Sightron S6 field target

Glad to read I'm not the only one whose memory for details isn't improving over the last quarter to half-century. Actually, it was me that proposed a new class allowing only single-shot slingshots , squint-eye aiming , and rock ammo (no rounder than the moon, as determined by qualified match directors ).

The proposed class was killed by dueling elements arguing whenever to call it Elite Class, or Woke Class.

While this thread is not the place for "Constructive" conversations on said subject, we do have the time and space to perhaps converse a bit

Open class ... On the ground or a 6" tall bag ... No sticks or taller seating allowed.
THAT RIGHT THERE eliminates quite likely 50% or more individuals who make up the ranks of current FT participation .. Oups !!

Now the AAFTA has not had an anwser either in what we might hope is wanting/wishing for growth within the ranks. But then again the "Hunter" classes became reality and has IMO and likely unarguable has saved AAFTA Field target from near oblivion.

With this the Power held by the rotating BOG, even tho "Hunter" has made for a brighter future, there is still a big disconnect on the changes that will keep FT alive for years to come under AAFTA sanction. Many have left, many have joined .. In Hunter mostly which should make a difference in bias of rule vetting and decisions, but does not seem to & correct me if mistaken.

Again thoughts, with staying on the view at this end as Disenfranchised more than not

Yep folks with bad shoulders, bad backs, bad knees, bad hips (prosthetics) especially, don’t need, and shouldn’t be, slamming their buttocks down on a 6” pad.

AAFTA should Stop imitating WFTF as they are and should be competing in their own world, as it should be. Same course- sure. Same event - sure. But why all this effort to make Apples and Oranges into one pie? This entire field target multiverse could use some simplification:

WFTF = two classes, <12 fpe international rules should apply:

PCP
Springer
Done.

HFT = two classes <20 fpe. No fixed HumV jeep mounts/tripods but everything else is fine:

PCP
Springer
Done.

Pistol: PCP / CO2 / Pumper = one class:

This pistol field target shooting (regardless of what you call it) is hard any way you play the game

See there - all fixed - put me in charge

Returning to this thread’s intent - maybe I’ll start shooting Open just so I can use my new S6 to it’s full potential?
Maybe I’ll learn what all the bitchin is about.
I guarantee that my new S6 is not likely to improve my forced lane shooting skills and put me on a podium; pew pew.

I believe the key limitation is 16 x. As I own the new S6 it’s amazing to 35 yards then blahzay but turn it to 30X and I can differentiate by the 1/2 yards to 65 yards easily… that said it’s 16X In HFT so blahzay

Hey, I’m curious about the focus adjustment, how is the yardage spread in the 35-55yd range compared to the S3? They’re touting a big difference but I’m wondering how significant it is? Thx

It is significant see the pictures I posted but remember to truly utilize the ranging resolution effectively you need a higher magnification level than 16X

Until today I have been very impressed with the Sightron S6 5-30x56 SFP. I just received the wheel I had made for it and set out to put some range marks on it. Things went well until about 40 yards. Up until that time I had my marks setup at yard intervals from 10 to 20 yards. From there on I planned my marks to be every 2 1/2 yards. From 40 to 55 yards I could do no better than 5 yard intervals. My S111 could do a little better than what this S6 is doing and I'm kind disappointed with that aspect. Maybe it is just my 77 year old eyes that is causing the problem but at 16X again it could be just too much for 16X to comprehend. This is still a good scope but maybe not as Field target worthy as I had hoped it would be at 16 power. For those of you that are waiting for the S6 10 - 60 x 56 I would ask Sightron if the new S6 scope will range find accurately in the 10-55 yards FT game. Get a documented positive answer before you waste almost $2000.00 is what I would recommend.

Update - Sightrons S6 for HFT specific use aka the S6. I’ve used it for several Hunter Field Target matches now, thinking I would replace my Sightron S3’s or Athlons on my field target guns.
Please remember this is a very general usage and field of view and ranging comparison against the dark painted Baton Rouge field target faceplates placed in open lanes and the brighter yellow painted faceplates in the woodlands or Boerne TX and my various colors of faceplates at home in black barrels - if I had a scope cam I’d film this but I don’t.

Initial findings were at 16X, the S6 FT specific scope is impeccable it brightness and target acquisition from 9.5 to 35 yards; unbeatable! BUT after 35 yards at 16X it is a bitc’n pain like all the other scopes I’ve bought and used to range find with.

Some uniformed conjecture to follow:

Apparently the extra cam? Inside the scopes parallax feature creates extra sensitivity in focal point parallax adjustments which creates greater sensitivity at higher magnification thus I can separate “inches”, yes INCHES, at 65 yards at max magnification, but this same feature makes it crazy sensitive at lower magnification and (I) blow right past the clarity crispy focus point…. I’m not an optician or scope reviewer, just an end user with 68 year old eyes.

Real world Data from 12 matches: regardless of gun, My previous KZ scores were seldom better than 42%. But I could / would average 30% in the forced lanes using Sightrons S3’s, Athlons Heras SPR 6-24x56 or S-Tacs 4-20x50 scopes; provided I turned down magnification for forced lanes to 10x or less.
This is noteworthy =!
With the S6 I scored 66% to 77% or greater overall for three consecutive matches. But apparently the added weight of the S6 wreaks havoc on my forced lanes; Specifically, in the last 4 matches I have hit zero positional shots or 8X4=32 missed KZ’s because of weight or a weight distribution issue but to be fair I have NOT reduced magnification in the forced lanes while using the S6 “yet” because I love the clarity as my KZ’s wobble about- stubborn fool perhaps?

Prior to yesterday’s match, i spoke with a WFTF shooter who also owns the new Sightron S6, he was teaching / coaching me on the somewhat peculiar and specific way to use the S6 more accurately. Which I haven’t had time to try “yet”. I’ll be trying his methods today? on home turf to see what I think; it Will be interesting, but all said and done…. Is the issue of missed kz’s in forced lanes a weight or magnification issue?

Maybe the S6 will work or maybe I’ll decide the S3’s are equally good/bad for HFT or maybe I’ll shift back to the Athlon Heras SPR 6-24x56 ??? Dunno but it is a hobby and I’m having a lot of fun spending time with it.

I had purchased an S5 5-30 for indoor benchrest - but found the 1/4 clicks too large. I now use it for outdoors. Glass is phenomenal.

But, what do you think about Sightron S6 FT ? I compared it side by side with my S3, much clearer and brighter, so far it's working well for me...

I’ve relegated my five 4-20x50 S-Tacs to my 3 HFT pistols and two Crosman HFT Challenger training/ guest guns

S3’s -

One S3 is on my multi function multi caliber Ghost - use includes .22 caliber bench rest

One S3 is on my LP Redwolf for HFT

I also have a S3 PLR on my .25 Redwolf EFT rig

S6 -

For now The S6 is on my H.P. Redwolf for HFT but I’m still alternating between them because of forced lane issues. Depending on weight issues I may move the S6 to the Ghost. Dunno yet, as the S6 is heavier than the S3’s and when a gun weighs more than 12.5 lbs I can’t hit in forced lanes.

I have a PRS Chassis / stock that I want to slip one of the Redwolfs into but that would make a 11 lb 12 oz gun 13 lb 12 oz

So that’s my update to date comparing the S3’s to the S6

Bottom Line? Lift my 16X mag limit and my S6 will sit perfectly on top of my favorite HFT rig…. Perhaps that’s actually a TM1000 pistoli

Quick update - the S6 ended up on my HP .177 Redwolf in PRS Chassis because, well, the combo is perfect for Bench Rest.

I have the S6 and S3ED fixed power scopes and at 40 plus yards I find the S3 gives a sharper picture. You are able to focus to a crisper picture with the S3 ED . However I lose the ability to lower the magnification.

The S6 has greater depth of field (area in focus) however the S3ED can focus more crisply. For fixed targets I feel S3 ED is superior.

My apologies- for misunderstanding the context.
At Phoenix Airgun Club (Mesa,AZ) we have an additional class for FT called unlimited. We can use range finder and any scope.

For under 16X I found the Meopta Optica 6 2.5-15x44 very good for air gun use before I replaced them with the Sightrons.

I have both the s6 doesn’t snap into focus like the Falcon too much play in s6 optic quality wise no different only thing I wish the falcons reticle was thicker , i bought the s6 and the hype my bad a like the Falcon better.
