I was curious because I haven't shot both but am looking at the m3 compact for squirrels. I have a prophet in 22 that I tuned to about 50fpe with the 25 redesigns that I use now and it's a shooter. I thought about getting a 25cal in the impact since I don't have a 25 yet well that's wrong I have a 25 in a gen marauder but I never shoot it anymore. Need to sell it.I would like to add. I would carry the Evol more on this trip but I have a coyote problem. Even though the Impact is shooting pellets, they are 28gr going 935fps so I have a more confidence in them hitting a coyote than a 16gr doing 890.
To be honest that has what has stopped me from getting a impact is the problems you read about with them leaking and point of impact changes daily. I know with my rti it does wonderful. It's always on. It did have a leak but all that was the rear foster fitting for tethered shooting was leaking a little. I am a set it and forget it type guy too so if I could get a impact compact in 25 to shoot well and just hunt with it I would but I have four friends that have impacts and two of them are pretty decent and the other two never seem to work. I hate to let people who had bad experiences change my mind because I'm sure there's plenty of people who has had great experiences with the gun. I just want a solid hunting gun I'm not trying for excessive power no slugs will be used in this gun.I have a P2 in .25/.30. I wish I would have brought that gun. I will next year. I topped the M3 off last night to 250b. Six hours later it’s at 235b. I put air in it 2 days ago and wondered how it got so low when I’m still on the same mag. It’s probably leaking. One of those super slow pain in the butt leaks to find.
Ok good to know. I am looking at a Huben in 25cal as well. I love the looks and size of the impact compact for hunting and probably would just stick to pellets for squirrels in the 25cal. I'm not the most gentle with my hunting guns but not really rough either. I lean my gun against trees all the time when hunting and sometimes the occasionally fall over. If an impact can take that it would work out great for me. I just know my buddy when we go hunting together he always has to check his zero and shoot a few rounds off to settle his standard m3 in and he's usually good for the day.I hunt with all 3 of my Impacts. Two are slug shooters and one is a pellet gun. The most wicked one is my .25. It mostly gets treated like a groundhog gun. Almost never in the woods being treated like a real hunting gun. The .22 slugger and this gun see woods time. Real hunting situations. The M3 has some real drawbacks when in a real hunting environment. One is the bump factor. Can you bump your gun and out of paranoia have to check your zero. Two is the micro and macro wheels. I can’t even count how many times I’ve moved them while hunting and handling the gun. Shooting pellets, no big deal as long as you’re not shooting far. Shooting slugs, well you’re off your tune. Third is temperature swings while hunting. Will your Impact shoot the same from sun up to sun down with all those pieces bolted together. Last is all the open areas on an Impact for woods debris to get into. Mainly the big hole by the micro that you can see your hammer spring. And the trigger area where your reg is.
Having massive power potential on tap and being able to control all aspects of it is why I have two of them for shooting slugs. I wanted the challenge of making them consistent guns versus the challenge of modding a gun for power. After several years in slug land I wanted to see what life was like with an Impact that was just set up conservatively for pellets. There is a positive difference when sticking to pellets. The gun isn’t as quirky or sensitive. But the hunting shortcomings that I listed still exist. Because of the 11 million projectiles I have fired out of Impacts testing, tuning and barrel building, I’ve become very comfortable with the ergonomics of the platform. Along with the shot cycle. I own a lot of guns and the only gun I’m more comfortable with is a traditional rifle carbine. Bottom line is I know what a M3 is capable of on a given day. I’ve been occupied with trying to make them do it every day under all conditions. It’s my hobby within a hobby.Well it says something to you having three of them so you must like them enough to mess with them
