Messed up big time…help!

So after weeks of crappy weather I went to go shoot so I hooked up my scuba tank and went to fill it. Realized after the fact that I was looking at the wrong gauge! I’m an idiot! So now I have a tank that’s filled to probably around 4400psi which is way higher than the recommended pressure for the gun. I tried slowly unscrewing but it self seals so that’s a no go….and I don’t want to dry fire the air out because I’m worried it might damage components or seals.

How do I get the pressure out safely!?!?

Any help is appreciate!

Loosen the gauge..

What gun is it? It may have a degas screw. If not you could slowly un screw the gauge. When you hear air escaping stop and let it bleed down to a safe level.

What gun is it? If it has a bleed screw, unscrew it to let the pressure out. If not, you can carefully loosen the pressure gauge until it leaks out air.

Crescent wrench is safer for less scratches on the gauge.

I used this weird adjustable wrench that is technically for bolts but it worked perfect and the gauge has some sort of plastic cover so it helped with grip and avoiding scratches

Cool people helped you also think about purchasing an auto stop compressor with an easy read Guage ,unless u have 1 ,if not u can pik one up cheap on Amazon

Autostops can be sketchy...
They tend to allow folks leave them unattended. They are mechanical and can fail like anything else. Best is to just never leave any compressor run without keeping a close eye on it.
Something else about autostop... I have read that once the target pressure is reached you should bleed the compressor off before shutting it down. Not sure if I buy into that but like I said, I read it.

I stop, bleed down, run it a little with no load. It helps me thaw any condensate ice and makes sure all the reeds are basically unloaded. Just something I stumbled into that kep the machine happier...... No book references or anything like that.

If one is handy, an auto stop gauge and relay can be installed onto many compressors, as I did to my Nuong. It was only econmically practical because I got the junction block from a failed compressor.

Normally the gauge plastic cover can/should be removable. Exposing the flats to enable a good wrench, NOT pliers to be used.
If your gauge has a nonremovable cover, that would be odd.

You also could have hooked the gun back up and bled the over pressure out through the tank pressure release valve.

Not likely since there's usually a check valve involved in a gun's air reservoir.
