The ol' shooting jacket question.

Hello All,
Im wondering into unchartered territory on a budget.
Looking for a "cheap" jacket to try out a few new classes.
Any input on these Creedmoor jackets? Im a big guy and want something that will actually fit.
Measuring at 49" snug so 50" gave a tad bit of room, thats with a tshirt.
Thanks

PS - Search only gave 2 old threads and none really addressed this specific jacket. Im not buying anything beyond this at this time. Seem some nice ones out there but if I stick with shooting a class that allows a jacket I may upgrade down the road.

any body your size at the shoots ? the only store i know of is in TN

You should be fine with the Creedmoor jacket or similar "off the shelf" jackets. Champions Choice, or Freeland Sports are other places that sell off the shelf jackets. I suggest getting something with the buckles/straps, as your picture shows - any coat labeled as "international" will use buttons instead of straps.

Are you using a sling? Some coats come with a sling hook to help keep the sling where it should be on your arm, and this is one of the key reasons to have a coat. If your coat does not have this feature, you can sew one on, or put a button on the arm as a way to keep the sling positioned on the upper arm.

I am not sure you'll see a ton of benefit from the jacket in the free position, but it should help in offhand. Consider, you will be wearing a coat in summer, and you will also want to wear something long sleeve under the coat. As you go to the more expensive coat options, materials tend to get thicker.

I'm not sure about that particular coat but some have a hard back that may or may not be removable or permitted in certain disciplines. It may not be a concern under airgun competition but there are requirements for some firearm competitions. I do have a creedmore and it is high quality and has a wide range of adjustment. I know a lot of competitors intentionally oversize their shooting coat substantially and wear a few layers to make up the difference so they have room for fluctuating weight. It gets pretty hot in those coats though!

Champions Choice $95.00. My size is out of stock, but ordered one anyway. I’m sure they are coming from out of the country. I called and the lady said she wasn’t sure if the price would be going up if I waited, but I know better with the incoming tariffs.
Thank You. $95 is better than $160 to try something! And in stock.

As shootermeb said, you want a jacket that adds stability for offhand (and kneeling) shots. Having padding in the shoulder area to dampen heartbeat is also a bonus. The cheaper coats don't offer the offhand stability that you are looking for. Only the higher dollar, stiffer and thicker jackets offer what I consider as stability improvements for offhand. They also get hot in the summer as shootermeb said. I know three guys in Texas who have tried lighter weight coats and none were happy. One bought a heavier coat and two went back to Open and Hunter class.

Creedmoor hardback and Kurt Thune FT jackets are what you see in WFTF class mostly in the US, and they work which is why you see them.

I ditched my jacket a couple seasons ago. I got to the point that it was allowing for bad form and when I had to shoot without it, my positionals were trash. While it took a few months to adjust, and with proper technique acquired my scores/avg's for positionals returned. I even ditched the heavy boots for hiking shoe's. This change allows your feet to adjust better on uneven and root or rock filled shooters boxes. I suppose I'm saying make sure you are using good form and have reached your potential before relying on a jacket to improve your game. Also, I applaud you for trying a different class, most won't.

Since you've not only gotten excellent advice from equally excellent voices of experience, but also made your decision, I'll chime in now. 🤔

1) I assume you're not in Texas.
2) Believe it or not, even a few Texans use shooting jackets.
3) But some of them are Texas transplants. At least one from Oklahoma; so "consider the source" of his advice. 😉
4) Also consider the source of this information. 🤪
5) That said, I have a very heavy Grizzly Bear coat I'd make you a good deal on. Does a good a job of controlling wiggles.
6) Correction- tremors. 🥵
7) Don't use it much since moving to Texas.
8) From Mars.
9) Yes, we have Grizzlies on Mars.
10) But ours are twice the size of Earth Griz, which Martians call Mini Griz, or Toy Griz.
11) Martian Griz are popular lap-pets.

Space Og? When, and how did that happen?

I moved to Texas about 200,000 years ago, and founded a cult called Neanderthal. That being my sexual 'peak' 😉, the cult thrived until said peak began declining about 30,000 years ago.

I still visit Mars occasionally, but don't enjoy traveling as much as I used to. Hence, nowadays I don't often stray far from (under my rock in) Bosque County.

TOO MUCH information?
