Crosman Buyers remorse

Hey!

New here, I just ordered a crosman 1720t used. It seems like a great little thing, but I am not sure if it is the right thing for me.

Would be nice if anyone convince me it is, or if not show me what I should set my sights for.

I want a small thing, that goes easily in my backpack, for medium to long trips. Where I am fully packed up with hammock and what ever I need for that trip.

I have seen some birds at some of the locations, mainly mallard and some other species. I want to be able to take a mallard down at around 15-20 yards.
And a few times I see rabbits too, so it would be awesome if the little thing I carry have enough power for that.

I see how the crosman is a very nice pistol, and it will for sure get use. As my friends kid, is about to start trying to shoot. And what better is there to shoot with as your first shots than that..

But I still feel it is underpowered for what I want it to do.
Was looking at the mods, and I see most saying to not put it up too high in the power department for it will lose accuracy. And I am very open for suggestions for mods, because I know it will happen anyways.

The 1720T has an excellent reputation for accuracy and is a quite capable small game gun. As always, shot placement is the key to success.

Some years ago, my buddy left his 1720T with me to do a 12fpe tune. Using a bstaley O-ring buffer, I ended up with 34 shots from the small tube:

Details of the settings documented here:

I took it to the pecan orchard a few times and brought home some meat from each outing. As I recall, the only time I missed with it was a result of some difficult terrain that gave me trouble gauging the distance.

Having said all that, I'd have to say Dean's advice on the Umarex Notos is definitely something to consider. The larger caliber will afford you more margin for shot placement, especially for vitals shots. When I'm using a .177 cal, I'm going for brain shots almost exclusively unless it's something very small like a rat, chipmunk, or house sparrow.

Yeah, I have read about the bstaley mod. And it looks like what I will go for on it. And first off, I do feel some comfort in those words and pictures. 9 of 10 times it will be mallard for me. At quite close range. Just a random rabbit here and there. And yeah, what he linked was 10/10 just like I have thought about the marauder. But they are very difficult to get here. I will maybe give it a shot and give it the chance after getting to know it more :)

Is there no point in a larger tp with the bstaley mod?

I am excited about the accuracy it has, and that a kid is going to be lucky enough to have that as the first workhorse. Most likely it will get donated to the kid when they are responsible enough.

Sorry, I overlooked your question earlier when I checked in.

If you want to maximize your shot count, the ideal transfer port size is whatever allows you to reach your velocity/energy goal when the gun is filled to its maximum safe working pressure (3000psi for the 1720T).

For example, I used 0.094" for the 12fpe tune. Had I opened the porting up more, I would've had a choice:
  • Tune it for higher energy and fewer shots (say, 23 shots at 15fpe), or
  • Tune it for the same 12fpe at a lower fill pressure and accept a lower shot count

I found a kit where the hole is 0.105, will that do a lot of difference in how I need to tune? As I do not feel too secure in drilling it I find that idea more appealing. And I do not ruin the main tp if I **** up.
