Taipan  Baptized the new Taipan Vet 2 today

I received a new Taipan .22 Long ADF with 700mm barrel last week. Mounted a new DNT Optics FFP 7 X 35 X 56mm 34mm scope on this rifle. It is strictly for the bench and although I did not weigh it I think it is a little over 12lbs with the 42oz 34mm scope.

I plan to use it for 30 and 40Y Target Challenge and also N50 50Y targets.

Today, I shot it at 52 yards at my local outdoor range. Got there at 8:40am, and had the range to myself …..for all of 15 minutes. Saturdays are crowded typically, but I had about an hour with only me and one other shooter.

I met a nice young man named Andrew who was 26 years old ( I’m 71) and he had a huge interest in Air Guns and my new Taipan. He has an M4 Impact and seemed to be very familiar with air rifles. I meet some of the nicest people at the range.

Distance: 52 yards
Group shooting and testing with pellets
Ammo: JSB 20.83g Lights and JTS 22.07g
Scope - see above
Wind: 3-7mph, with a fairly steady 4-5 mph
No Flags today since I started with group shooting
SST only, no mags today

A couple of initial impressions:

Front cocking lever is sublime and much better than my original rear cocking .25 Long Vet 1. A very crisp cocking cycle. One odd thing is that sometimes it did not cock. But, I figured out that if I pulled trigger thru release after firing each shot, it went back to cocking fully every time.

Trigger - about 6-8/10oz as I requested from Tony. Perfect for me. Crisp 1st stage stop with buttery smooth 2nd stage release

The Taipan moderator is very good, but when I took my muffs off, it did have a louder hammer strike. NP for me, as this is a BR gun.

Accuracy - 1st outing but it is impressive at 52Y with a fair amount of wind. The 22.07g JTS did much better than the 20.83 lights. However, I know the lights shoot very well from Dillon’s recent review. Tony tested with AEA 21.9g at 30 y, ragged hole and a 10 shot string <10 ES at 910 FPS average.

I plan to use this thread to do some testing with other pellets and occasionally will post results for other interested parties.

I did like the original Taipan Long Vet 1 .25 that I purchased several years back, but since it was rear cocking and I am a lefty, it was awkward reaching back over my shoulder to cock it on the left side of rifle, for me anyway. .

PCP Rifle  WTS Reduced--Brand New Brocock Atomic .25 Package $1000

Purchased this "We The Plinkers" Atomic package from AoA as a gift for a family member that wanted nothing to do with it when opened. Oops! I don't need another .25 cal rifle so here it is for sale. It's never been loaded or fired a pellet since its arrival from Arizona. I did dry fire a few times to make sure it's functioning normally. Holding air just fine. Comes with all the accessories it shipped with and pictured except the T-shirt and patch that comes with the package.

Also shown is the Savior 28" Classic Bag in green that is also unused and still in the wrapper. Items will ship in the packaging in which they were delivered to my house as shown in the pictures.

Here's the package at its current price of $1599:

I'm asking $1000 for the rifle combo (remember that includes attached 0db mod + Athlon scope) , $70 for the case or $1050 for both. I'll cover shipping using Pirate Ship.

I can take PP F&F, Venmo, and Zelle. I'll only sell in CONUS.

Thanks for looking!

Greg

A little shooting today

Slinging the little 13 grain Zans 100 yards in the not low wind, well you have to work for what you get, but it is a whole lot better than 13 gr pellets CUZ i tried that a bit later.

First segment in my video on the orange top, my friend shooting his M30.
Bottom 2 rows me shooting my Two.
After resetting ( targets came off fridge ) on the way back i show our new needle target, that little hole at 75 M aint easy, at least not with the merciless wind we had lately.
'Also new targets Zip ties on a pole, you can shoot off the end 2-3-4 times before you go for the tie around the pole to clean it, at 75 M also not easy.

Second segment is the targets all shot up, my friend filled in the top line of 2" targets with this DRS

The bottom rows are all me with the Two.

FAIR WARNING : Wind noise.

Airgun Technologies  Vulcan vs Vulcan 2

Hi Friends. I was pricing out a Vulcan 2 and found a used Vulcan online for $895. Since that was only a little more than half the cost of a Vulcan 2, I tried googling what is different between them, and found absolutely zero references to the first generation Vulcan. Lots of posts/vids about the Vulcan 2 and vulcan 3, but none about the original Vulcan. Can any one of you fill me in? In your opinion, is the V2 worth the extra money?

Thanks in advance!

Other  The IZH46M Achilles Heel

We all know about the cheap pot metal cocking shoe AA uses with the TX200 and ProSport.
We also know about the cheap screws used in the IZH46M grips.
What we did not know was the other cheap, pot metal parts used in the 46M.
Part #51.
The cocking linkage that retracts and compresses the piston into the chamber.
Last night at the Diablo Indoor 10M match in Bay Point, CA, I was starting my pre-match practice and, after firing three pellets, I noticed the cocking handle hanging freely from the pistol.
I tried to close it but couldn’t because the linkage was broken and was jammed into the slot where it normally resides.
I do not know if pot metal can be welded or not. (I will check with the Motörhead.)
A fellow shooter who is knowledgeable about metallurgy said it was poorly made at the factory.
I am sure I cannot get a replacement part.
If it cannot be fixed, I will be selling the grips, trigger, and several o-ring/gasket kits…

Accessories  SOLD Hill Pump MK5 Pro Never used

**** Sold****

Up for sale is a Hill MK5 Pump that I purchased to go on a trip to hunt some iguanas and I wanted to be prepared in case I couldn’t fill my tank. I never got to use it since someone brought a compressor with him. I did open one of the dry packs and installed it but never got to use the pump. I did install a long quick disconnect fitting to the hose as you can see in the picture. So it’s basically a new/ open box item that has no wear at all. It was purchased from AoA a few months ago for 220.00 and really don’t need it since I have 4 compressors.

Asking 140.00 shipped to Continental USA. PayPal F&F, Venmo or Zelle as usual.

Please call or Text for immediate response. I don’t check my PM very often. My phone is by my side 24/7 and I can respond to that right away.

Scopes

I'm doing some research on what brand and size scope I need to upgrade too. I know I want FFP scope. The problem I'm seeing is most of the target/long range scopes have all those lines and hash marks and looks like that would all run together with my 50 year old eyes. My question is there a target/ long range scope that that has the hash marks on the crosshairs but not all the other stuff.
Thanks

Taipan  The Saharan Mutant

So I have been a fan of tan guns for many years. In fact my first PCP, my .22 Synrod I painted the stock tan way back when. Have always wanted to do it again but never have. Many many airguns through my hands and never did get another tan one. One I have always liked the looks of since I first saw it is the BRK Sahara XR. Tan stock with a tan shroud just looked really good to me. However having owned a Bantam before it just never really fit me well and wasn't a fan of the trigger. So never did try one.

Decided now was the time to do it myself. Thought about my Taipan Long but with the laminate stock I'm not sure I can paint over it. But when the little Mutant came into my hands I knew it was the perfect gun to do. I got a can of Rustoleum Camo paint in Khaki for the color. Took some coarse grit sand paper to the stock and fine grit to the shroud. After cleaning them up went to spraying. I got a good 10+ coats on both the shroud and stock. It turned out really well and will see how it is Sunday morning once it's fully dry. And yes i did do the butt pad but will be cleaning the paint off it. Was out of painters tape.

Im happy with this

10 shots at 50yds. I'm happy with the tune. I was shooting for group. Now to get it zeroed. I'm using a Vortex 3-9x40 and can tell that I need more scope. My 50 year old eyes were struggling. So I guess I'll start doing some research on scopes. I have to say it's nice to come home and be able to shoot every afternoon. Whish I would have bought a pcp yrs ago. Thanks for all the info shared with me on my pcp quest.

Paul Porch targets arrived today and boy are they are cool!

Just now opened a box from Paul Porch of Paul’s Custom Targets and all I can is WOW!

The three different styles of targets were oh so carefully boxed in expanded foam and foam peanuts. Why is this important you might ask? The face plates are painstakingly painted (Look at the detail!) and no one wants to have them scratched up before getting to show them off to their shooting buddies.

The three targets I received one is a traditional AAFTA style target painted hoot owl made from a very heavy gage steel. This ain’t your run of the mill Gamo rat on the run target! I put it on my scales and at four pounds, that’s about another full pound of steel.

Something I noticed right away is, there are no bolts or pop rivets protruding from the front. It’s all TIG welded. Also, this particular target has the lever arm for the reset line off to the side and about four inches in length. You won’t throw your shoulder out resetting this baby.

IMG_3297.jpeg

Next target I took out of the box is his NEW self resetting with a squirrel faceplate. The faceplate is a smaller version of his traditional squirrel FT targets but it doesn’t need to be big. Out of the box it’s ready to shoot for guns producing 14-25 FPE and are adjustable with a wrench if you feel the need. They will work on 12 FPE but is distance dependent. If you’re shooting WFTF, just be sure to ask for the 12FPE model at no extra charge.

This little guy is so cute I’m going to regret shooting him for sure.

IMG_3296.jpeg

And last but not least, his new “Post” spinner. The beauty of this compact little flower is, you can attach it to a fence post or tree (or other suitable type of mounting surface) and get it off the ground out of the grass. You can mount it horizontal or vertical to suit your shooting needs. And it’s small enough you could mount several around your shooting range with a couple of drywall screws and practice different size KZ’s at different distances and not have to get up and move a target device.

Skout  Skout EVO precision with slugs

About three weeks ago I did some trading plus funds out of state for this Skout EVO. I got it home a few days later, aired it up, shot about 40 shots, and the gun seemed to shoot well, then I went to fill it again and the air started leaking out. Darn... Turned out the HPR was where it was leaking.

I called Skout and reg parts were sent out the next day which I received four days later. I installed them and the same leak persisted. I called again, said what had happened, and requested a whole HP Reg assembly be sent, however I was overlooked because no parts showed up. When I called 6 days later they apologized when they realized the parts hadn't been sent. Miffed I asked for 2nd day shipping which they did for me. I installed the HP reg assembly which held up after a 4000 psi fill but there was a leak where the bottle gauge screwed into it's housing. I tightened it and that leak was stopped.

Finally I could get going!
I want to use this EVO in a match called the FullMonty/FM, a new UFT match format here in AZ, that is 72 shots on heavy duty steel FT targets, consisting of 2 shots at closer targets, 2 shots at mid range, and two at the longer distances, for 12 lanes, from 11y to 100Y.

Why I chose the EVO?? It's because it meets some personal requirements.
#1 It's a heavy gun which helps it to be steadier off of the bucket and sticks like people use in HFT and the way this match is prescribed to be shot.
#2 It has high cap mags which means fast follow up shots within a time limit of 4 minutes of 6 shots, and since I can have loaded 30 shot mags ready to go before the match starts it's something I won't need to think about during the match. BTW these mags are awesome!
#3 I like cocking from the left side even though I am a right handed shooter so I was able to switch it to the left side.
#4 It's also a smooth cocking gun with very minimal cocking resisitance which I do enjoy having.
#5 Is it's available with a faster twist 22 cal LW barrel/15.75 per inch - mine being the 600mm, which works well with my choice of slugs, those being the Altaros 40gr Kings and their 32.2gr Smooths, since I plan on competing in the slug division, and that I don't much care for using pellets for long range.
and I wanted 22 cal because some of the KZ holes are 3/8ths inch and that the 25cal or 30 cal projectiles don't give much room for error.

Some other aspects I found out when I got to shooting it.
With the skeletonized butt the LOP is a bit shorter which suits me better.
The ARCA rail is great and goes back far enough to balance on my tripod perfectly and it has MLOK rails so I can mount a pic rail on for my bipods.
The Ergos and balance also feel good to me, superior to some rifles I've owned before.
This trigger can be adjusted low and it's very good for an E-trigger. Mine is set at 2oz, and it came that way which is odd but I left it there.
The firing impulse is nice but likely half the reason is the weight of the gun and scope.
I'm not sure on the shot count yet but I should only need to fill once during the match.
And the tunability on this gun is something even I can do, LOL! I've already got it set to 828 fps with 32.3gr which is 49 fpe, which is just below the max FPE of 50 fpe for the FM. I'll explore a bit more on tuning the HPR, the LPR, the Dwell, and indexing the barrel. After all I've just started having less than 80 rounds down range at this point.

At 25Y, which is my zero, it puts most holes touching with both weights of Altaros slugs. But check this out, that's twenty-ish 32.3gr slugs, half at 82Y, and half at 99Y, in near as I can figure 12-16 mph full value winds today. I held off anywhere from .4 mil to .7 mil and this KZ is a 3" circle.
I'm not displeased with the precision capability so far.

I'll update how it all goes....

The tripod is a Fat Boy which I used for todays try.
The scope is a Meopta Optika 6 5-30x56.
Rings are ARC.
And I dug out my old Avet fishing reet with 80 pound line to reset the target.

Brocock/BRK  Out with the old, in with the new

IMG_6417.jpeg

.25 Ghost HP, Hawke Sidewinder 4-16 FFP MOA with medium rings.

The riser can be removed and the cheek piece slid directly on the rail, I used M5x5mm .80 pitch grub screws. Just got it setup, reg set to 140b now, it came from AoA with 165b reg, 33.95gr @ 950 fps. Shooting for 910-915 fps with Mk2 33.95. All I need now is time to actually shoot…

Other  My HW97, from basic to Bombastic

Got my first HW97 KT in the Blackline configuration but I was not happy with the hollow sound of the synthetic stock. I filled the buttstock, and it was better but still I wanted something different.

174 Weihrauch HW97KT synthetic .22.JPG

I got a second 97KT, this time with a wood stock, NICE! Wanted to add something of my own so I carved my own pistol grip cap and added a white line spacer. I did a lube tune, debur and polish, brass set back trigger, brass screw kit, trigger guard, safety button and cocking handle along the way. Did well with it and won a few local FT matches.

171 Weihrauch HW97 KT.JPG

A bit later on I swapped out the 26mm piston for a 25 and added a Vortek kit... MUCH NICER! I then decided to replace the grip cap with my own rosewood and brass one.

171.JPG

Wanting yet another change I decided to put the 97 action into a laminate LP stock, added a scope riser and made another grip cap.

173 97KT LP stock.JPG

Bored about a week or so ago I decided to refinish the action, carbon fiber wrapped the scope and painted the sidewheel. Earlier in the year I swapped out the somewhat tired Vortek kit and replaced it with a Macarri spring, buttoned the piston and sliding breech and made my own guides. Here's the latest evolution of my 97.
