Troubleshooting and repair. Of "mystery model" 760 PowerMaster

After introducing myself, decided was more appropriate beginning separate thread for troubleshooting/repair of Crosman 760 PowerMaster.

I will be taking lots of pictures beginning disassembly, having blanket spread on floor below my work area, to catch any errant parts trying to make their escape 😉

Yes, I disassembled my Crosman 760 many times at the age of 10-14.
Easy to work on ......... as I remember the magazine (BB) feeder with spring was problematic to reinstall.

That gun is probably the most popular medium quality (BB/Pellet) plinker in US history.
It easily outsold the higher quality Sheridan, Benjamin and previous Crosman 101/102 because it was so Kid friendly.

However, because of their lower build quality and the fact they were more of a Kids gun -- I'm not sure how many survived.
The incarnation of the PM 760 in the last 30 years is a poor reflection of what the gun once was. The first couple generations were pretty nice.

It is sort of amazing to me, that a BB gun old as this, still has parts available and it's build quality/design is such that it's able to be rebuilt ad infinium.

The closest "parts breakdown" I've been able to comparison "parts match" with, suggest this PowerMaster model was manufactured from 1966 to 1976.

I can't think of too many consumer goods built to last decades, having such a long lasting design; mostly today seeing engineered obsolescence, being barely good enough to last through product's warranty period, which seems to be the common general rule of manufacturing.

I kind of see it from a different standpoint. To me the current Crosman 7xx's make a lot more sense. They're just cheaply built bb guns that are mostly intended for children. They're not particularly powerful or accurate and they're not intended to last a lifetime or to be passed down to anyone.

The older guns seem kind of depressing to me, like they could have been so much more. I really like the Smith and Wesson M77 as it looks like the air rifle the Crosmans and Daisy's should have been.

Sorta has that Ruger #1 appeal

Planning to "live long and prosper," anticipate becoming centenarian curmudgeon, living long enough to be a problem to my "rebellatives"...lols 🤣

I prefer for things built the old fashioned way: well built to last and sturdy enough for decades and be rebuilt.

My millennial nephew sees things in the polar opposite fashion, IE: Don't repair! Throw it away, and buy the latest and greatest.

As old "carnies" proclaimed: "Ya pays yer monie and takes yer turn". Different strokes for different folks. "One man's meat is another man's poison"

This being a Sunday, local hardware store is closed. Gone as far as I can today, unsure when I'll get back to BB gun repair project for PowerMaster, I've packaged everything up and placed on my repair shelf.

From my perspective, PumpMaster previosly repaired is a simplification of PowerMaster currently being repaired.

PumpMaster uses cheaper, lighter materials, while having fewer parts than PowerMaster.

One thing is certain: both BB guns were headed for the trash, neither cost me any money, so whatever I put into replacement parts is my cost, since for me, troubleshooting/restoration is entertainment 🙂 so I don't count labor into my costs.

"J", it took some elbow grease cleaning off decades of residue, revealing an "8" followed by "0" stamped on front of pivot housing.

Therefore August (8th month) year 1970 (where 2= 72, then 0=72-2=70)🙂

Yes, that would be an August of 1970 build.

My older brother got one in '67 and we had a blast with it. Enough that I looked for and eventually found one like it. The plastic garbage 760s that they've made since the 80's were not designed to be used and treasured like the originals were. They're made to make money, nothing more.

Good luck with getting it back together. I shoot mine more than any of the others I have.

Cheers,

J~

My favorite from the early teen years .... The Crosman 622 repeater. Countless Co2 carts and empty tins of Benjamin .22 pellets !!! View attachment 436831

Sorry for the de-rail of your post ... oups
Yeah Scott,
I got the Crosman 622 for Christmas in about 1972/1973 and never liked it  ?
I continued using my PowerMaster until I got a used Benjamin 342. That's the last pellet gun I owned until 2012.
Still have the Benjamin - pictured below with my Son.

Memory what it is ... my recall of the AG journey in my youth was .... Red Rider .... Some beat up German break barrel .... Crosman 760 .... Crosman 622 .... Sheridan Blue streak .... FWB 124 at @ age 22
From there ... we won't go there ... lol :ROFLMAO:

I can't resist modifying and customizing whatever I've got, suiting my purposes.

Installing carry sling on lightweight 760 PumpMaster provided me with a practical advantage, but I'm aware purists somewhere likely sneer in disdain lol 😏

Typically cast my own lead pellets (unless feeling lazy or pressed for time), and lately considering pellets could become more accurate by making rifling button, rifling/improving PowerMaster's accuracy.

Hopefully I'll be able to resist modifying for C02 cartridges LOL.😁

If you think that's bad , you should see the look on faces of tractor purists viewing what i've done to my old antique Ford tractor l o l 🤣 Tickles my funnybone every time "let 'er rip!" with Ooogaaah horn.

Cost of horn, cheap. Look on purist's face, priceless! 😄😆😂😊

From this experience, imagine consternation on someone's face when they see my tricked out "tacti-cool" PumpMaster 😆

My sense of humor getting me in trouble again, adding unnecessary features simply for annoyance factor lols 😇😆😅🤣😂😊 something like attached "overkill" photo lol🤪😉

Not to totally sidetrack, but:
Daisy model 10, Daisy 1984 Winchester, Daisy model 25, Sheridan Blue Streak, Crosman 760, Crosman 622, Crosman 101, Benjamin 342 (1975) .... then Hatsan 95, 1000x & 135 (2012/2014). After I got a Weihrauch HW35E in 2016 ....... it's been all Weihrauch with a few AA stops in-between.

That’s a good looking rifle except for that plain Jane scope. I think it needs one of these.

It's 29F now, by afternoon 66F expected, so good day to toss 760 parts in backpack, hoof it into town and match up what's available at hardware store for PowerMaster seals replacement.

1 1/2 mile walk to town provides daily exercise required by my doctor. I try to walk much as can (doctor's orders), but sometimes legs give out before completing ordered exercise, so got myself a bicycle. Works pretty good most of the time, until occasionally my trick knee goes out, leaving me in pain and stranded, so I can then make it home, I motorized my bicycle.

At next doctor's appointment when was inquired, told him that, yes, I'm getting my exercise as ordered, but I had to switch to a bicycle, because my legs sometimes just couldn't hold up long enough. He was fine with that, but then imagine the look on my doctor's face, when I told doctor, due to my sometimes troublesome trick knee, motorized my bicycle. Doc asked: You bought a bicycle for exercise and then motorized it? 😄😁😇

What I learned: Never trust the advice of a fat doctor who always drives his mercedes to work everyday.

I have a pretty good notion from that visit, of what the look of my doctor's face would be, if shown a picture of my "tacti-cool" Powermaster BB gun lols 🤣
