I saw a post a while back about "are expensive airguns worth it?" and it got me thinking.

I've been kind of discouraged by the offers given by shops to trade airguns. I know in the powder burner world, the usual offer is 65-70% depending on popularity, but it seems in the airgun world it's far lower, in the 35-45% range. I'm talking about top shelf airguns, that cost $1200 and up.

Anyone else wonder about this discrepency in values? I mean maybe it's true, they're not worth it. I know it's a hobby and we're not here as consumers to make money, but it sure seems out of whack. The new Blackwolf is pushing a price most of us don't/won't want to pay.

The fwb 124 are all old guns now, the seals crumbled and need replacing. When in this process new piston seals, new breech seal , spring and spring guide etc.. Not unhappy with stock performance but while going through the installation would like to improve for best results. Reading here many have been down this road, looking for advice.

Greetings form Georgia. I'm new to the forum and new to the sport. I've owned a Gamo (I think a Raptor) for several years but bought it on a whim with very little information. Having gone down the rabbit hole now, I know that I really don't know much about anything. I mostly use my rifle for squirrel and rabbit hunting. The occasional groundhog. I'd like to buy a PCP and outfit it with a decent scope. I'd really like a Bluetooth scope, but that may be for another day given that I don't know much and I'm on a bit of a budget. I'd really like to spend less than $1,500 including a compressor, but I could justify (I can talk myself into anything) $2,000. Any recommendations? Just looking for a nice, accurate squirrel hunter.

I know on some other forums the noobs get razzed, so I'm prepared with armor and shield.

Let me first set the table... I've been a long-time outdoorsman with a 23 yr military career behind me and have been a "powder gun" shooter for most of my life. In "powder guns," I can pull one out of the box, give them a good cleaning, set up the gun(s), site in, and then count on them to HIT what I am aiming at, with the FIRST shot...EVERY TIME. None of these guns are considered "high end." I have 4 Ruger 10/22 rifles in various configurations, none costing more than $500, and each will put 10 shots in a single ragged hole at 50 yards, with whatever ammo that's compatible. All of my center-fire rifles will do the same, but at 100yds+.

Due to health issues related to my military career, I am 100% disabled and can no longer hunt, but to still be able to "shoot", I turned to "Airguns.".... I started with a few different "Springers". And I still can't understand why those types of "airguns" are even made/sold... unless you just want to solve problems each time you shoot them.

After that, I dipped my toe into the .22 PCP gun ocean... The first was a Marauder, then a Gauntlet 2, then a Notos, a Niksan Ozark, and most recently a Barra 1100z Gen 2.. It took a lot of modification to the Marauder to get "relative accuracy" out of it. I could never get the Gauntlet 2 even close to being "accurate", no matter what I did to it, and thus I no longer even shoot that gun...... money wasted. The Niksan Ozark was an impulse buy and a total waste of money. (plus a very bad experience with the seller) The 1100z was returned under a warranty issue (a new one is currently on its way to me), which leaves the Notos...the least expensive of the lot, and is the ONLY gun out of them all that will consistently put 7 shots (mag capacity is 7) in a single ragged hole at 25yrds, with any pellet I feed it. If this is possible in a sub $275 gun, why is it not demanded/expected in EVERY PCP gun costing more than $1K?

Preferring traditional style guns, the FX DRS recently caught my eye, so I watched videos from Pyramid, and Gateway to Airguns. In the Pyramid video, the host was "wowed" with a 3/8" group off a benchrest. In the Gateway to airguns video, the host louded "accuracy" of the gun, but out of 4 groups....only one was a single "ragged hole" off sandbags. Other groups were "scattered", which makes me question consistency. After checking, I was very disappointed to find that the DRS, in the least expensive version, is a $1k gun.

So, having said all of that, I've read time and again... You have to pay for accuracy in PCP guns. My question is...just how much must an individual pay for a traditional style PCP to get CONSISTENT ACCURACY OUT OF THE BOX without having to test endless pellets and/or make modifications to the gun?? OR does anything like that even exist in the PCP world??

What do I want? As described in the first paragraph, a gun that once "set up" will give me confidence in its accuracy each and every time it's shot... but moreso a gun that I can trust to be accurate on the fist shot... because in most pest/varmint/small game hunting situations, that first shot is the only one I will get.
So far, the Notos is the only PCP I've shot that gives me relative confidence in first shot accuracy, and it's the least money out of all the PCPs I own. However, its downfall is power. I've literally watched pellets bounce off squirrels when the shots were beyond about 35 yards.

Is it legal to ship Airguns to Chicago

Hi guys - I just got done with opening up all the ports, added Huben Dream valve with bottle, 500mm barrel kit from C-88, regulator set around 2400-2500. Shooting 13.43 pellets, getting avg of 1014 fps and 31 fpe with small hammer spring adjustments. Would like to clean up the hammer itself as it occasionally gets a little rough when cocking but I live with that.

Only thing I haven’t done is open up the 3 ports on the barrel, but don’t think that’s necessary at this point? Maybe I’ll try that next, but wanted to see if there anything else I’m missing or anything still recommended to max this thing out (unless it’s already there).

Also, has anyone done a threaded barrel and/or shroud mod somehow? Would love to just screw barrel back in as opposed to this grub screw setup, but maybe it’s designed that way for a reason not sure.

Still need to refine the setup a bit and reposition the table. But was able to take these two tonight. The rats knew I was there because there was an unexpected by me, backlighting situation. Anyway stayed only an hour, as it was a long workday and I got cold. And like I mention I need to refind the setup. These two were taken at 15 yards, as you can see and hear. The Atomic with the TP on low and the CPHPs simply wreck them at those distance… Both rats were lobotomized…

So we know that the speed of sound is the upper speed limit of any gas powered gun, but also that the speed of sound will vary depending on the gas being used, the temperature and it's pressure. Under normal conditions however the speed of sound in air is about 1125 fps.

Just sticking with air here, it seems that spring piston rifles can significantly exceed 1125 fps mostly by superheating the air as the piston compresses it. The fastest velocities I have seen claim to be in excess of 1600 fps.

PCP rifles seem to be able to also exceed 1125 fps, but not to the same extent and I haven't found many reputable sources claiming velocities any higher than 1300 fps, This is where things get kind of interesting. AI and most of the physics tutorials regarding the speed of sound will claim that pressure does not play a significant role in the SOS, but it quickly becomes obvious that this is because they are only considering normal atmospheric pressures. When you try and get estimates of the speed of sound at the kinds of pressures we're dealing with there just doesn't seem to be much out there. I've looked at Bernoulis Equation, but trying to find things like the density of air at 5000 psi isn't exactly easy either.

I'm just wondering if any of the engineers or physicists out there have any ballpark ideas on the speed of sound at high pressures. Also, it would seem to me that with the way PCP's operate, the expanding air should be cooling as it expands which would in turn also lower the speed of sound.

Not sure if this is the particular forum but, whatever. I dropped this PIA from a tree notch with no backing except my neighbors garage, however, I knew a polymag would not exit the squirrels body. It’s designed for minimal penetration. And it does that job extraordinarily.

Before I start this review. This is my first "expensive" PCP, all of my previous experience is with guns under the $1k mark. For all I know this gun is crap compared to guns at the same price range. Also, this review is from very little experience with the gun, it is a "first shot review" for a reason. I haven't even shot paper with it yet. With that out of the way lets get started.

Let's start with the bad. Much of this is fixable (with or without mods) or nitpicks, except for one (maybe two but just don't be left handed).
The nozzle cap that goes on the fill nozzle is not attached to the gun in any way. I can easily see myself losing this.
I only have short scope rings and this gun needs higher scope rings for it to be comfortable to shoot with. I think this is more of a bullpup issue then with the gun itself.
The top rail is short. It is long enough to mount a scope but don't expect to put anything else up there. There are side rails for lights and such though.
If you use a bipod on the bottom rail it makes it difficult (maybe impossible depending on the bipod) to adjust the first plenum.
The instructions are almost worthless. The instructions for tuning the duel plenums are confusing and might even be incorrect.
Setting up the duel plenums is a bit of a process.
The case it came in is too short for the gun if it has a scope on it. It is also not long enough to store with the moderator I have on it (DonnyFL Koi), it might fit with a shorter moderator though.
The "power wheel" adjustments are a bit high between numbers. I lost 30fps going from 7 to 6 on it. I feel that this is quite a jump from one number to the next.
This is not a gun for the left handed. The mag along with the safety will be in your face.
Zero spare parts or tools. At this price point would it have killed them to throw in an allen wrench and a few extra o-rings. It did come with a foster fill adapter (that I didn't need).
And lastly, and the worse one, is the safety location. Man, who though putting the safety in the farthest to reach spot was a good idea? It is in the most rearward spot on the gun next to your face.

That seems like a lot of bad, don't it? It's really not though, most are small things that can easily be fixed (like getting higher rings or getting a longer top rail). After setting up the first reg you almost never have to touch it again, so that removes some bads. The case being to small for a scope is a bummer. The only real negative here is the safety, but it is quite annoying. Also, if your left handed don't get this gun.

Enough being a negative Nancy, time for some good stuff.
Very well constructed. No plastic parts that I could find, everything is aluminum or metal of some sort. Except for the butt pad and cheek rest.
The cheek rest is some sort of hard foam or something. It seems durable but soft enough to be comfortable.
The butt pad is vertically adjustable. There isn't much adjustablity but it is there, which is more then I can say for most guns.
The action is amazing. It is smooth and easy to cock. My cheaper guns don't even compare to it. The first time I chambered a round I had to look to make sure I loaded the mag.
The trigger is superb. I always hear about how bad bullpup triggers are so I wasn't expecting much. But the trigger on this gun is just as good as the best triggers on my firearms, if not better. It is also adjustable, although I haven't messed with that and likely won't (it is good where it is for me).
When your mag is empty there is a small audible click. Its a small thing but it is nice. I'm guessing other guns do this as well, I think it is the sound of the mag hitting the stopping point but with the mag being close to your head you hear it better.
It came in a hard case. Sure, it might be too small for the gun with a scope on it but it is a good quality case. I heard the VP version doesn't come with one btw.
Its short. 27 1/2 inches long. With my modulator on it is slightly longer then the VP version.


I can't comment on accuracy, almost every shot I took with it has just been tuning it. I shot it a few times at paper just to ensure my zero was some what good. After those shots I learned that my first plenum wasn't doing anything, it was completely open. So, I went about setting up the plenums. I read the directions then promptly ignored the directions and watched a YT video on how to do it. It is a bit of a process.
You have to open the second plenum all the way. Remove the bottle. Degas. Set the first plenum all the way down. Attach the bottle. Set the first plenum to where you want it to shoot at. Increase it by 25-60bar. Then remove bottle. Degas. Set the second plenum all the way down. Attach bottle. And then set the second plenum where you want to shoot at.
That is a lot. But after doing that once you won't have to mess with the first plenum unless you go out of that 25-60bar range with the second plenum. I honestly am unsure how much the two plenum system helps. Perhaps it increases the lifespan of the plenums, idk.
After tuning for a little I decided to try out the slug transfer port side of the barrel. Which the instructions don't tell you is a thing. I was using FX Hybrid slugs, so it made sense to use the slug porting. I was at 802fps, changing the port added 23fps. Consitering how much of a change this makes, why don't they tell you about it in the directions? If I didn't see a video about this gun before hand, I wouldn't know that this is a thing.

I'll be messing with it more but for now... Numbers!

So, do I like the gun? Yeah. Was it worth the price? To early to tell. If the accuracy is as good as the trigger and action, then likely yes. But until I put some shots on paper I can't say for sure.

With a welcome to 2025 and belated Happy new year to all present we start off the 2025 season on a Beautiful sunny and clear day !!!
The early bird crew arrives on site just past sunrise @ 7:20 am to get all required to pull off this match organized and ready for others to join in helping set up once on site.
By 8:00 or so we have plenty of help and finish up today's course configuration, which is a full 15 lanes. Plus an extra bell target on the offhand lane where we are doing a nice Extra Points addition ..... ( We'll state that in a bit )

This is a Match we do as our first every year in remembrance to our departed club Co-Founder Mr. Jim Cyran who passed away suddenly a few years ago.
So in the spirit of what Jim disliked most ... Lol The dreaded KNEELING Lane !!! We do what ? .... Yup set up a LOT of kneeling shots !
Lane 7 with knockdown targets was a 4 shot Mandatory Kneeling ( Or offhand if unable ) & was set up as a tough kneeler and super tough is having to offhand those shots.
Lane 15 had the clubs Bell targets of which we had 3 set and designated as an Offhand lane. It too was set as pretty dang difficult offhand shots, But .... "Extra Points" could be found here by ... Taking the shots at the bells by Kneeling and gaining double points per hit !!
* This took a 3 target lane from a 6 point possible to 12 points if taking them all on while kneeling !! ( Jim if watching would be crying or laughing )

Todays also provided a GREAT Lunch post match with Homemade Tri-tip sandwiches, Fruit salad, Potato salad, cookies & drinks. * Thank you to Sam R for all his pre-prep and work on this lunch. An hour or so before we finished up match out came out 2 trays of Shrimp Cocktails provided by Conrad R. Shoot, Munch & have some Lunch, whats not to love in that situation ?

Ok ... The match itself as stated was 15 lanes + 1 extra and with the bonus point had this match at 68 possible points ( 62 + 6 extra )
The set-up was biased towards medium / semi easy as a first match of the season expecting someone to perhaps clean it ? ... Tho a few stinker shots were there to really challenge even our best shooters !

We seldom do shoot offs, but with these two in recent years it is generally this way and the MD just could not pass on the chance to keep it serious and a teaching / learning opportunity.
2" pigeon at 55 yards !! OFFHAND ... Yea no joke there ! Both missed twice. Ok still tied, so Same target again "Kneeling"one shot each or we shake hands and it's over ... while we still shook hands afterwards it was over with the outcome on record.

EVERYONE IS HUNGRY and so the course is left as is and we get to the serving of lunch, where we get some help from Scotts wife "Dawn" and Conrads wife "Cheryl" all get a plate of food to enjoy !! We had expected a tad more shooters to make the match so seconds were there for those who wished to eat some more ! & we still had some left overs that went home with a few of us.
After most are done chowing down the now less enthusiastic crew waddles food full out to get the targets picked up, winders wound and bricks onto trailer. Speedy & efficient & I love it !!

We announce the results to all present and speak of the upcoming GP down in Southern cal, pay homage to Mr. Jim Cyran and we're done officially with the match. A few stay after and play freely with other air guns for a couple hours.
1st person there 7:20 am ( MD ) is also the last to leave @ 3:15 pm .... yea thats like a Fun work day and will do that any time !!!

Ok so I have decided am going to get one last pcp rifle. My budget is max 1500 just for the rifle i have couple of other pcps, notos, avenger x, XM1, and marauder semi auto but they no longer scratch the itch that I have. So I want a rifle that is accurate and that is the most important thing the max distance I will be shooting is 100 yards give or take. i would also like the rifle to require minimal tuning, it’s nice to have all the bells and whistles but I think simplicity always comes out in top. And lastly I would like the rifle to be rugged one that I can take to the woods and do not necessarily have to baby it. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciate and I thank you in advance.

Just wanted to come on and tell you guys about this deal because I’ve been looking for a decent set of binoculars for quite some time to replace my BX-2s.

I’m sure there’s some optic snobs out there that these won’t be good enough for and trust me I get it haha…but for the majority of peeps this deal is unbelievable and hard to pass up at this price point. I’ve heard these get you 95% of a Swarovski EL at a fraction of the price.

Maven has march madness going on where you can get the B2s for $850! These are normally around $1100. Then if you are military or first responder you can get 20% off through govx which knock it down another $170. At under $700 I promise you guys you won’t find a better set of binoculars…..impossible! I would also argue that these bad boys couldn’t even be beat by anything under $2000 which makes it that much sweeter of a deal.

Anyway, just wanted to pass this info along so hopefully someone else could take advantage of the deal as well. Might do a quick review and write up once they arrive so you guys have something to go off of.

So Friday turned out to be a somewhat productive day after all. Zeroed scope and adjusted hammerspring on Puncher Breaker .25, shot 7 mags and gauge was still in green. Replaced a breech seal on a Hatsan 95 and saw about a 60 fps increase and with a heavier 14.7 pellet instead of the previous 14.3. The windage and elevation marking wore off the dials and that took a long time to finally get it zeroed as well. Played a few rounds of crazy 8s with a Crosman Valiant and had a little target practice with a Gamo Maxxim g2. Hadn't shot that gun in a while and was quite surprised when the first two shots went dead center at 35 yards in two different targets. Maxxim isn't powerful, but really accurate. Not a bad day at all.

I have 7 steel target hangers up for your consideration. I believe these are made from AR500 steel. They won't break / chip / dent if hit. Especially from an air gun. However, they'll work perfectly if you're shooting firearms too.
The targets themselves are not included. They are only pictured to show the hanger's ability to support different thicknesses of steel targets. These hangers are designed to hang from EMT up to 1" thick from a target stand something like this: Of course, you can rig up whatever works for you!!
The hanger to the left is zinc plated for ultimate durability. The others are powder coated. Other than that, they are basically the same.
These are heavy and could be pricey to ship.

The picture above demonstrates the hanger's ability to support different target thickness.
For a visual, I thru this stand together quick to show how they look mounted. I mounted 6 targets, 1" -> 6". Normally, there will be spacers or spring clips to keep the hangers from sliding left/right.

Just to clarify, this sale is for the hangers only. No stand and no targets.

I have a question that perhaps has not been addressed.

New to bench rest shooting, I'm wondering whether a front rest such as the SEB250 coupled with a rear rest such as a Saber Tactical Pro Universal Bench Monopod is superior to using a pan tilt tripod head as the front rest with the same rear monopod?

I like the precise adjustability and convenience of using the Saber Tactical rear monopod for aiming, but am wondering if a tripod head that vertically adjusts to the angle of the rear monopod provides a better base given that the front contact area remains uniform despite the angle.

Any insights would be appreciated.

I read somewhere on AGN that the CPHP pellets were not allowed at some clubs due to damage they create on targets.

I can actually tell when someone is shooting them as they "sound" way louder (even at <20 fpe) when they strike the target or paddle
and
i can see the extra damage or wear and tear the create on a gamo knock down target, esp with a smaller KZ.

Does anyone have a link to the info about the crosman premier heavy pellets damaging targets... i just can not find it.
