Other How rare are the spring piston 10M airguns?

Thanks!

The diameter and distinctive side tab pattern identifies those as the classic design originally for Anschutz M18 sights (it's ingenious; since the tabs are assymetric in both horizontal and vertical planes, the inserts cannot fit upside down or backwards). These have been adapted by many other makers including Haenel and - as I've just learned! - later Walthers.

I revised my estimated numbers for Diana and Walther on my original post.

"Rare" can be because low production (LG54, FWB110), poor design (A250), quickly obsolete (A380), never sold in US (Haenel), very old (Falke 90, A220), hard-to-maintain (D75, D606566),...and not so rare because many were made, and they are just very good airguns(FWB 300S) or because they were/are the cat's meow, well appreciated, and living out most of their life on display or in the gun case (HW55)?

In the early 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Hаenel was exported in large quantities to the United States. One of the Haenel dealers was in Florida, there may have been others.

for every one on this thread , who would be the best qualified smith to tune my Webley MK3 down from 12.5 FPE to 8 FPE ? A fellow shooter in UK has his @ 8 FPE and says it is a dream to shoot .
Maybe David Slade at Airgunwerks? If you want to do it your self, contact TbT tuning in the U.K., he might be able to build you a tune kit.

Wow...I've never heard of Mk 3 that shoots that hard! 8 or 9 FPE is really the normal output for them. Dave Slade could certainly do it, but if you wanted to tackle it yourself:

+ Jim Maccari could tell you a good spring to use. IIRC years ago he recommend an HW 35 "soft spring" but that may have changed.
+ Vortek will custom-make springs to your specs. I have a brand new factory Mk 3 spring and will be happy to send you dimensions of it.
+ The Mk 3 is relatively easy to take apart - there isn't much pre-load on the normal spring (though might be diff for your current one!). The only trick is to remember that the big stud which receives the front trigger guard screw, and holds the threaded rear end on, has REVERSED THREADS (i.e., "righty-loosey").

I think for every thousand FWB 300S there are:

100 FWB 150/300
3 FWB 110
75 Anschutz 380
50 Anschutz 250
25 Anschutz 220
1 Anschutz LG54
100 HW 55
200 Walther LG 55
100 Walther LGV (original type)
5 Falke 90 (if this is even a 10 M airgun?)
200 Diana 75
200 Diana 60/65/66

Revised estimates, Walther and Diana, Jan 29
If I may ask: what are these estimates based on?

That's a really good question, I should have mentioned...
what I see on the big auction site, AA classified, information on the various forums especially this one, e-gun.de, what I've seen at various gun shows, and what I'm personally interested in (whoever even heard of an LG54!): in a nutshell, totally unscientific estimates.
FWIW, I've never seen a Haenel, most of your wonderful airguns, most of DMMikes's, most everything on the Garvin site, except in pictures...:)

That's kinda what I thought...but you did an excellent job of it, and it's spawned a most interesting discussion!

I actually touched an LG 54 at the old Roanoke VA airgun show once, lol.

On Egun, you can always buy any Haenel, if you are a resident of the European Union, within 250-300 euros, depending on the condition and model. These rifles are not rare, except for the MLG550 and 311-4 models, these rifles are really very rare and cost about 700 euros.

what is the Egun site ?

"eGun" is a big German gun auction site:
https://www.egun.de/market/index.php

Bad news: it's nearly impossible, and fantastically expensive, to get a gun shipped from there to the US, unless you have a friend in a EU country that will act as a middleman. Sometimes you can get the sellers to send smaller items like sights, but not often.

Good news: hey it's free to look at, and an excellent reference source. I love browsing around there, basically an online picture book of cool old airgun things. :D

For target air rifles, click on the "Druckluft Matchwaffen" link on the left. For sporter guns "Druckluftwaffen." Use the little search window to bring up sights: "Diopter" for match sights, "Kimme" for open rear sights, "Korntunnel" for front sights.

You really have to be careful with egun.de and the Garvin Vintage Airgun Gallery websites: these are so very good for folks interested in unusual airguns that you may not be able to pull yourself away from looking and may forget to eat...:):)

As for egun.de, sometimes the German seller will ship to NL, and some of the NL dealers will take the delivery and then ship the item on to the US. It's complicated, somewhat expensive, but it may be worth it to you?

Ha...that would be kind of a typical Mk 3! The gun is notorious for its huge transfer port diameter, which doesn't help. UK tuners sometimes sleeve it down to 3mm or so with good results.

Be sure the piston seal and tap are sealing well, and try different pellets. The traditional RWS designs - Hobby, Superdome, Meisterkugeln, Superpoint, Super H-Point - have really big skirt diameters which seal up nicely in the tap, and seem calmest in my .177 Mk 3's. To test sealing in any tap loader:

+ cock the gun
+ OPEN the tap (i.e., so the transfer port is blocked)
+ grasp the cocking lever...FIRMLY...!!
+ pull the trigger

If the piston seal and tap are doing their jobs, the lever shouldn't move very far, and will drift upward only slowly. But it can slam shut if things are loose.
