Playing with the PRod

Started trying to quieten the little booger down. Seemed like it was blowing a lot of air out of the end of it. So i went to backing things up, i got to 4 turns cw from 0 on the HST, and 3 turns on the throw, found this to be an acceptable noise level.. chrony says its running 650’ish. Im shooting the cheap crosman 14.3hp’s . Primary use will be punchin paper at 30y. Hopefully 650 will be fast enough to get them to group decent… i know faster is better, but im trying to be quiet, and short. May use this for rats / mice, inside barns or out buildings. Will put it on paper in the morning.

  • Question
Sheridan 2260MB. Power mod ideas?

Love shooting my Sheridan 2260MB. It's my favorite backyard gun. Any advice on getting a bit more power out of it for small pest control? Or is it asking too much from the gun. Not wanting to need more than one well-placed shot to take down small pests tearing up mama's garden. Nosy and picky neighbors, so I don't think a break barrel would be quiet enough. I have a suppressor on it and it's nice and quiet. Just looking for a bit more power. Any advice would be appreciated.

First kill

So yesterday morning after I got off working a 12hr shift I decided to go try to check out and scout out a WMA. I already had my flash in the car, so when I got there I started down the logging road. I kept going between lol looking up to the trees and looking at the ground, I did see plenty of signs that were perfect so if stop for a spell. Finally started making my way up from the valley up to the ridge. I really enjoyed the walk and was starting the get ready to turn around whenever I saw one coming down a tree, I glassed it up and lost it but found still hear the leaves rustling, then it came out about 25y ahead of me on the path. Glasses it again took the safety off it has it's back to me, I assumed just below the skull, suddenly it moved and put it's side to me. I pulled the trigger and sent a .25 Hades down at about 750fps and 34fpe, cought it just below its jaw exit wound was right out the jaw. Now I have never hunted anything in my life till now, because of that I wasn't planning on getting anything but I brought my cooler anyways. She's not very big and ended up having a wolf larva to, but none the less I'm kinda proud of it.

New Cricket Tactical 60 .25

Ok I got my new CRICKET! Love it. My only issue is I want a good set of adjustable rings. The ones I had in the drawer are fine but.... I'm torn between the FX ones or Eagle Vision. I should not have waited so long to pull the trigger on this gun. Lol no pun intended. I need to keep coming off the stock and groping for the lever on the back of the gun. Hard to change habits. My other fave is a Cricket original. Now I know there are many great guns available, and I was torn between this and a Vulcan 3. I'm pleased with my new baby. Can't wait to stretch out the range a bit.

Tuning  How much power from a .30 RAW HM1000x?

My RAW HM1000x is tuned for accuracy at 70fpe for 44.75 pellets.

I tested some slugs and the velocity was understandably low, maybe too low for a valid test of slugs.

If I use the external hammer spring adjustment, can I generate more power? Don’t care about wasting air for this test. Any idea of how many turns is reasonable would be helpful.

Also if I mark the adjuster location and put it back where it was, will I get back to my original tune?

Thanks,

David

Veyron 4-16 or westhunter 4-16. Which would you buy?

I’m the market for a compact scope for my dreamline. Don’t want to spend a ton. I’ve owned the discovery version of this scope, and liked it, but at low power the reticle was very thin. I’ve heard the same about these 2 also. With IR I figure I can use that at low power to help the reticle pop.
That being said, which one would you buy?
The veyron has been tested and proven by many, but the westhunter looks to have a better warranty. It looks to be very similar otherwise.

Princess, Pecans, and the Gray

I recently spoke with a neighbor about his pecan harvest this year; the trees look like they will bear pretty good and I want some pecans. I was told they will if the squirrels don’t eat them all. Well you all know how this goes.

I made my way to the property a little late around 8:30am and as I start heading towards a couple of pecan trees I happen to flush squirrels from a larger tree that I wasn’t aware of.

They saw me (I moved pretty silently) and started taking off into the woods through the trees.. No distress calls, just high-tailed acrobatics. There were at least four that I saw. First I tried to catch them after jumping to take a shot, but there were too many branches in the way. I noticed that once they hit the woods they sat still in the tree tops. When I realized what they were doing I slipped into the woods behind them via a sandy cattle trail. Once I got in there I took one step too many then *CRUNNNCH!!* I stepped on a big dry leaf just before taking a knee to better line-up my sights on one and they were off to the races! This time I was on them, trotting through the woods dodging saplings, vines, and fallen branches. This seems to be the only time of year I can get away with running after them. It sounds careless, but I have loosely developed a strategy here. So I’m tracking this guy and when he paused I shot, *PING* and a miss!! He paused, I rack another pellet, and he takes off again. But this time Captain Obvious makes a fatal mistake. He decides to start barking. Great for me because I was having a helluva time tracking him running and jumping from tree to tree. And if you’ve read my squirrel hunting threads before then you know that sentries catch lead. I stayed on him.

Finally he jumped the bough from one young oak to another. I let off another shot (offhand) when I caught him on a horizontal branch running and led with my reticle. *PING* annnnnd *SHMACK* I connected just after he’d jumped branches, but I hit him in the hind leg (upon cleaning the carcass that pellet shattered his knee and it was floppy, but I didn’t see a pass through hole. I don’t know where it is. It may be in the meat still). He was trying to climb into a crotch, but his inability to climb fast allowed me just enough time to brace against a tree trunk and send a follow up shot. I steadied myself and lined up my reticle for the ear and *💥THAWCK!!!💥* I delivered the headshot. It was lights out from there. He did the hang-on-by-a-toe thing, let go after several seconds of swinging, and tumbled through the branches to the forest floor. I tied him up here to see if I could go back and get more from the pecan tree area then the livestock started to come in, but first in comes Princess and her parents.

Princess is last year’s colt and she had other ideas. I was kneeling in the dirt not far off the trail coming out of the woods southwest of the pecan tree. And she had other ideas about how this was going to go. As long as I remained still while kneeling she would look at me and eventually approach to sniff me. Then she started to tug at my shirt sleeve with her lips. I guess the Real Tree camo pattern I wore looked real enough to a horse to try to eat. When I didn’t react, I saw her lift her head and show her teeth. Next I saw some teeth coming towards my arm so moved my left hand off the forestock, over the breech, and wiggled my fingers on her nose. So Princess thought she might try these plump wiggling branches and tried to put them in her mouth. Now mom and dad saw this and thought Princess was being fed. Horse being horses, they didn’t want to miss out. By this time I went motionless again. And with her parent’s investigating things they soon realized there was no food and began picking grass around me. Princess kinda left me alone for a few minutes preoccupied with mom and dad’s picking.

After 4-7 minutes pass I finally saw a squirrel emerging from an adjacent cedar tree. I raised my rifle to track it with my scope and here comes Princess from behind. This time she’s sniffing my head and breathing down my neck! I tried to maintain my composure, but then she starts trying to bite my hat. I couldn’t contain my laughter. She just about took it off my head. I wasn’t trying to photograph this but I didn’t think many folks unfamiliar with livestock would believe this. Needless to say the squirrel saw the cows hesitating to come out of the woods on their trail because I was partially blocking it and I strongly suspect that the squirrel saw some of my movement and laughter. Being an intelligent rodent it ducked back into the vines between the cedar tree and an adjacent oak. I lost that one.

I did manage to grab the one but I was enjoying Princess’s curiosity and it kind of changed the mood and feel around the pecan trees. I’ve observed that squirrels take cues from livestock, deer, crows and other animals. They aren’t dumb and they knew I was still there. Also the young bull pictured I’ve known his entire life. He inches his way down the trail, but some of the heifers hesitated. Some of the older cattle remember me from past seasons, but this year I tied up Captain Obvious amd hung him right on a tree along side their trail and many sniffed and prodded his carcass with their noses. I hope that they have a better understanding of what I’m doing when they see me dressed and smelling like this (I smell like mosquito repellant).

I ended up just walking the property then hit the woods on an adjacent property to get a feel for how things look this part of the season. While walking in I came across a family of deer. They wheezed and ran. As I entered an old oak stand and braced between two trees to post and observe, the family of deer returned to the treeline. One of the young does (I think it was a doe. It looked anterless) probably didn’t know what I was and she stood there wheezing, turning back and forth, and stomping her front hooves on the ground for close to 10 minutes. She was an estimated 60-100 yards off. I was just observing her. I don’t think she realized I was a bonafide threat until I made more exaggerated movements. Lucky for them I’m not an archer and it isn’t deer season for me yet.

Pro-Elite Tapered Compression Tube, Fact or Fiction?

Was anyone else watching the Pro-Elite on eBay?
It was a good looking gun but it went for 1136.11 plus shipping!

I have been watching the steady incline of the prices but this still surprised me. Has anyone had first hand experience with the "Tapered tubes" these were reported to suffer from?
Anecdotally, I have had 4 of them apart, 2 of which were said to suffer from the tapered tubes. In both cases the seal was welded to the face of the compression tube by grease that had hardened over time. Once cleaned up, they showed no tolerance issues with a bore gauge and both were also more than acceptably round both internally and externally. I have a friend who has also had multiple examples that were reported to have tapered tubes, only to find other causes for the stated issues.

In any case the fear of a tapered tube does not seem to impact prices.

Taipan VL .22 fpe

I own a Taipan Veteran Long in .22 with the following upgrades...1) power plenum 2) HUMA reg 3) stronger hammer spring. What is the max power that I can reasonably expect to see from this setup? My end goal is to fling 20.2 NSA slugs somewhere between 900-950 fps.(40-45 fpe) I'm just not sure if this gun is capable of it and I don't want to damage it trying. Any tips on shooting slugs with this setup are greatly appreciated.

“Seasoning” the bbl between different pellets ?

I’ve got 500 break in pellets thru my new R7 and HW30 so it’s time to find the magic pill for each rifle.
1) I hear both clean bbl vs don’t clean bbl but I assume after 1000 shots it might be time to - advice please
2) When I change pellets (brands/weights) for accuracy testing, do I shoot 3 or 5 to season the bore before shooting for group?
Thanks

Almost there on my Predator Polymag solution

So, these now BARELY fit in my magazines for the .30 caliber AEA - I'm going to try a little deeper cut on the next batch, and going to pay a little more attention to maintaining a 90 degree cut - but, overall I'm happy with the clean and round cut, and the highly consistent change to the meplat here.

Did an entire tin of Polymags in less than 5 minutes, and without any of the typical highspeed polymer projectiles! (if you've ever trimmed these with a set of snippers, you know! Felt like I was going to lose an eye)

Thoughts? Is it better to just mod the ammo a bit, or do you think messing around with machining the magazines is the way to go? (Assuming you REALLY want to use Polymags..)
