Cheap (under $1000) air rifle + night vision setup

So, I bought a Hatsan Vectis for $249 (refurbished direct from Hatsan) and combined it with a Sightmark Ultrashot R-Spec red dot which is around $100, and the Armasight Core Spark that I've had laying around since I got my nice PVS-14's. ($500 or so), and a Donny FL silencer for another $100 or so, and an IR illuminator (I cheated and used a $500 surefire vampire light, because I already have them, and I didn't want to buy a cheap light to fit the budget, but you can get a decent one for $50 or so if you look) - then assembled the whole kit into a working package. The worse part was needing to shave the top of the picatinny rail down in the rear of the Vectis, in order to be able to mount the NV far enough back to clear and be at a reasonable distance from my eye. I just used a chisel and then cleaned it up with a file and sandpaper. Also did have to chop off the muzzle brake to get to the barrel to attach the DonnyFL.

Overall? I'm pretty happy with the result - this will make a really fun & quiet night time hunting gun that's cheap enough to simply not need to worry about loaning it out as a 'buddy' gun when I'm using my nicer gear, but still nice enough they won't feel left out or cheated.

Please forgive the terrible shooting, doing this in darkness, holding my cell phone up to the NVG eyepeice, and trying to aim/fire using that as the view, well.. LOL, it's a little challenging. :)

If I was to recommend an upgrade, it'd definately be the red dot. - the M-Spec is a big upgrade

NLA beautiful Diana 350 .22 magnum wood stock

Too much gun for #backyardplinking. I don't hunt, which is really what it's made for, so it's gathering dust.
Time for me to find it a home where it'll get the love it deserves. Excellent T06 trigger.

Near-mint condition, never went beyond my back yard. The front stock screws fell out, so I replaced those. Holds.
Sights not installed as I planned on scoping the rifle, but they're included. No easily visible mars.

If reading this, you probably already know what you're getting, but here's some more info:

Any interest in custom leather ?

New to the site and looking to up my post count ultimately. But I do some decent leatherwork and was wondering if there would be any interest in custom leather rifle slings ? Tooled etc.
Also, I’m a mold builder by trade. Haven’t considered until recently the fact I can fairly easily design and build molds for pouring at home. Thanks for reading and helping me get my posts up lol. 🍻

Uragan 2

Does anyone have experience with the URAGAN 2? Their spec sheet states that the wood stock version weighs 7.5 lbs. Although the weight of the carbon fiber stock version is not listed, logic would dictate that it should weigh no more than 6.5 lbs or less so I ordered one just for that reason (I am 86 years old so I don’t do guns much over 6 lbs…un-scoped. When it arrived, it tipped my postal scale at a hair under 8 lbs!!!?? I returned it (at my expense) and am waiting to see if the seller charges me a restocking fee.
BTW, I had a lengthy discussion with the dealer befor ordering. He had just gotten them in and didn’t know any details other than what was shown on the manufacturer’s spec sheet but agreed that it should weigh about 6.5 lbs.

Absolutely ZERO blood.

Spent some real quality time yesterday getting the guns, one a Maverick Sniper, one a Maverick VP both .25 , tuned, and THAT is going to be a real WTH story for later. Any way it was suppose to rain here in CA and low and behold it did, along with wind, but hey might get lucky with the ground critters. Got there about 0930 and...the little pluckers were in their holes, by the stove, in their recliners, watching their flat panels. Nary a one popped its head out. Well never let a learning situation go to waste so, picked a small squirrel size rock about 45 yards away, wind let up for a moment and....whoopie hit it. Picked another rock a touch further out directly into the wind, took a shot and was low, gee I wonder why..rhetorical question eye ball adjusted up 4.5mil and whoopee hit it. Time for some BIG game...a beer bottle on it's side. First shot, OWTH I hit it, now the wind is coming at 90º so to finish off the kill it took 3 more shots but I can add it to my mantle. Now the tuning thing, I'm going to post it in the PCP forum, let's just say that it throws all of the rules straight out the window.

FX Maverick Tuning...SORT OF

Ok I admit I love messing with things that work fine. I've done a wee bit of research on tuning the Maverick, never could find the starting point for the hammer spring adjuster. Using JSB Match Diabolo Exact King .25 Cal, 25.39 Grains, So I made up something to start, on my VP .25 600mm barrel, tried 6mm, got that from Moose, who got it from FX??, used Steve's, suggestion for the front regulator of 120#. Set the rear to 78# and omg it was of the charts HOT, adjusted the HSR down and down and down, to a measured 4.28mm, final speed was 937 and a SD of 2.8 and TIGHT groups at 25 yards, like single hole tight, maybe I should use a rest next time?
HSA 4.28mm
120# Front
78#. Rear

Ok, time to rinse and repeat with my Maverick Sniper, I was going to use it for heavier pellets but....had a close to major disaster as in OMG did I FU the gun type. Got two slugs jammed, pulled the barrel got the jam cleared, got the mag out and....went to cock it...oh oh NOTHING. Ok hitting head on table isn't working so, let's try degassing it and hope. WHEW that did the trick. So....
135# Front Reg.
100# Rear Reg.
HSA 4.5mm. #7. 937fps. 50LB#

Now, please note the LONGER barrel with higher pressure and essentially the same HSA is the same darn speed, same SD, with the same absolutely awesome results.

As a note, on the HSA, and this is important, there are 4 components to the HSA, the body, the adjusting screw, a very tiny plastic spacer and the set screw on the side. That setscrew MUST be snug. I'm almost considering using some Loctite blue on it, just so I can get a nice firm feel on the adjuster and NOT have the set screw back out.

Oh that little ball bearing you just dropped and have spent 2 hours looking for. 3mm at Amazon. Buy a bunch, like 20. I'm just covering my bets on those little suckers.

Trash panda down

Last night I was wrapping up the edit of my short house sparrow video and the wife was sitting on the deck the time was about midnight. My phone started ringing but it was my wife. I thought this is either a funny situation or a very serious one. I answer the phone and she says she thinks a coon is in the apple tree. Immediately I am thinking which pcp do I grab. The .22 impact or one of the crowns in .25 and .30.

The impact has a 15-60 vortex golden eagle scope on it. Not the best for 30 yd night shooting. The .25 crown mk2 has a 5-25 venom and the 380mm barrel installed so I grabbed it and a light. We could see the eyes in the tree and it was definitely a masked bandit. I couldnt get a clean shot from branches and head movement so all I could do is keep moving and trying to get a good angle. Finally the coon crawled down to the lowest crotch and jumped down and ran. It looked like I was gonna miss a shot opportunity when the coon stopped turned to face me and stood up looking back. That was just enough time to get a shot off.

High end .30 caliber PELLET rifles?

I really need to ad a .30 caliber PELLET rifle to my line up , I have no interest in playing the slug game , looking for something to generate 75 plus fpe.

What are your suggestions? What have you shot? What .30 do you own?

Not into looking at any daystate or fx rifles.

The evol .30 is one I've always looked at and wanted but it's big $$ (not opposed to spending if worth it), the raw chassis rifles in .30 was another... also the prophet 2 recently caught my eye

Anyways just looking to hear your thoughts guys

Time for Unlimited Class in AAFTA?

I thought it best to start a new thread, rather than going further and further off topic in the "Is Open class suffering a slow death"

It's been attempted in the past, but there is a new AAFTA BoG for the most part and the clubs have more testing under their belts and who knows it might fly now.

Would we merge the Open class into the new class.. or leave open and add a totally new class?

eBay scam or honest seller ?

Attempting to purchase my first pcp off eBay. Walther reign .25 cal. Usps say shipping label created but item not received. Seller says it was sent but not scanned or something along those lines. I know ultimately I will either recieve rifle or get my money back. Just wondering if that has happened to anyone else. I know how terrible usps is so for now I’m giving seller the benefit of the doubt. Also I am trying to get my post count up to purchase a better used gun from the classifieds here. Cheers to all

Question about cleaning equipment, NOT cleaners or lubes

I just spent about an hour sorting out cleaning supplies for my new air guns. I still had all the stuff I used on the powder guns and I knew most of it was no longer useful to me. I got my hands on a .177 cal cleaning rod with a few assorted tips locally from a friend. Then I pulled out all of the non recommended cleaners and lubes I had in my good cleaning box. I put only Pellgunoil, Crosman Silicone Chamber Oil, and a can of RemOil that I'll use only on the exterior of the gun.

I do have one question, though. I kept all the .22 cal cleaning rods and tips in the box. It's going to sound like a REALLY stupid question, but is there any reason I can't use the rods and tips I had for my .22 powder guns on .22 airguns? Common sense is telling me .22 cal is .22 cal. Before I shove anything down the barrel of this new Mod 25 Supercharger, I thought I'd ask the silly question. Right now, I just need to shove a couple of clean patches through the barrel to be sure there aren't any leftover metal shavings in the barrel.

I have had this less than a year. I was looking for a replacement for my Cricket. I just don't love it. 700mm barrell, does not have the externally adjustable regulator. It has the carbon fiber stiffener on the FX Superior barrell. Comes with 3 magazines, the ambidextrous cheek rest. Check the pics. Paint peeling a bit on the cheek rest and there is one screw missing from the cheek rest. Otherwise great condition. It held 210 bar for 3 months. Till I emptied the Magazines this morning. Still holding air, just now at about 200 bar. Has the adapter for 1/2 x20.

Shooting in grass follow up, excellent day shooting, classifieds etiquette, and some people just shouldnt work on airguns....

Tl;Dr - It wasnt grass that threw my shots off, I had a great day shooting this morning (see pics), some people really need to be more upfront about what they are selling, some people really shouldn't bring a tool to their hand let alone that tool to an airgun after its in their hand......

So I posted Friday that I was having some crazy fliers and I didn't have my chrono with me.... see thread below

Anyways ...
Yesterday I brought the rifle to the table and it was doing the same thing, this time I had a chrono and this time I was paying a lot more attention to the sound of the rifle when I saw the FPS difference (stay true to your senses!) , I would get a nice solid string at 935, then one super high, one super low, we are talking 50-60 fps up or down. During these dips or spikes I heard an audible PING that I wasn't getting during the other shots. I said ok, time to stop shooting, lets take this bad boy apart.

Now I have not had this rifle apart since I acquired it. It did not have the original MTNGhost HST adjuster brass set screw when I got it but a black donnyfl one that did absolutely nothing as the rifle was sent to me with the HST adjuster was just all over the place and not locked in place, I removed the Donnyfl as it would not thread in enough which I found weird, and replaced it with a factory grub screw, problem solved! so I thought....

Back to yesterday, I take the rifle inside and disassemble it, MY GOD, the lint, hair, mucky oily mess I found within the trigger assembly and the hammer spring/ hammer bore... terrible ... I really think a lot of airgunners are very harsh on their stuff and do only care about how the rifle looks to everyone elses eye before how the internals are fairing .... I clean all this up and while Im cleaning I catch the swap on something sharp and it pulls it off the q tip.... (see pic of remaining tarnished brass HST adjuster set screw in my hand). I get in there and dislodge it with a pick, it had been lodged into the side of the bore causing the hammer spring to be pushed slightly to one side causing wear on the other side of the bore (MTNghost hammer is in perfect shape). I am fuming at this point because this is just neglegence and who knows from who, previous owner? owner before him? Who cares lets just remedy it.

I get the dremel out and my extended bits and get to polishing and massaging ( I removed only a couple high spots, surprised there wasn't more damage) , it looked far worse originally and I am really impressed with how my work came out, so I polished the inside of the hammer spring bore, the spring itself, the hammer, the HST adjuster and kept cleaning.

This has me wanting to just buy new from now on, its not the first instance but probably going to be the last. I got another rifle a month ago that was sold in working condition and when it arrived the trigger was so out of adjustment the safety and trigger were bound up, easy enough, sure.... remedied? yes.... however why wasn't the rifle gone over with a fine tooth comb before shipped? I have a friend who received multiple rifles with issues in one batch, cracked stocks, boogered up hardware from misuse of tools, terrible tunes... however they were not sold this way.

I posted this rifle for sale yesterday because I said I am just going to doubt it from now on knowing what I found even though I tested it, shot it, and it actually was performing better than when it had FIRST shown up.... however I am confident in my work and feel that the rifle is in an improved state compared to when I originally got it a month ago and I now know more about it as well, so I pulled it down.

I shot 65 shots tethered, chrono attached, 6 groups, meaning they were all getting about a magazine or more (10+ shots per group), and this was done shooting on a crooked table, 55 yards, using a single shot tray no mags and shooting quickly more focused on any malfunctions.

Anyways happy weekend guys and hope you all got a little something out of this thread.

Tuning  Tuning my FX Crown

I purchased my Crown about a year ago. I have done nothing to it but shoot it. I have not adjusted anything but the scope to sight it in. I shoot the JSB Exact King at 25.4 grains. The same pellet I shot out of my Air Arms S510 before I sold it. I am able to shoot 45 yards in my back yard and I constantly get one ragged hole. Now most people will tell me to leave it alone, but most you airgun buffs know you just cant do that. With all the different pellets out there, and slugs, I would like to try something else. I want to try also to do some adjusting to my Crown. There is two wheels on the left side of the rifle. The one is set on 25-30 caliber, and the other wheel on the MAX setting.
What happens lets say if I turn the forward wheel to the .177-.22 setting? Lets say I turn the rear wheel to a lower setting off the MAX setting that it's on now. My thought is this...I will probably lose velosity, but I will probably gain more shots per fill. I do not have a compressor, nor a hand pump, and so I depend on having my 4500 PSI tank filled at my fire department. Most of my shooting is at Pigeons, and small rodents that do not require as much energy to dispose of as my Crown has to offer. I would also like to try the GTO pellets just to see how they work in my Crown.
So what do I do? Just experiment with the power controls by moving them? Will I be able to obtain more shots per fill by turning them to a lower setting?
I would like to hear from you!! Thank you

Shooting kneeling or sitting, elbow propped on knee. Any tips?

Obviously you can't be as steady as a bench shooting situation, or if propped on a monopod/tree/etc... I've tried holding on target then shoot, and I've tried slowly swinging over the target and shoot. The swinging method seems to be working better for me, but is far from perfect. Any techniques work well for you?
