Taipan  Still Enjoying My Taipan! What Have You Been Shooting?

This thing just shoots! No fuss gun. Yeah, the rear cocking is its weakest feature but NOT a deal breaker. This is a robust gun.
It was a cold and clear day out so set up some steel and paintballs at 30ish yards. I shot 20 pellets worth and went inside to warm up. After some coffee I headed back outside. I did the same thing again but this time I had a shooting partner and I captured some action with the phone camera.
Airpower all the way!

N/A  Show us your mancave, boredom inspired airgun permutations

I've had this P-Rod's action in a 1701 tube for awhile, it's been a hoot. But been housebound since Wednesday with a stomach virus, so boredom set in, and this is what I came up with -

1705277819373.png

P-Rod guts in a 1701 tube, slightly modified Buckrail forearm & red dot, Huggett Atom moderator, DFL adaptor.

Getting two full mags in the upper 600's.

Let's see what the rest of the gang has come up with!

EDIT: I again apologise for the crappy cell phone pic, I was bad, Santa didn't bring me a new digital camera. If any member has a good suggestion for an easy to use camera for posting, SteveV is all ears!

Airgun case foam.

Has anyone else wondered where Pyramyd air gets their packing foam they use with pellet shipments? I've cut a few pieces to use on things over the years and it cuts very precise and seems like it would be a much better option than the foam most gun cases come with. As well, you could cut it much easier and have a better fit inside the case IMO..

Taipan  Taipan air tube

Hi,

Wondering whether I should be concerned about this nick on the air tube. Not sure when/how it was caused.

I first noticed it because there was residue (probably ballistol or moisture) around it.

So I wiped it clean with ballitol and put it back in the case. A few weeks later I pulled it out and again there was moisture/residue around it again. Wish I would have taken a picture but I wiped it again. Perhaps caused by some type of heat change around that spot?

PCP Rifle  SOLD SELLING Air Venturi Avenger .22 cal w/500cc Bottle Conversion and Power Plenum - The build that can do it all! PRICE DROP!

As it sits now, I’m at 150ish bar on the reg and getting roughly 45 FPE (shooting JTS 25.39s) by my guesstimate using pellet drop as an indicator (my chrony is not working so I’m not sure how accurate my readings are; I also further substantiated it by the readings other people have gotten after installing their power plenum). Camo wrapped for…well camo and plus it looks cooler. It’s pretty darn accurate at 50 yards (5 shot group pictured below and not even using 25 grains…that was with OLD 21 grain Beeman Kodiaks). It’s not ridiculously heavy…I was able to carry it all day while hunting with no sling. However, I would rather carry something a little less front heavy.

Shot count with it is ridiculous given it’s a 500cc bottle. I have not counted it…but it’s a lot at 45 F.P.E.! It feels like a Dreamline, except it’s cheaper than a dreamline while maintaining same performance.

I have also done modifications to the transfer port (made it bigger). Polished the barrel. Added power plenum + 500cc bottle (fill to 3625 PSI or 250 bar). Please note that although it is currently at 2200 PSI, the rifle is regulated up to 2900 PSI if you decide to push heavier projectiles. I highly recommend sticking to the 25.39s and shooting them faster if you want more power (like 970-990 FPS). If you want to shoot 18.1 grains, I recommend 935 FPS and just back the hammer spring all the way out to see where it’s at.

It has a DONNYFL adapter with the extension to help hold the liner for better harmonics.

I AM including the saber tactical bottle clamp and the standard 180cc tubes. No scope or bipod.

Cost if you were to buy:

Rifle-$350
Doux Hajimoto Power Plenum-$55
Doux Hajimoto Bottle Adapter Conversion-$115
DonnyFL barrel extender + moderator thread-$45
Saber tactical bottle clamp-$70
500cc aluminum bottle-$100
Modifications-costs money if you’re not savvy
—————————————————————————————————
Total: $735+tax+modifications

$500 shipped PP F&F or Zelle + signature required upon delivery
Considering the fact that the Avenge-X bottled models are upwards of $730+ and tax on top, I’d say it’s a pretty fairly price.

Scope tube size, does it matter to you?

With all the different scopes out there today and endless combinations of FFP, SFP and tube sizes ranging from 40MM, 36MM, 34MM, 30MM, and 1.0". Which scope tube size do you prefer most for your air rifles?

The biggest I've had is a 34MM TRACT and as nice as it was it's too big for my taste or need. Maybe on a 1K yard PB it would be OK. But I've mainly bought 30MM and 1.0" scopes in the past,
and still have a 1.0" Sightron 4-16X42 and it's great scope. But I think I prefer the 30MM tube scopes the best, currently have two, a Athlon and a SWFA SS.

I'm thinking I'll add another 30MM scope in the near future and that should hold me for awhile.

What's your favorite scope tube size and power combination?

Guns with the "happy switch"

I've always been a fan of weapons/guns with a happy switch. I currently have two, a WW2 Thompson M1A1 in .45ACP and a Colt M4 SBR in .223. Love em' but they are just toooo expensive to take out and play with nowadays. I've been looking around for an alternative (that's how I landed here). I had no idea of the advances bb/pellet guns have made over the years. Hence my question .......What is the opinion of you all in the know, regarding the Barra 400E ??? Alpha33

Airgun Technologies  Uragan 2 Valve Sealed with an FX Impact

I needed to make some reg adjustments on this new Uragan I picked up and despite my fear of the gun not filling again from 0 bar, I pulled the reg, opened it up about 2 hours (1/6 turn), put it back together and what do ya know, it wouldn't fill. My son was so ready to go shoot the next day so I spent from 6pm to 12pm firing the gun while filling and bumping the butt on the table trying to get that dam valve to seal. Nothing worked. I was so pissed I was slamming the butt into the workbench. Nothing worked.

What I really needed was a tank to get a quick blast of high pressure air in there. So I figured I would try 100 PSI from my garage compressor. I dug through drawers and found enough fittings to go from a 1/4 foster to 1/4 NPT > 1/4 NPT tp 1/8 NPT adapter > 1/8 NPT to M10 x 1 adapter > Chinese HP host > M10 x 1 quick disconnect > fill probe. The setup was a frankenstein of fittings. I blasted 100 PSI of air in there while butt bumping and firing the gun to no avail. So I guess I was screwed until I get a scuba tank with 300 bar in it which I don't have.

I ended up getting that stupid valve to finally seal and take on air in the most asinine manner. I pulled the bottle off of my Impact M3 and then removed the foster fill nipple. I pulled the valve piston from the fill nipple so it would just shoot air through it both ways and installed it back in the Impact. Then, i connected the Impact to the Uragan with a spare hose and screwed my 300 bar bottle back onto the Impact. WHOALA! :D That stupid Uragan valve sealed! What a #$#@^%% nightmare tonight has been.

Thank god my 1/6 turn adjustment was spitting slugs out at 956 FPS because I'm not degassing this dam gun EVER again. :ROFLMAO:

FX  Impact Power plenum upgrade problem.

Looking for some help.
Having upgraded my Impact mk11 with a power plenum my understanding was that I could upgrade again to the 720cc plenum and power block with the simpler FX20845
Kit. Rather than the full kit for the mk1/mk11
FX20824

I bought the kit and all was going well until I noticed the front part of my old pp is smaller and won't fit the new larger plenum.
Anyone else encounter this problem?
Can I just get the one part to make this kit work?

Rabbit on a snowy afternoon (Finally!)

I have been hoping to get a rabbit here for the past two years. I see a bunch of them at the end of my driveway because there is perfect habitat for them to build their warrens. Unfortunately I can't hunt there because it's too close to the road.
I see them closer to my house but it's pretty rare, even more rare to see them when I have a gun(isn't that always the way, lol). It doesn't stop me from trying to find one though.
Today was no different in that sense but today I had one advantage, it's snowing!
So I waited until 1/2 before sunset to head out into the storm.
It's a pretty bad storm for around here but I spent the last two decades living in the White Mtns of NH, so it's no big deal to me.
I actually felt a little nostalgic for winter. I love being outside in a snow storm.
I was walking around looking for rabbits and not seeing any. I walked down into the woods just in case any squirrel was out for a last minute snack before settling in for the storm. No dice there either.
Not being one to give up easily, I retraced my steps.
At this point the snow was really starting to cover the ground.
As I was rounding the last corner of a copse of pine trees before heading inside I saw a dark lump in the woods.
I thought that's weird that looks just like a rabbit sculpture for gardens. Who would put a fake rabbit there?
I was so dumbfounded, I couldn't believe I was actually looking at a rabbit.
When my wits finally decided to come around I raised the rifle.
And then I quickly realized it was only 10' away. I'd need some pretty serious holdover and I have almost zero practice at that range.
I took a breath and took aim.
In the back of my mind I was still kind of thinking it was fake rabbit because, like rabbits do, it hadn't moved a muscle since I saw it.
I let out half a breath and took the shot.
It just flopped over. DRT
I was like damn, it was real! :ROFLMAO:
I knew my wife was going to be shocked I finally got one and also very happy that I did.
This poor guy will make a nice stew when she's done with it. Just in time for next weeks Arctic weather.

BRK Sniper XR .22 shooting 14.3gr CPHP

On a side note I picked up my deer pin today. The state gives them out for a successful deer hunt. I'm not a believer in luck but the pin might be spending some time on future rabbit hunts.

Gamo  Gamo Arrow review, internals, tuning, shot strings, etc

This review is for a Gamo Arrow .177 which I have shot every day for over a week, at least 1000 pellets through it.
Photos are at the end.

Out of the box performance

Out of the box you get 4 magazines (40 shots) in the 865-900 FPS range with crosman Premier 10.5 grains.
7-8 grains pellets will be over 1000 FPS, and will be innaccurate at this speed.

Build quality

On the outside everything is synthetic.
The receiver is entirely synthetics.

The metal screws which hold the left side receiver plate will screw into this synthetic/plastic.
Metal screws in plastic will not last very long.

The internal parts are also mostly synthetic, except for the hammer, hammer spring, bolt, etc.

The barrel shroud and the right side of the receiver seem to be one big piece of plastic.
It is impossible to remove the barrel without destroying the shroud, and making the rifle useless.

Two plastic straps hold the air tube attached to the shroud.
The valve is attached to the air tube and you can get them both out of the rifle without degassing.

The super smart guys at Airgun Depot call this plastic "high-quality, firearm-grade synthetics": https://www.airgundepot.com/gamo-arrow.html
I do not have firearms, but I doubt I would buy any if they were made like this.

Noise

Out of the box the rifle is reasonably quiet.
It is substantially more quiet than a Gamo Urban and slightly more quiet than a Umarex Notos.
With a weaker hammer spring (and lower power), the noise goes substantially down, enough to make it backyard friendly.

Internals and partial disassembly

The disassembly involves:
-remove the 2 stock screws
-remove the stock
-remove the 4 small receiver screws,
Hold the receiver plate because it can pop out.
-remove the receiver plate
Do the reassembly in reverse order.
Internal photos are attached.

Do not shoot the airgun disassembled because the 2 plastic straps holding the air tube will detach, and some screws will fall out :).

Tuning

The main tuning involves changing the hammer spring, since there is no hammer spring adjustment.
The original hammer spring dimensions are: 1.1-1.2mm wire, 11.5mm outer diameter, 67.5mm length

For my hammer springs I have used this: https://www.aliexpress.us/item/2255800219014836.html
I have made 2 springs:
-52-53mm long for lighter pellets
-62-63mm long for heavier pellets (Crosman 10.5 grains)

When cutting the hamnmer springs the maximum velocity with Crosman 10.5 grains was around 960-965 FPS which gives about 21.5 FPE.
If you want more power you will probably have to drill out the transfer port.

Another option (if you have a lathe) is to make your own transfer sleeve/port with different diameters.

Shot strings

Stock hammer spring
865-900 FPS for 40 shots starting at 3400 PSI with Crosman Premier 10.5 grains

62-63mm hammer spring
895-930 FPS for 40 shots starting at 4000 PSI, with Crosman Premier 10.5 grains

52-53mm spring
870-905 FPS for 40 shots starting from about 3100 PSI with Norma domed 9.1 grains
895-930 FPS for 40 shots starting from about 3100 PSI with Norma domed 8.4 grains
915-950 FPS for 40 shots starting from about 3100 PSI with CPHP 7.9 grains

Accuracy

I have tried 4 pellets: Crosman domed 10.5 grains, Norma domed 9.1 grains, Norma domed 8.4 grains, CPHP 7.9 grains.
At 17-18 yards I could get about 0.5" groups with the Norma pellets.
I tried to shoot past 30 yards at various targets and could rarely hit them.
So accuracy may be acceptable (not great) at a shorter range, under 30 yards.
The barrel cannot be removed (without destroying the shroud and attached receiver), so accuracy cannot be improved by recrowning, etc

Similar airguns

Gamo Arrow retails around $220.
Compare the Gamo Arrow to the Beeman offerings (Chief 2 Plus, underlever 1357/1358, Crosman Icon etc).
For about the same price as the Arrow, the Beeman PCPs have a solid build and good to great accuracy.
The only thing that is better for the Arrow is the shot string which is due to the excellent BSA valve.

Other reviews

Troy Hammer's reviews

Tom Gaylord's review

Airgun Depot review (they obviously want to sell this)

There are several youtube reviews which are usually paid and are a combination of clueless and promoting.

Positives

Excellent shot strings, 40+ shots (4 magazines) with a 30-35 FPS spread.
The Gamo Arrow uses the same (or similar) valve as the BSA air guns (Urban, Buccaneer, etc) which explains the shot strings.

3 years Gamo warranty

Relatively low noise

Cheap magazines

The Arrow uses the same magazines as the Gamo Swarm Gen 1.
The magazines cost less than $15, usually around $12-$14.

Negatives

Accuracy which is acceptable, not great.

Build quality reminding of Crosman/Daisy multi-pumps (Daisy 880, Crosman Legacy, etc).

The cocking bolt/arrow sometimes blows slightly open when shooting which will lose velocity and make lots of noise.
Even after many pellets I kept having this issue.
This is clearly a poor design.

The Foster nipple is located in a very tight spot.
You can use only 2 fingers to attach the fill hose female Foster to it, which makes it pretty hard.

Conclusion

After 8 days and over 1000 pellets I decided I had enough and sent the Gamo Arrow back to the store.
