RTI Prophet Performance POI consistency?

For those of you with an original Performance or Performance Compact, how's the POI consistency? I've read about early versions having reg creep issues after sitting for a bit.

I'm shopping for my next rifle and reliable POI is a priority. I'm leaning towards a Taipan Veteran Long since I know how reliable they typically are, but am also interested in a Prophet Performance since I know they shoot MRD's well. I prefer the easy tuning adjustment of the RTI, but could make due with only hammer spring tuning on the Taipan.

Main use of this rifle will be pesting around the house which is why I want reliable POI once dialed in. But I also do a ton of paper punching in between. Will be sticking with 22 caliber.

Is my mind right on compressors

I know everyone is probably tired of "which compressor do I need" but please bear with me once more time and help see if I have this right in my mind.

I am new to PCP and have no readily available businesses near me willing or able to charge a tank to 4500psi so that leaves me looking for an air source of my own. I want to top off 74cuft tanks from 3000 to 4500 and fill a gun tank if needed. since tanks is in picture portability would be nice but not required. Even at my preferred range I have access to electricity. PRIMARY desire is something reliable and with readily available support/parts for when something does break.

So with that said and days of scouring the web/forum for info I have 4 pools of equipment.

1) Cheap budget system <500.00 (Yong Heng types)
Mostly Chinese
Labor intensive (water buckets etc)
crapshoot on reliability
Not bottle recommended but can be used in that role if accept risks.
2) low priced 500.00 to 1000.00 (GX Air Venturi etc)
Basically the same as cheap systems but a couple more bells or whistles.
Not much more on reliability
Generally re branded Chinese stuff
3) Mid priced 1000.00 to 2000.00 (Omega, etc)
Feature rich with auto shutoffs, auto drains, etc
Upgraded Chinese
integrated cooling and water/oil separator
Limited support/parts (in case of omega a one man show)
Reliability all over the map
4) Commercial (Coltri Alkin) 2500.00 and up
Hits all the desires
Low end of professional series so bells and whistles dropped off.

So with that laid out I am seeing I am going to have to find something in #4 like Coltri MCH-6 to be satisfied. Am I missing something? Did I too harshly judge #1 thru #3? Do I need to quit stressing and bite the bullet for the coltri?

Thanks for any nudge, correction you are willing to provide.

Steven

AGT URAGAN 2 .... what learned these past days

Customers gun, a COMPACT in .177 caliber.

MASSIVE Air Hog !!! Horrible efficiency even tho it came set up to shoot JSB 8.4 @ 900 fps it sucks down the air at 40+ psi per shot.
Under the hood of cosmetic covers a very unique design being somewhat along FX maverick design lines. That being a forward trigger group & cocking mechanics & bottle mount, a BIG plenum screwing into both forward trigger and rear valving / hammer assembly. Barrel straddled over the top anchored securely to both.

Being this gun came to me with a BIG complaint of Low shot count and somewhat noisy for the power output ... We head INSIDE and take a look around
Before going in had already figured I would be finding similar traits to other CZ manufactured pups/rifles where multi caliber choices are offered. ( Krickets, Taipans etc .. )
Yup 1 chassis and set of guts for all calibers it appears is the case here too. Barrel caliber / length & Bottle size with related parts appear to be the differences.

* Transfer path from valve to barrel a massive .230"
* Plenum is huge and all passages within moving air from bottle to valve is unrestricted !
* Super small & light hammer, short and fairly light spring ... HUH, somethings suspect ?
* Balanced valve !!! Following JSAR developed architecture ( see posted pic )

After tearing the action apart to a degree we can address specific areas came up with a few ideas ... Try them, went back in, tried some other stuff being in & out near a dozen times.

Sadly the balanced valve as built has No Lift limiting or Buffer adjustments etc ... It cracks open and fly's WIDE OPEN !! Thus why such an air hog !!

After hours of trial & error .. or not getting results wanted 😬 Figured the R&D of working with and for the JSAR team years ago during this type valves development that applying some CRUTCH fixes used back then was needed here in this guns configuration to get the valve less thirsty. for this .177 caliber application.

Placing a balance chamber rod within spring and varying its length we could mechanically limit the poppets lift to a place where valve is breathing wide open ( poppet above seat being near equal in area ) but no more !!! This also reduces chamber volume and poppet will close faster too.
Shrinking down the transfer path size from the massive .230" down to @ .140" along with other set up tricks rounded it out.

As is typical of this type balanced valve there SUPER sensitive to pressure and final speed adjusting done via reg set point. With such a large plenum here the ES is very small and seeing 3-5 fps spreads ... really solid.

All said the muzzle report is a SNAP without the LDC even mounted, screwed on it's near silent. BUT 😈 Now .... O'my gawd the PING is so obvious coming from that large thin wall plenum !!! upon shooting it's loud right against your ear & really annoying. Another day for that one, if I address it as all ?
The air use is indeed greatly reduced now, but no data collected thus far ..

Thanks for following along ...

Fx impact M3 700mm Blast of air to the face

Hello all. So I have finally decided that I want a high end air rifle, so I purchased a brand new fx impact m3 700mm .22 from pyramid air. Wow this thing is awesome. So I started shooting it and it shoots great. I have about 200 pellets through it or there about. I have noticed that all of a sudden I'm getting what I can only describe as a blast of air on my cheek when shooting it and seems much louder than when I first shot it. I have not taken anything apart except for lowering the first regulator pressure as it was around 165bar when I first received it. It is currently around 135bar and 95 bar for the second regulator (have not touched that one). Seems that they shot it for the 10 shots for $10 using 11.9 gr pellets at 1090 fps average for the 10 shots. This thing is awesome to shoot but i don't enjoy the blast of air that kind of stings. Any advice? Should I contact them and send it in? I have only had it for about 5 days including today. I looked in the barrel where the pellet probe goes into and the (breech seal?) seems to still be there.

Huge Diff. In Wind between .22 MRD 25.4’s and FX Hybrid Slugs

I Have to believe that I didn‘t have my .22 MRD’s going Fast Enough this past weekend… Wind was really pronounced 15 mph, variable and gusty. A very Bad day for hoping to achieve any consistency with an air rifle.

Tried shooting 1st time at 100 yds anyways with new Crown Mk II / 600mm rifle. Reg was at 135 Bar., TX Port Large and Hammer at 18-19 (after setting cam for max travel) was slinging the MRD’s at 910 fps. Dial on 23 was only into 930ish. Rifle was Also shooting the FX Hybrid 22gr Slugs at the Same Velocity per dial as the MRD’s. I was able to select Trans. Port in Medium and dial down to 5-6 for about 900 fps for Exact Hvy 18.1’s.

Results were that the 18.1 Exacts held about 3-4 Inches on a little steel plate at 100y. I was figuring that the MRD pellet was going to blow the little ones way…but No Way. Those redesigns going 905-910 fps were a Disaster in the winds. Terrible 5-6 Inch grouping with even some Missed Shots!! Just awfully Bad.

Real Display of just How Good & Impressive the Ballistic Coefficient of those FX Hybrid Slugs in 22 gr. came when trying them on a whim at the Same 905-910 fps at same steel disc at 100 yds. My God did they fly well in those bad, shifty Winds! Of 5 shot in one string 4 of them all piled into about 1 Inch and the 5th was only another 1/2 - 3/4 away.

I have literally Not even shot 400 pellets or 30 slugs through this gun yet and I am just loving the intimate association with building and observing its accuracy and behaviors with different Ammo and Velocities. This has got to be the Ultimate rig for gun loving fiddler types (if you don’t want the chassis configuration of the other “super-gun” they make.)

I think will go up to 145 on Reg. and try to get to 950-960 with those MRD’s in the 600mm Superior Pellet Liner. I won’t be chasing them beyond that I dont think.

Again, though, just Flabbergasted at how Straight those FX Hybrids flew down that blustery 100 yd range with all the bushes around swaying and bending to arrive at a 1” cluster of 4 hits. Impressive. Bet I would have had a difficult time trying to do that with a bolt action .22 shooting some hi-grade Eley…

Any helpful input in the MRD .22’s in 25.4 grain encouraged. (Or other comments in general of course.)

Xtreme Field Target Marksman Division

As commented elsewhere, Ben Spencer (Match Director for XFT @ Phoenix Rod and Gun Club) has been working on this for a VERY long time.

I'll start with a real-world example from the matches here in AZ, as an intro into what I've seen happen more than once.
This is a mostly true story about a new field target shooter. We'll call him Les (not his real name). Les found out about the existence of an airgun specialty shop in Gilbert, AZ called Airguns of Arizona. Perhaps he drove by it one day, or maybe found it online. Either way, he found himself in the store. He wasn't even sure of his intended use, but the next thing he knew he was walking out with a spanking new Benjamin Akela in .22, with a new 4-12x scope mounted up top. For ammo he had a couple tins of wadcutters, and was glad to get them too, with all the supply chain issues! Not long after purchasing the Akela he stumbled across information online about the summer-time field target matches held up in the tall cool pines just south of Flagstaff. The light turned on, "I could compete in field target with my Akela!" So, the next Saturday morning he finds himself at a field target match. He loved the experience, and the hook was firmly set.

From there, most of you can guess where that ended up. If you've shot field target for any length of time you're aware of the "arms race," that eventually engulfs all ft shooters. Les found that he loves field target, and has since spent a bundle on electronic guns, and high magnification scopes, and high BC pellets and on and on and on. The sad part is that for every Les, there's probably 3-5 other guys that enjoyed their first exposure to field target just as much, but couldn't ever see themselves throwing so much money at the "sport." And thus, those guys never returned.

The funny thing is that nearly all ft shooters were once Les. The majority of those of us that are still involved have played the arms race, often as fast and loose as our wives would let us get away with. And (I feel) that's mostly because there simply isn't anywhere in field target to actually be competitive WITHOUT playing the arms race.

Being realistic about the reality of the above situation is what got Ben thinking about creating a division where that arms race is quite literally against the rules. A place where folks can compete with a gun that doesn't cost over a grand (and even up to $4500 on the far end of the spectrum!!!). A place where you don't need a $1000 telescope on the top of your gun, with a wholly comical dinner-plate sized wheel (that's another $120+ for the wheel, mind you) strapped to the side of the scope. It's not unheard of for a guy to be carrying $10,000+ worth of gear from lane to lane at a field target match! And that's not an exaggeration because we've got more than one guy campaigning such a rig at our AZ matches.

And so was born, The Marksman Division of Extreme Field Target.
Simple rules, with a heavy emphasis on supreme inclusion:
  • $800 maximum MSRP for rifle
    • Must be mechanically 100% "stock", ie no aftermarket internals (for example, no re-barrelling)
    • Barrel and trigger components can be polished, but no parts can be replaced with parts that didn't come in the gun
    • External creativity allowed, within reason (Ben specifically gave the example of adding a barrel band)
      • "within reason of course"
  • $500 maximum MSRP for scope
  • 25x maximum scope magnification
The Marksman Division will shoot at the same targets, from the same position as all other XFT classes (bucket/stool and shooting sticks/bipod).
Marksman shooters can choose pellets or slugs, but either must be commercially produced and available for sale, just like other XFT classes.

The beauty of this new class is that it allows shooter skill to be on full display. While Marksman shooters will only be officially competing against Marksman Division shooters, it'll be pretty sweet for them to get a higher score than the guy shooting the $10,000+ rig, talk about bragging rights!!!! And that's fully possible in XFT, since all the distances are posted, the crazy expensive scope isn't necessary to range find by focus, such a big part of "regular" sub 20fpe field target.

Medals will awarded as they are for the other classes of XFT. You must beat someone to get a medal. ie, if two people are shooting Marksman, the high score will get a medal. If three people are shooting Marskman, the first two will get a medal. If more than 3 shooters are Marksman, the first 3 will be awarded medals.

Ben has also been in contact with many of the manufacturers I'll list off in the next few comments for potential sponsorship of the Marksman Division through prize money. Assuming some manufacturers or retailers want in on that, prize money will be awarded in the same fashion as the medals.

This is the place for: Crosman/Benjamin, Umarex, Kral, Air Venturi, AEA, Hatsan, JTS, Seneca, Hammerli, Reximex, Snowpeak, Gamo, Xisico, DAR, etc, etc etc, to compete.

I kinda want to get in on the Marksman Division action myself.....I'm thinking an Air Force Talon in .22 (MSRP of $799.99 so JUUUUSSTT barely legal), with one of my ole trusty SWFA fixed power scopes would fit into the rules....or maybe a JTS or a DAR.....

What gun and scope would you choose?

Feel free to discuss at will, Ben said he'd love to hear what people think of this concept. Suggestions, ideas, etc.

First time Marksman Division will be offered is the upcoming November 19th night match.

Just venting....

Was at the coffee pot after service yesterday, a guy was saying he lives on 3.5 acres, has a horrible gopher/ground squirrel problem, I being the Good Samaritan that I'm offered to decrease the populations for him, totally free of charge. He mentioned that the neighbors don't like shooting, I said I use a nice quiet airgun, they'll never know. It was like I'd threatened him or something, must be some anti-gun nut, imagine that in Calif. Ok well, thanks I feel better now.

Looking to add to my airgun collection

I want to thank all those on AGN that take their time to help others, I have learned a lot lurking on here. I have many powder burners but REALLY enjoy my time with airguns, so does my wife.
Currently have:
Benjamin B1500BTM in .177. Too heavy for my wife and she has trouble cocking it. Probably going to a Grandson
Gamo Swarm Maxxim G2 in .22. Wife pests with this and many hundreds of squirrels have met their demise with it.
FX M3 shooting .22 slugs. I love this gun!
Half dozen older Benjamin, Winchester, Walther and BSA pistols.

I'm looking to add a few more guns, mainly for plinking and target shooting to maybe 50 yards. My wife loves shooting at 10 to 50 yards with a powder .22 pistol or rifle at those ranges, shooting KYLs, golf balls and anything else she gets her hands on.

So I would like to end up with a variety of guns. could be pistol or rifle. Has to be accurate and reliable. Interesting guns are always better. Like 22 cal but not married to the idea. Like PCPs and have a compressor so unlimited air supply, again not married to the idea. Cost could be anything but expensive guns will take much longer to work into the budget.

Would like to get a better idea of what members shoot that they enjoy and why.

I would love to find something through AoA as they are as close to local as I'll find and we are planning a trip down to see them in a few weeks. If they don't have what we decide on for the first one, maybe the second.

Over time I can definitely see the numbers increasing even if some of the powder burners have to be sacrificed to the cause.
