What is this thing underneath the scope bottom?

All my scopes have a flag bottom. Then this new scope I order came in and it have this thing on the bottom of the scope at an angle. Not sure what it is but I used a pliers and turn it counter clockwise and it came loose. I kept turning it and there is a spring inside that pushed the whole thing out. I was like wtf lol. I tried to screw it back but the spring was so hard. You have to really push it down and twist it back. Took me awhile but I was able to screw it back. So what the hell is this thing for? Why most scope don't have it and then there is this scope that have it.

Other  Quickie Hickory highlights

Great show as usual from Tony McDaniel! And these pics are not even close to the tip of the iceberg - just a few highlights that grabbed my eye.

Let me start by kicking my own butt for NOT getting any pics of Paul Hudson's superb collection of pre-war German guns! Shooting his lovely and well-tuned second-variant Diana 58 was the highlight of my weekend.

Time machine back to about 1975: about a dozen literally NEW FWB, HW, Wischo, and Anschutz classics in their minty Air Rifle Headquarters boxes, with all paperwork and accessories. One of the most jaw-dropping things I've ever seen at a show...but all hoovered up by a well-known dealer. Enuff said on that...

A unique wonder also at Carl's table - a gorgeous Redfield Olympic sight fitted to an FWB:

Post up pictures of your smashed projectile's...

Post up pictures or videos and descriptions of your smashed or expanded projectiles. Shot into whatever medium-- gel, newspaper, water, bloody or cleaned, this is an educational picture thread so hunter's and pester's can get an idea of the performance of their pellet or slug at different distances and power levels.

HW/Weihrauch  WH30s Useful Range

I have a new WH 30s. I bought it mostly for plinking. I will do some but limited target shooing - not competition. What's the longest range this rifle is still accurate? I am aware that it is one of the lowest FPS at the muzzle of all WH Springers and I am good with that. Thanks! Oh yeah, using JSB Match Diabolo EXACT .177 cal, 7.33 grain.

Got too excited over prymaidair 20% off code.

So yall probably all saw that prymaidair is having a 20% off code for the holiday. Usually their coupon codes are 10%-15% only. I think this was the first time I've seen a 20% off code. So what did I do? I went to their site and put a bunch of jsb pellets .22 and .25 cal. I put 12 tins in the cart and total was $210.91. I enter the 20% off code and guess what happen? It didn't work. Wtf. Then I read the fine print, Benjamin and umarex products only. Lmao. Guess I won't be ordering more ammo anytime soon. Deleted all items off cart. 😞 moral of story is, don't get too excited when you see something 20% off.

Other  $100 pcp, Pellets Jamed in barrel

So, I purchased a beeman raider in .25 as I wanted a cheep .25 pcp to mess with. It was posted as leaking pcp on the online auctions for $100. Low and behold when it arrived I noticed the breech oring was on the bolt probe. A pellet fell out of the barrel and I knew that a pellet was jammed in the barrel. After making some caveman attempts to remove it I put my mind and tools to work.
First I removed all the air (this was done before the caveman work) from the pcp and disassembled it.
Than measured the depth of the pellet and found a suitable drill bit and placed it in my laithe. Drilled out the Pellets learning that it was more than one.
I grabbed a brass rod and used a die to thread one end and used my laithe to drive it into the pellet from the barrel inlet side.
I used a crescent wrench and a mallet to lightly tap the rod and pellet out like a slide hammer. Did this until there was no Pellets in the bore and ran a few patches until it was clean.
Now to go and remove Pellets from a 140 barrel. Now I have confidence to by used pellet guns that have Pellets stuck in the barrel. This is possible without a laithe however, I would not choose to do it without one.

Taipan  . 22 Taipan mutant standard

After owned a few forward cocking airguns I really never think that I would have another rear cocking airgun , but even since I sold a pair of taipan longs , I had the want to try a standard size taipan, so few weeks ago a .22 standard mutant in perfect condition for the age was in the classified, at a perfect price I buy it, and send it to Motorhead tuning service, for a complete orings change and a reg rebuild since it was already in his shop so I could have a trouble free gun.. hit set it up for 18gr at 900fps and - WHAT A GUN it is , just fill point n shoot , no poi no harmonics bulls%&<$#$=×@... just pure enjoy of the money spend.... i have to had one in .25 so i just got the .25 standard with the tactical stock before they are gone for ever .. because talon tunes have the last ones in .25 .. no 22 in any configuration aviable.. of these old models .. only Air Gun Heaven still have one or two.. for the new members looking to have a accurate trouble free gun . Get some before the only choice you have is to wait until some one want to sell his .. i sold mine ones i will not do the same mistake again.

N/A  First PCP - FX Impact M4 or Skout EVO?

I am new to the airgun world and I am looking into benchrest and then possibly PMC/PRS. I am pulling my hair out trying to decide on a proper gun. I keep going back and forth between the FX Impact M4 and the Skout Evo. Adding in more complexity is caliber..... From what I have seen looking at NAC and RMAC, .30 cal is the popular choice, but I have also seen good results with .22. I seek the wisdom and advice of those with MUCH more experience that I have to your recommendations. I am not going to be using this for hunting, just target/competition.

hBN (Hexagonal Boron Nitride) vs fouling

I’ve been shooting a lot of slugs lately and I’ve noticed that they foul up the barrel quite a bit faster than pellets.

My quest in finding a solution has led me through barrel polishing, projectile lubing, etc.

Recently I was introduced to a barrel/projectile coating product called hBN (Hexagonal Boron Nitride). Supposedly it has some of the lowest friction on the planet and it claims to fill in the microscopic imperfections.

IMG_8405.jpeg

I took the advice of thoroughly cleaning a barrel to remove all build up/fouling and any petroleum products. Then I mixed the hBN with 99% alcohol, mopped the barrel, let it sit for 20 minutes, then pulled a few dry patches through.

Holy 💩 this is some crazy slick stuff!!!

The powder claims to be 0.5 microns, 900° heat resistance, and have super high pressure resistance. There are quite a few long-range powder burners who swear by this stuff, so why not use it on Airguns?

Some say it minimizes their extreme spread, while most say it significantly reduces build up and facilitates a quick easy cleaning.

I’ll probably end up cleaning/coating my projectiles in the same solution then polish (wipe them off) with a microfiber towel. I’ll check back in a few days to share my findings. But if anyone has used this stuff please chime in.

*update - I’m being told that’s in order for the hBN to crystallize and embed properly we should shoot a few (fire-lap) hBN coated projectiles through it after the powder has dried in the bore.

Bent my Alpha Wolf barrel 🥺/ UPDATED 😁

I had my Alphe Wolf on a cleaning stand on my table, I was moving gun cases and stuff around and backed around the table and my side pushed against the barrel that was sticking off the table. It pushed it right off the stand onto the floor, I turned to watch it nose dive onto my basement floor, the floor has carpet squares with rubbet backing on it. Picked up the rifle and it looked like the barrel wad now slightly bent upward.
The next morning I took it to the range and it was shooting 11+ inches high at 25 yards and 2 inches left.
Pulled off the barrel and checked it my lathe to see how bad it was. Here is before and after videos. I'm hoping it will shoot OK again.

N/A  A question for our British members, and locals too

I have a nice English made Webley Longbow in .22. I really like how it shoulders. It’s my favorite carbine.
However the breech seems very tight. JSB HN seem too tight. Are there other pellets with smaller diameter?
there are not a lot of people who have this gun so I don’t know if this is normal.
Thoughts and suggestions are appreciated

I had a couple sparrows get lodged in the wires and dead ivy up on the power pole yesterday. This guy decided to come and clean them up and have a snack.

Why .22 and why .30

So, as I sift through video reviews for perhaps my next gun, I can't help but be intrigued by the number of reviews at .22. I'm wondering why 8 out of 10 reviews are for .22 models of just about every gun reviewed. I have been shooting .25 for years and its hard to venture out of my comfort zone...but I can be persuaded. One of our fellow members has assured me that there's no real difference in accuracy but still I see lots of .22. I understand that many shooting channels originate from South Africa, (SA), and the UK so they are tied to .22. Anyone care to enlighten me on the virtues of .22?

As a second part to this question....why go .30? I do understand the virtues of the heavier pellet bucking the wind in competition but is there something else? So any opinions with that caliber as well?

Thanks guys.

Air Venturi  Avenge x .177 suddenly shoots innacurately

Hi - sorry for my noob approach to this awesome sport. The problem is that my AvengeX is suddenly very innacurate. Sometimes it groups just fine (1,5 cm/22m) and sometimes it is all over the target plate. I havent dropped the gun or the scope. The scope is level. I use a bench rest to hold the gun. I have cleaned the barrel with a pull-cord with aerosol on. Havent oiled it after. That didnt help. The gun seems tight on all screws. The scope is a Hawke and the baffle-thing in the front fits the barrel nicely. What could be wrong? Today I shot around 80 pellets without getting it to shoot in a consistent way. Looking forward to hear from you:)
