Yes maybe a heavier hammer will be an improvment ; I think mine is standard . Thanks

since I am very interested in the specifics of a
short barrel (380mm) -- in .30cal.
(And I have heard of the tremendous benefits of a longer barrel, yes!!)

What power can I expect at this length?
🔸Would you state pellet and muzzle velocity?
🔸Maybe even the regulator setting?
🔸Crown Mk1 or Mk2 (I hear it has a different plenum?)?
🔸What can you tell me about the loudness at that power? And the silencer that is required to make it "backyard-friendly"?
🔸Would a larger plenum help with more power -- and/or less shot noise?


Thanks for your input. 😊 This is a new area in airgunning for me, and I can use all the help I can get.

The Crown .30 with a short 380 mm barrel, is a fun, powerful, accurate and agile rifle!

1. There are at least 3 different styles of FX barrel transfer ports....A. Early style oem transfer port with 1 hole, B. Late style oem with 2 holes (pellet/slug), and then C. The $28 Huma high flow transfer port. I believe most people using the oem transfer port with 2 holes, or the Huma High Flow, simply rotate the barrel and use the larger (slug) hole, even when shooting pellets.
2. The HST knob on the side of the Crown, if set to "MAX", may NOT provide the most FPS! Depending on reg setting, the barrel transfer port your using, and your projectile weight, it is possible that you could get an increase in FPS, simply by decreasing the HST knob adjustment.
3. Generally speaking, a .30 projectile traveling at 860 FPS is just about the ideal speed for accuracy.

Many variables, even with the simple Crown!
Very few rifles, offer more power, in a shorter overall length, than a .30mm Crown with a 380mm barrel.

I have experimented with several .25 and .30 caliber barrels for my Crown, in a variety of lengths.
My personal favorite combination, of all that I experimented with, is a short 380mm .25 barrel, with the reg set at 150.
This combination offers me great accuracy, and a very short overall length.
Ive never seen Crown plenum size data published, but the MK2 has a (28%?) larger plenum, compared to the early MK1. I had a long, in-depth conversation with Earnest Rowe some time ago, about the Crown MK1 and MK2 plenum differences. He informed me that there was nothing inadequate about the smaller MK1 plenum! The larger MK2 plenum is slightly more powerful vs. the MK1 plenum. Not a huge increase like you would get by increasing barrel length, but slighly more powerful.
Yes, a short barreled, .30 Crown is loud, although not as loud as others. Even with a Donny FL Emperor, its still somewhat loud for some neighbors.
A short barreled, 380mm .30 Crown is a very accurate and AGILE rifle.
You would be very hard pressed, to find a SHORTER, more accurate conventional style rifle, that offers more power than the 380mm .30 Crown!

That the DFL Emperor at this setting might not be enough for the backyard is disheartening, bummer.

The shortest .30 barrel I own is the 500mm, and I would need to reinstall a .30 barrel, to get you some numbers.
I do have a 380mm barrel in .25, and its currently installed, if that would help you.
And as I recall, the 44 grain .30 JSB's, were more accurate for me, as opposed to the heavier 50 grain.

Why?
Because it's rarely been used.
And so, there is very little data out there.

But, before I make a decision to possibly cut a perfectly good .30cal barrel down to 400mm (or 500mm) — I want to know a little as to what to expect.


(To explain: I have had this .30cal bug in my ear for some time now.
And an AGN buddy has booked a medical emergency flight to operate on my ear to get the bug out....: He's bringing me a 600mm .30cal barrel — that should cure me. Right?
However, there is this nagging thought: Besides making smashing hits with the 600mm barrel.... — How cool would it be to video pigeons eliminations with a 26" (65cm) short package (RTI Prophet Compact) that spits out .30cal slow flying lead?!
I got a hold locally of a China barrel that could supply a 400mm short range barrel....).



Now, just today I received a phone call to invite me to come to my very first rat permission ever. After knocking on over 25 doors of potential rat permissions —

(just don't tell any non-airgunner friends about that, as they will think I'm crazy).

Yet another barrel to consider, would be the very early Crown MK1 barrels, with the ADJUSTABLE SHROUD thats slides back and forth, and locks into position.
I believe they were 500mm, (dont quote me on that)....but you could probably reduce its length by cutting at the breech end, and still retain the adjustability on the business end!
Do you remember the early Crown Mk1, and their adjustable length barrels?
A shorter version, might be ideal for your situation.

Have you shot a RTI in .30 yet? It was an eye opener for me. My shooting got worse as the distance increased. I refused to believe there was something wrong with the tune, gun or me. But there was something wrong with the gun. It needed weight strapped onto it. A lot of weight. All of my testing moving forward has about five or so more pounds attached to the gun so I can verify my accuracy at a setting. It’s a completely different animal than it was in .25 shooting 33.95’s.

A short barrel will get rid of the pellet sooner but it’s a blast cannon. A 400mm in .30 is definitely not a place where satisfaction will be found. 500mm in .30 did pretty good with pellets but not great when I started stretching them out. The RTI .30 barrel was just not an impressive barrel. It was an OK barrel. That’s why I built an adapter and use FX barrels. Easiest way to test lengths. If I come across a great .30 blank, I will build a real barrel for it in .30. And it won’t be 500mm.

I'm sure I'm in for a surprise on several levels when that .30cal barrel gets here....!

These posts are just lil' old me trying to pick my way through the barrel & caliber maze — the 600mm .30cal, then my China .30cal (700mm actually, with an option to shorten to 400mm), then there is a 600mm RPB .22cal within reach as well. 🤦🏻‍♂️
