FWB FWB P8x vs. Baikal IZH 46M

So I derailed the thread about an FWB 65 with a brief discussion on other target pistols. Thought I'd give this it's own thread. I'm fascinated with the accuracy of the 10 meter pistols (and those that wield them as intended, off-hand), I recently got a great deal on an FWB P8x. Already had the Baikal. And a Crosman 1701P. All are great in my short (15 ft) garage range, wanted to try a true 10 meter test so took my two most accurate outside for a death match ;-). To my eye (too lazy to measure ctc and make it scientific) the P8x wins by a small margin. Based on engineering quality and fit, finish, and trigger, I thought the P8x would be a runaway winner but not so...Cheers! Rick

Nice shooting with both off hand @ 10 meters / 32.8084 feet.

Not off hand! Notice the small tripod in the photo, every shot was front rested. Was trying to see which was more accurate, not how much I suck at off-hand 10 meter pistol shooting, which is already well established ;-).

I think that holds true for most of us. I get most of my enjoyment shooting at reactive targets. I have 4 pieces of nylon cord of different lengths hanging on an old sawhorse, small S hooks on the end of the cord and I clip old soda cans on and make them jump.

Strictly off hand speaking, I think both pistols are quite inherently accurate. Where the Izzy falls behind is ergonomics. It is heavier and more awkward to shoot. You have to break your grip every shot to re-cock. The P8X grip is much better out of the box. I would think you would be able to shoot the P8X more consistently. Once again I’m speaking of offhand shooting.

I shoot pistols exclusively offhand with a 2 hand hold at 10M and 25 yards. I do not have a P8X but shoot a Steyr LP50 and an IZH 46M, both with red dots. I shoot the Steyr a little better than the Izzy, but not much, mostly because I shoot the Steyr more.

Need to add that the Izzy trigger is the best of all my pistols.

Shot this target with the Izzy today, first one at 25 yards. Shot a couple a little better with the Steyrs. Anyway, I don’t think it’s the pistol that’s holding me back :).

Off hand at 25 yards, that's impressive, I'll have try that sometime but I'll need a bigger target ;-)

Try using a rear rest along with the front rest next time. I think a "true" test is constrained by the shooter and the ammo and I mention that not as an insult because both those pistols should have every group touching at 10M, "if fully rested on bags".
Take it even a step further and mount RD's.

All that being said I sold my Morini 160E because there was no way I could shoot that pistol to it's full potential offhand and I didn't need two Olympic match pistols. I can't even shoot my Steyr LP5 to it's potential off hand even though it's marginally less precise at 10M, like CTC .1's for the Morini and .2's for the LP5. The LP5 is a lot more fun though on steel.

I would think that very heavy for offhand shooting. When offhand I mean one hand, bullseye style

Yes, it weighs a little over 3 # with the Udot and mount. A lighter dot would probably be manageable one handed. I shoot with 2 hands so it’s ok although the cocking lever makes placement of the weak hand a challenge.

Do you shoot the soda cans from a rest? What distance?

Well thank you but my intent was to show the accuracy at 25 yards. Many think these pistols are "only" for 10M since that is what they are most known for. My Izzy shoots the 7.33g JSB pellets at 446 fps so I was a little surprised at the results myself.

I'll bet the FWB is equally impressive especially since I've heard the trigger is one of the best!

Congrats, you have a couple of excellent Target pistols!

Mostly ten to fifteen yards, offhand or just sitting in a patio chair. About the only time I shoot a pistol from a rest is when zeroing it and then I want to hold it as stable as possible, same as with a rifle.

With a light breeze, the cans swinging a little make for a more challenging target. The way the wind has been blowing the last week, especially some days I would have to have the gun muzzle a few inches away from the can to hit them.

That sounds like a lot of fun! Reminds me of when I was a kid shooting cans down in the canyon with my Winchester pump .22

I get bored with 10M paper targets in offhand because I can only shoot so good. I mean look how amazing top Olympic shooters score and here I am trying to stay in the black bull.

Since I have a combat pistol background I prefer using both hands to hold my pistols. My friends and I have contests using weak hand and strong hand but it feels so awkward I don't do it much.

So I shoot at little steel rounds I had a guy make. Basically he cut round bars of various diameters into 1/10th inch slices then welded a base to them. I've got 10 or so of each, .6", 1", 1.5", 2" and 2.5". I lay them across the top of saw horses and shoot them off so it's very fun and gives a instant feedback experience. The best I've done in offhand was 9/10 at 20Y on the 1.5" steel and that's with a RD on top of my LP5, but most of the time it's 6-7/10 on a good day.

I also save dog food cans to shoot farther out. Shooting these at 40 yards is not easy and pellets at 5 fpe blow a lot in the wind so aiming high and holding off using a RD is also a fun challenge. It takes a second for the pellet to arrive which is interesting too.

To me that's what shooting is about, having fun. I really do not get much enjoyment out of trying to get the smallest group possible, been there and done that. A couple of years on a smallbore rifle team in college, and quite a few years punching holes in paper targets with my 30-06. About 15 years ago I got a M1 Garand, and the most fun I had with it was at my sisters place. Her house is on the side of a hill with a small valley between another couple, surrounded on 3 sides. I would throw cans down there and bounce them around with the Garand, hitting oe as soon as it stopped moving, all from a standing position, Not a great range, probably 30-40 yards but fun. I would also set up dried dirt clods and vaporize them with my litttle Marlin 39a rifle.

Longevity with or without maintenance..
That is the question.
I have had three IZH46 pistols.
I sold one and gave one to son #1.
I have one left.
It has shot in the neighborhood of 25,000 7.0 RWS pellets.
A little oil on the compression tube every 500 shots.
I store it with a pump of air (Like the Bluestreak).
I have to replace nothing but I have all the parts to do it.
We have others that shoot with me that have similar numbers without a failure.
They are tough as nails!
