Daystate Black wolf: I'm not lazy, but...

I just received my Black Wolf. .177 with 18 inch barrel, walnut stock. First "brand new" PCP. Have an awesome Red Wolf HP, amongst other used (equally awesome) rifles. Test fired a few times, seems to function well, a bit loud so will put my larger 0db moderator on it. I didn't have high enough rings to allow clearance for an Athlon Heras 56...Extra-high it is. Ordered the PRS single shot loader, arriving tomorrow, not cheap. Ordered directly from PRS, not available for delivery to the US directly from Daystate apparently.

So...my question is...have any of you tested which pellet this thing may like? I have a crap ton of .177 pellets I can try but not that much time. It was tested at AoA with "Rangemaster Emperor" 15.9g @960ish fps with the power wheel set at 15. That's not a common pellet, way heavier than I'd want. I have no problem testing pellets, I kinda enjoy that part of it but I have a huge number of options compounded by a large range power wheel. What have you guys found that this rifle likes so far? Thanks, and cheers! Rick

I have set up a BW .177 that does excellent with JSB 10.3’s at 888 FPS and 13.4’s At 815 FPS barrel Did not seem picky. Barrel is actually 17”. The quietest moderator was the Weihrauch. 960 FPS is a bit fast… try turning the power wheel down to minimum and work your way up.
check out the thread on blackwolf information

Based on my experience with Daystate and their .177 17" barrel in a Red Wolf and an Alpha Wolf, I would try the following pellets as I have had extreme success out to 50 yards and more with these:
  • Benjamin Single Die 10.5gr. (great in the 880-900 range)
  • H&N Barracuda Match 10.65gr 4.50mm head size. (great in the 880-900 range)
  • Daystate 12.6gr Howler Slugs. (920-940fps works well in my Red Wolf)

Thanks! I didn't think about slugs, but I have a few I could try, but not the one mentioned. The others you mentioned I have on my short list. I was hoping it would like the JTS 10.4 or the JSB 10.3's. Cheers! I will report later after some testing.

I'll be curious if you can get down to 20 fpe easily as I read another thread where AoA needed to restrict the transfer port and some other stuff to get the power down to FT range. These new Black Wolves have a powerful balanced valve and want to shoot hot.
Yeah, the fpe with the tested pellets was 31+. I definitely don't need that kind of power since I really just want to punch paper accurately at 30 or 40 yards...

I completely get it. I like .177 because it is a mellow low power caliber. It's quiet and safe in the suburban back yard. I'm really interested to see how the Black Wolf performs. It's been about 1-2 months since release and very little posted on performance.

I'd be curious to see how the JTS do. They have performed well for me in two rifles which were very pellet picky.
