Air Venturi Avenge X .177 accuracy

I recently bought my first pcp rifle. The Avenge X tactical.
I have been trying out different pellets and slugs. However I am extremely inexperienced in the process of figuring out tuning, speeds, ect.
Past week I have been focused on JSB 13.43 knockout slugs. Just when I think I am shooting accurately, NOPE..... Hitting 50 yards all over the place....
I have installed the Nova Vista Power Plenum. Reg is set to 2000 psi. Adjusting H.S. from zero moving up 1/4 turn at a time creating speeds from 825 - 950 fps.
No matter what I do my accuracy is that of a 3 year old on speed coloring inside the lines.

I am struggling to determine if my barrel just doesn't like this particular slug?
Is it the wind?
Am I tuning wrong?
Is there a issue with my regulator?
Issue with something else I'm not thinking of?

Please advise.

Shoot .1771 slugs, it's what the avenger barrels preffer. Varmint Knocker makes .1771 sized slugs and so does Take Aim Airgun slugs. Both can be found on ebay. @RabbitofCaerbannog

mine doesn't do 13.43 well at all.. It DOES like the 10.03 MK.3s. i'm at 2100-2150 PSI.. I'm at 1 - 1 1/4 turns in from fully backed out on the HS.. I'm shooting them at 930-941fps and getting excellent accuracy. I've also had good results from heavy slugs like Griffin 13-14-16gr Flat Base .1771 slugs. Varmint Knocker 13.5 Flat base HP .1771 slugs, 16gr TAKE AIM AIRGUN SLUGs .1775( originally thought .1771 but its .1775.. these shot incredible from my Gen 1 avenger bullpup, EVEN AS slow as 760 MV when i was testing them. I'm slinging them a bit faster now and tested them out to 75y with results I am still having trouble believing are real.

i found that the KO 10.03s were GREAT.... Above 920fps. and above 2100. I tried them at 1800psi and they were ok.. but more like half inch groups at 30, basically 1.5-2moa to be expected at 100. I sped them up the next day and thats the Shoot N C target... dealt with some wind gusts on bottom Middle bullseye, then got more patient for left and right at 45y. and those are what i pulled.. the white target with Penned on targets... That was NO wind, 16gr Take AIM slug at 55y hunting a zero (i just got them today) and 75y once i found it.. Needless to say this is the best i've ever gotten with anything out of that gun.

as far as pellets.. 10.3JSB, 10.3 FX were fantastic. 10.65 baracuda match were good close in but fell apart after 35, CPHP Lite were surprisingly good although had issues slowing them down to pellet appropriate speeds... if you're shooting close, don't matter. CP Ultra Mags pretty ok. JSB and AEA 13.4 were good and 13.7 good.

Trigger pull, scope cant, and stable hold make a MASSIVE difference.. I, and many others have inclinometers and spirit levels on our guns. Tiny amounts of cant will absolutely cause tiny differences in point of impact when you SWEAR you're holding on the same damned spot.. If your Parallax isn't set exactly right.. if you're shaky, if you flinch in anticipation, pulling your head off the scope.. Keep your eye and scope on target, watch the pellet or slug travel to your target.. Focus on that trigger, Smooth and consistent. Make sure your holding the rifle and scope at the same angle no matter what. Make sure your parallax is good. I promise your groups will improve just doing that, even if your gun is set to the balance and harmony of a Tourette's afflicted parkinsons patient chihuahua smoking meth while sitting in a paint shaker while you try to take a treat out of its mouth.

just try every damn pellet and slug you can afford. However JSB KO mk3 is a good one to start with. aside from the 13.43s not shooting well out of mine at all, they don't expand worth a DAMN. terrible slug. I'd suggest KO 10.03 mk3s, 4.51, Cuda match 4.51, FX 10.3s, FX 13.4s (cheaper than jsb at the moment, basically interchangeable) or AEA 10.3 and 13.7s (or JTS). Boutique slugs seem to work best for .177 other than KOs and some Zans.

Get that damn trigger as light as you can safely operate. you CAN get it down to Ounces. the adjustments are there and you can put longer grubs in i belive 4x10 or 4x12 to get more adjustment, just get the E clips off the stock screws and replace with those grubs.

Ebay search "take aim airgun slugs" he offers 12gr-16gr and i have only tried the 16 to great effect, "varmintknockers" (13.5-16.5) Be sure to ask in the notes for .1771 also GriffinAirguns.com his .177 13-16gr flat base worked great for me in both my slug capable .177s.

it also doesn't hurt to burn a devotional candle with the sacred image of Paul Harrell on it at all times when firing any projectile weapon, at night pray while your right hand is placed on the OLDEST copy of the Lyman Reloaders handbook you can find.

Absolutely the best I've read on the internet this month.

Thanks for all the input!

SO......
Your information led me to a whole new mindset. I backed off to 25 yds. And I tested 6 different pellets and slugs.
I am hitting through the same hole every shot with 2 different pellets and 1 type of slug.
However now I known these are consistent, I am trying to reach out to 50 yds again and the accuracy has fallen apart like a 1971 Ford Pinto wagon that was maintained by a 7 year old, born as a result of a sister/brother relations on meth and moonshine.

Im wondering if you would share some input on where to begin making adjustments to correct this.
Or do I need to manage my expectations of accuracy at 50yds?

Any advice is much appreciated.

Now that you've found the projectiles, you're gonna do a workup on each one.. For example My gun shoots FX 10.3, Cuda Match 4.51-10.65gr, and Jsb/FX 13.4 as well as 10.03 Kos, and 16gr Take-Aim slugs. like a champ... with it tuned for 10.65 @ 950fps. By 35 the baracuda match sh*t the bed. Just open up unacceptably. If i slow it down and lower the pressures they get a little better. The 10.3 FX/JSB at 960 same story at 25, decent at 35, Sh*t the bed by 50. the 13.4s are unaffected because they're only going 852 at those settings. and the KOs are LOVING IT.

If i slow down to 920-930MAX muzzle for 10.65 or 10.3 the FX 10.3s hold tight for a good bit. i gave up testing them at 60 and they're still doing well. the 10.65 just aren't meant to be post 50. not in my barrel at least.

the KO are giving me about 20-30 fps less out of that gun. At under 900 they don't play well past 25 for me.. They just want a higher muzzle velocity,. The SECOND the KOs are OVER 930 they're lasers. I've had it set to 935 this weekend and the starlings Paid dearly out to 77 yards. I did NOT miss if there weren't environmental reasons or the bird hopping off at the last second or bobbing its stupid head. (trying to survive... what a d*ck)

Today I did some pressurey-springy messyaroundy and I've now got them at 962.5 and they've turned a .35" hole at 30 to a .2+/- hole at 30. They're still behaving out to 65, that's the absolute furthest I can stretch it at home. Shooting from the front yard into the back, everyone thinking I'm a lunatic.

I'm currently at 2300PSI (was at 2100) Now about 1.6-1.75 turns in from minimum on the Hammer spring screw. the gun is giving me a nice quick shot. 948.9-967.2 were the high and low.. Average ended up at 962.5 most shots between 958 and 965. 10.03ko for birding is just what I'm going to use. Now I've decided to stick with this and not change until its time to get something larger than pest birds, which is pretty much done until fall. then I know the 16grs work .

with the slugs the classic formula is High pressure, short hammer stroke... it works for me.

with pellets just find what works best.. It's in there somewhere if it's meant to be.

What is your thoughts on time between shots / temperature of the barrel?

Sometimes I will get a few close-ish shots and then out of the blue a zinger or two.
I typically feel like I know when it was me thar errored vs the universe gaslighting me. I can't quite put my finger on it. Maybe just a bad pellet randomly?
Seems like ill be hitting the dirt off a mosquitos wings one minute, all of a sudden I couldn't hit a rhino.

Does accuracy change when tube pressure is at 3000 psi vs 4500psi?

it shouldn't. how long are you waiting in between shots, I have Noticed the regulator takes a good 15-20seconds to recover and equalize to set pressure. when i first got the gun from another member here, by the time it arrived the reg pressure had creeped up to 2900psi. I shot it 3 times and it was at stock 1900. i shot and i was getting alot of erratic random pressures.. I degassed, i reset the regulator. closed it out, refilled to 4000. then slowly brought her up the manual suggested 1/4 turn.. i was at 1700ish. doing a work up i would take 5 shots all 30sec apart at a given set. work up 100psi or so, do it again. do it again.. for 10gr pellets 1800-2000 should be all you need and really not much hammer spring at all. reg pressures remained constant from that point. find the projectile that shoots the best and find the goldilocks zone for it. Then stick with it. sometimes you get lucky and get a gun that can shoot anything you give it at a given tune... sometimes you don't. this gun is not it for me, this is a specific tune piece thus far

another point.

I had greater accuracy single loading. I single load, even pesting, those magazines seem to have a decent amount of tension... the pin probe, plus the pellet having a good bit of tension might effect how it gets seated. have you paid attention to see if it is a certain position on the magazine when you have your fliers?

I haven't thought of that.
So many variables....

Will do...
Do you know of any upgrades to the guage? Digital?
Upgraded regulator?
A way to speed up pressure rebuilding behind the reg?
gauge is on point. i don't even know what the thread is, never taken it off, but there are always options.
Regulator, KIND of.. The Huma tuning reg for the avenger is weird, its an ADDITIONAL reg. It mates with the tube and replaces the tube connection to the gun. So you set the Huma Reg where you REALLY want it to shoot, and set the in gun reg to the same or above it or even all the open, doesn't matter.. I personally put Huma regs in my Dreamline, Hatsan at44, and Daystate Huntsman Revere, however its not necessary.

Can't think of any to get the stock reg to equalize faster...

if you pop this on, and you open the AV reg up to max, the huma will take the wheel and perform well, if these perform as fantastically as the other 3 HA regs I have.

I just thought of this. Because we always go to more complex things first. But. When's the last time you cleaned your barrel? During a shooting session I'll get about 75-100 slugs in and then all of a sudden I start getting random half inch off misses where I had been reliably hitting the same exact hole. Before long it'll be a 1" group. Then 1.25". Pull a few wet patches then dry. Then voila. Back to normal. .

Clean your barrel.
