Hope I made a good choice

I have a center point 6-20x50 scope on my Avenge x. I have not been very happy with it. I saw the Vector marksman 6-20x50 are on Halloween sale 40% off , plus 10% for new customer. So total of 50% off and free shipping.
I hope it's a good scope and I made a good buy. Lol
What do y'all think? Are they good scopes for the price?
I was looking at the discovery scopes, but being a disabled Firefighter on a fix income. Was trying to stay under the 200 mark. And at 145 to my door I did.
Here is where I got it.

Stormrider vs Squirrel

I was out doing my duty clearing out the sparrows. Got 6 of them, and I was lining up another one when I noticed this poor bastard hopping around in the background.

I took an off hand shot about 40 yards while he had his head down below the grass. I honestly thought I'd miss and spook him, but he dropped and then did the flop dance over into the neighbor's yard lol.

Pretty much a perfect shot. Went in just below the left ear and came out the right eye. AEA center punch 15.9 grain pellet doing 18 fpe.

Snowpeak  P35X Review

Recently found myself desiring a ‘powerful’ bullpup style .177. Looking around, I found I liked the look of the new P35X. Not too much info on this gun that isn’t limited to 12 fpe or translating. I am no stranger to the Snowpeak (and progeny) ‘barrel lottery.’ I just tell myself, fine, if it stinks I’ll re-barrel it. With the 65cc plenum and longer runway (~530 mm) I hoped to get 30 to 32 fpe. In artillery, barrels are sometimes listed as multiples of the caliber, making this a .177/118 where the .22 variant would be about .22/96. Why bring this up? Caliber relative to barrel length. My armchair calculations suggested that I could be getting around 30 fpe without a lot of pressure.

Back when dinosaurs roamed the earth, and springers were top shelf aspirations while MSPs were the norm, very strong performance in .177 was about 16 fpe. Even today springers exceeding 20 fpe in .177 are pretty uncommon. At the expected performance of about 30 fpe we’ll probably be looking for slugs in order to perform well. Maybe some of the super heavy (beyond 10.x gr) pellets will be alright. I did test JSB 10.3s for the first shots and they averaged just over 1050 fps, so yeah, heavier is likely a good idea.

The box arrived in good shape. The barrel needed the requisite cleaning, lots of crud in there. The wood grain is attractive on my example. I mounted a DNT ThermNight 225, a DonnyFL Yokozuna, and stuffed the foam from 3 foam hair curlers over the barrel in the shroud to slow the air coming back out the perforated shroud. It is stupidly quiet this way, the action is much louder to the ear than anything else in the shot cycle.

SPAP35Xb.jpg

SPAP35Xa.jpg

Turns out I get 29.2 fpe with JSB Beasts (16.2 gr) with the factory settings. So we’re close to 30 fpe. Seems the reg is right around 1750 psi on my example, so performance headroom on the regulator is there. As has been reported with the P35, P15, and variants the hammer spring seems to runs out of adjustability before the regulator maxes out. Mine was set with about 1/2 turn left of increasing preload before bottoming out. Since I wanted to see some high fpe, I maxed the hammer and then backed off a tiny bit.

With the JSB KO 13.43 slugs I get right at 60 shots before it falls off the regulator. Velocity just gracefully falls as we drop below the regulator pressure. So 5 magazines before we need a refill.

Below is listed the projectile weight versus energy for pellets (average of 11 shots/1 magazine).

Weight Energy Projectile

10.3 24.63 FX Pellet

13.4 27.38 FX Pellet

15.42 27.99 Gamo G-Hammer

15.74 28.26 H&N Rabbit Magnum II

16.1 28.39 Seneca Domes

16.2 29.17 JSB Beast

The Seneca Domes were the most accurate with this tune, though the Beasts and Rabbit Magnum II were very acceptable.

Below is listed the projectile weight versus energy for slugs (average of 11 shots/1 magazine).

Weight Energy Projectile

13 27.03 Zan

13.43 26.73 JSB KO

15 25.78 NSA

16 27.14 H&N

16 27.72 Zan

18 26.13 Wildman

20 26.88 H&N

20 26.51 Zan

The JSB KOs shot very well. However, the H&N 20gr really shined. The first 4 shots all went through a barely enlarging hole and the following 7 whittled that hole a bit bigger except one shot that wandered just enough to oblong the hole - probably me. Shooting at 25 yards has me shooting sub-sub dime sized 11 shot groups for everything but the 15gr NSAs, it appears this barrel does not get along with those slugs, at least with this tune. In my experience with SPA barrels, they tend to like either the super-light or super-heavy stuff. Someday I’ll write up my experiences with my loveably schizophrenic Notos.
H&N20&NSA15.JPG

In the graph you can clearly see the slug weight versus energy curve is significantly behind the pellets. I conclude from the chart that we’re best off if we have projectiles in the 16gr range. Sometime this winter I’ll open it up and see if I can get that 32fpe with 16gr at around 950.

Oct. 31, 2024
A Washington man who killed hundreds of eagles and hawks in Montana that he later helped traffic and sell on the black market was sentenced to nearly four years in prison on Thursday, prosecutors said.
From 2015 to 2021, the man, Travis John Branson, 49, of Cusick, Wash., traveled to the Flathead Indian Reservation in western Montana to help kill hundreds of birds in a “killing spree,” the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Montana said. In addition to his sentence of three years and 10 months in federal prison, Mr. Branson was ordered to pay $777,250 in restitution, prosecutors said.
“Branson went on self-described ‘killing sprees’ for thousands of eagles and hawks,” Jesse Laslovich, the U.S. attorney for the District of Montana, said in a statement. Mr. Laslovich added that Mr. Branson “butchered” the birds “and sold the parts and feathers for profit on the black market.”
Mr. Branson, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy and trafficking charges in March, killed at least 118 eagles and 107 hawks himself, according to investigators who traced the killings to Mr. Branson through text messages. In total, Mr. Branson worked with others to kill about 3,600 birds, prosecutors said.

In December, prosecutors indicted Mr. Branson and a co-conspirator, Simon Paul, who at one point lived in St. Ignatius, Mont. The two worked together to shoot, traffic and sell hundreds of birds, according to court records. Mr. Paul was also charged with conspiracy and wildlife trafficking charges in December but was a fugitive as of Thursday, the U.S. attorney’s office said.
Court records quoted text messages and cited PayPal transactions that showed that Mr. Branson had sent photos and received text messages and payment for a golden eagle tail feather set.
“Got that thang from Simon,” a buyer texted Mr. Branson, referring to feathers Mr. Paul had sent. “And the mirror feathers. Tnks.”
In March 2021, law enforcement officers stopped Mr. Branson and recovered from his vehicle a golden eagle’s severed feet connected to long, obsidian black talons and feathers. Mr. Branson and Mr. Paul also killed deer to lure eagles to the area, court records said.

From 2009 until 2021, Mr. Branson made between $180,000 and $360,000 by selling eagles’ feathers and parts on the black market, prosecutors said. How much Mr. Branson sold between 2009 until 2015 was not immediately clear.

Andy Nelson, a lawyer for Mr. Branson, declined to comment on his client’s case on Friday. A lawyer for Mr. Paul did not immediately respond to an email requesting comment.
Bald eagles, which were among the birds Mr. Branson and others killed, are revered in the United States as a national symbol.
“We are going to feel the impacts of the Flathead Reservation’s raptor loss for years to come,” Mike Dolson, the chairman of the Confederated Salish and Kootenai Tribes, said in a statement. “Eagles are not only a treasured and important part of the Reservation’s ecosystem, but they also have a profound place in C.S.K.T. cultural and spiritual practices.”

Karma  Anyone seen this yet?

Other  One more advantage of slugs over pellets

One advantage Ive not seen brought up, nor have I realized until today, slugs are far more resistant to 73 IQ postal employees. This is not on TPS, as they always pack appropriately. I got my weekly ammo haul this afternoon, I ordered a couple boxes of zan slugs, couple of tins of HP slugs, 2 tins of 18.1 pellets. One JSB, ONE aea. The package was jammed tightly into my mailbox, and must've been sorted by silverbacks during a territorial challenge. Of 500 pellets, 58 out of 1 tin, and 101 out of the other were viable. Slugs, much more resistant to government "excellence". TPS please offer UPS shipping. Please.

Dealer return policy

I made an inquiry to a dealer regarding a PCP air rifle advertised. In reading the disclosures, I noticed a restriction against any air rifle return once out the door. In a follow-up email it was confirmed that this is indeed the dealer's policy, and stated as being an industry standard. I have not done business with this dealer, and I have no reason to doubt his integrity, but I found this unusual, or at least inconsistent with my experience with other dealers. I never want to be an unreasonable or problem customer, so I will not discuss it with him further. Which gets me to the point of this post. Maybe I'm just out of date, as I haven't bought an air rifle in a couple of years, but I've bought quite a few during the last 10+ years. During that period, I had three instances when I returned an air rifle, and the dealers had no issue with it. I will not make any further disclosures about this experience since, as I said, I have no reason to doubt the dealer's integrity or reputation, just wondering if my experience is inconsistent with other members here.

Hey guys

Need some help I am setting up a brand new panthera and noticed when I adjust the regulator pressure to 150 or above it starts to leak and bleed air around the regulator adjustment….. where my finger is pointing…. From what I understand that isn’t normal but wanted to see if I’m missing something before I send this gun back to Utah airguns to be fixed it states doing this the second I shot it for the first time and adjusted the regulator pressure…. Any help would be awesome

N/A  Shooting indoors

I'd like to be able to shoot indoors to mess around with tuning on rainy/cold days. I have this bullet catcher which I use outdoors: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07MH44YS5/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

It works great as in there is no way a .22 pellet is getting through it but the problem is a bunch of lead pieces/dust collects in front and some behind it.

Do you guys have suggestions for a pellet catches that will just "swallow" pellets and leave nothing behind? In other words, something safe and with no mess.

Thank you!

Events  Who are you calling an old timer??

YOU!!

This Saturday, November 9th, Tulsa will host an “Old Timers” match.

What is an Old Timers match you ask?

It’s a match which doesn’t cater to the young whippersnappers who haven’t had to experience joint pain or joint replacement which can make it difficult to shoot forced positions.

And gettin old ain’t for sissies.

We will shoot a traditional sixty-shot match WITHOUT any forced positions BUT with a HIGHER than normal Troyer, so get those range cards fine-tuned.

And if shooting with the Tulsa group doesn't make your social media likes go through the roof,, we will have a raffle for an OLD TIMER KNIFE! Yes, you can win an Old Timer Knife just by entering the match regardless of how well you shoot!

But wait! There’s more!

We will also be giving out commemorative OLD TIMERS poker chips for the top three finishers in all classes!
For more information, you can reach out to me through a PM and you can get location and start times by clicking on the link at the bottom of this page.
See you there ya old timer!!

N/A  My 57 year affair

Hello again citizens of Airgun Nation. it has been 3 years since I last posted. True to form, I got busy with something else. I promise to be faithful from now on.

Anyway, I have been thinking about airguns and airgun engineering / design for years, 57 to be exact.

Today I had a novel thought while reading some of the threads about magnum springers. Open Source, airgun enthusiasts design and maybe even build the ultimate coil / gas spring gun. Possibly our ideas would stimulate an existing manufacture to use what we come up with, or someone somewhere starts their own company.

If there is a moderator reading this, could you tell me if this Open Source design / build team of volunteers is something that would be allowed, and how something like this could be structured / organized here on Airgun Nation? Most everyone has a good idea or two, and no doubt there are those that know their way around a cad program, wood workers, metal fabricators, mechanical engineers, machinists etc. What we come up with would be freely shared with anyone interested. Maybe someday the ultimate coil / gas spring air rifle will be produced as a result of our efforts.

Thoughts anyone ?
