New FX Impact Compact - Newbie Question

Hi all,

I am new to the forum and new to the FX Impact (M4 Compact, in .22), but not new to airguns, shooting more generally, and hunting.

I understand the mechanics of how the Impact works and I love the ability to tune with precision. The catch is that I don’t currently have a chronograph, so (for the immediate term), some of the tuning is more of a feel than an exact science.

The gun’s preset specs, with a second-stage set at 105-110 bar and macro wheel at 16, make 18.21gr Barracuda Hunters expand perfectly in water jugs at 10 yards.

My question is this - for FX Hybrid slugs (.22, 22gr), what settings (second-stage regulator and macro wheel) do you find work for you, with the aim being full expansion at targets within 50 yards.

The internet seems to be all over the place, and I only have so many water jugs, so I figured I’d ask those far more knowledgeable than me.

Again, I realize this isn’t exact, and I’ll need to do my own experimentation. I’m just trying to get a general sense of starting settings for the FX Hybrids in an Impact M4 Compact.

Many thanks in advance.

One chronograph is worth a thousand water jugs.
Agree, this is a necessity if you want to start cranking dials on your pcp.

But to answer your question the FX Hybrids are like a medium soft alloy and will expand well even at slower speeds. I would personally try to get them going as fast as accurately possible as expansion will be more reliable at faster speeds. In a Compact you are probably looking at the 125-130Bar range to start chasing your tail in the slug game.

Many thanks, that makes sense to me. I had upped it to 120 and got a bit of deformation and ballooning of the cavity, for lack of a better description, but no real outward expansion. I’ll take it to 130 and go from there.

When you get a chronograph, hop back on this topic and I’ll point you in some directions. Give you some speeds and liners that seem to work best. Right now you’re in a dark room just bumping off walls. A chronograph is not a major purchase. You just spent over $2k on a toy. A chronograph is life blood for a FX Impact.

Fair point, and will do. I have 4 marauder variants, but I find them to be essentially one-trick ponies. I’ve figured out the pellets they each prefer, and refill after no more than 2 magazines. They are laser accurate, but the MRODs are gigantic, the PROD only has so much power, and although the Akela is accurate and many ways an MROD of usable size, the balance is off. But again, not much tinkering with them, and the ammunition choice for each is pretty self-explanatory from the beginning. A bit of experimentation, yes, but in the grand scheme of things not all that much because the power is what it is.

So yes, chronograph next, and then I’ll be back. I’ll be in touch soon.

This is soooo true! I just played around with wheels trying to tune by group size...what a waste of time/pellets/slugs/air...

Reading some of vetmx posts is what helped get me going in the right direction with my m3 compact.
