Is this the standard?

Of course, the obvious next question is "How do I tune up my gun?"
I assume Youtube has the answers as usual....
You answered your own question there. Start with YouTube and then come back with questions.

Heres a bit to start with though. For the 97K, I really like the ARH kits and the Vortek kits. You can't go wrong either way. I would replace the piston seal with the Vortek piston seal while you are in there. You said you were retired so I just thought this was worth mentioning. If you power tune that gun it will make it harder to cock the gun. Some of the retired guys at the club do not like shooting my higher powered underlevers because it really stresses their shoulders. Even my 16J guns give some of the guys issues.

Welcome to the rabbit hole and to the forums.

Since you are in the states, most use fpe.

Field target is a blast. I attended my first match last month and was hooked. Most shoot pcp, but there are piston divisions.

I started looking at springers this week. Pyramid air and airguns of Arizona both have them and descriptions of each. Plus on the website. There are many good YouTube videos on them.

Also check out the standard rifle section here as there's some good threads too.

@craz4gunz I just saw you're in Maryland. I'm just over the border in PA. If at some point you would like to make a drive out to the club here (about an hour and a half from you) you can use some of my guns for a bit to get a feel for them before you spend a lot of money. Just throwing the offer out in case it helps.

My approach is to not jump into tuning a gun right away, rather to shoot it first. Run a tin or three of pellets through it first, then decide if there are characteristics you want to address and tune accordingly, if at all. A springer’s shooting behavior can change after breaking in. After break in you may like it as is.

20 joules = 15 fpe.

Up until recent retirement, I've been a centerfire shooter most of my life.
Looking forward to learning this new (for me) terminology and technique and showing it in the field.
Thanks for your reply.
I ordered my 97K blue laminate in .20cal from AoA. So I'm patently waiting.

I am thinking about buying the Weihrauch Rifle bag from Krale, but I want to be sure that it will fit the 97K with an E.O. Helix, 6x24x50 scope on it.
👍

Thank you all for your replies. As I said, this site is a very good resource!
Craz take him up on it as thats a GREAT offer and awesome. The only problem is you will likely be instantly hooked. This is an example of how awesome the community is. I had something similar happen to me. I went to observe a match at my local range and ask questions. The next thing I knew, I was handed a rifle and told I was participating. I didnt want to impose and others said I wasnt, and to take him up on his offer. I was SOOOO hooked. It was so peaveful yet fun.

Sqwirl57: I always knew you were a sand up guy and so helpful here. That offer just confirms that.

oooooo i hate you lol. I was looking at one of those. I LOVE the blue stock. Ill be curious what you think about it. Especially in 20 cal as I hadnt thought much about it until I saw frank discussing the caliber.

I have no ETA on the Blue Lam, but I ordered two guns and both were said to be out of stock on the websight, but the .20cal HW30s turned out to be ready to ship. I have 4 1/2 500ct tins through it and it has turned out to be one of those" I can't stop shooting it" guns. Lol
I need to put the chronograph on it to see how it compares to my .20cal Sheridans, in velocity at different pump ranges. I currently have that HW30s zeroed at 75 yards, which is the extreme reach of its abilities. I have the Blu Lams scope on it at the moment.

Don't get hooked on the more power kick with a springer. Springers take a lot of skill to shoot accurately and the more power the more skill is required. It's not like shooting a powder burner. With a powder burner when you pull the trigger the bullet starts it's travel down the barrel. With a springer You have the piston and part of the weight of the spring accelerating towards the muzzle while the pellet is still just sitting in the breach. Guess what that's doing to your poa? What this all boils down to is the more powerful the springer the harder it is to be accurate with it. A lot of people who see a springer shots at 1200 fps+ think, 🥰 that's what I want. They soon get disillusion with their new rifle and it starts just sitting in the corner and ignored.

Personally .. if just starting looking at HW. Maybe start with a hw95 or R9 . ( or any hw break barrel)

Pretty cut and dry simple to take down , maintenance, then tune stuff, overload of any help on line or forums . And will shoot just as good as a 97/77.

Then once you run through it and know most ins and outs of it . Step up to a underlever .. (opinion)

Thank you all for your suggestions. Please understand that I am not a new shooter.
I have a couple of of "entry level" springers and have learned them out to 50 yds or so.
Shooting hi-power centerfire for as long as I have has translated pretty well to the airgun for me.
I just need to practice the terminology/technique (e.g., the artillery hold - yeah try that with a centerfire!)
From what I've seen and learned online, the Weihrauch 97 has a lot of appeal and is not out of reach financially.
