Traditional Rifle  NLA Pair Of IZH 61's *lowered last time*

Got a couple IZH 61's I'd like to offload as a package deal.

First is a plastic receiver 61 that has been converted to a PCP... Yep. Springer converted to PCP. Includes fill probe as well as what I believe is the full box of parts to convert this back to a springer. Purchased conversion kit from a fellow in Russia years ago. Chronies at 500fps with 8.44 gr. Fill probe is a little fiddle as well as cocking. Fill probe could stand new o rings. Had been holding at 120ish bar for years. It may have leaked down to that or I could have just stored it at that pressure. Unknown.

Next is a steel receiver 61 unmolested as far as I know.
Chronies at 430fps with 8.44gr

As with the other ad, I cannot speak to accuracy on either, except from memory. I've not shot them in years save for the quick chrony testing just prior to posting. I recall of no accuracy issues with either. Each includes one clip.

Would like to sell this as a package deal for both guns, as well as the box of bits to convert back.

AEA  AEA AKA YAJ

AEA also known as YAJ (Yet Another Jam).

My AEA (whatever that stands for) had yet another jam, after the many jams I had before.

A design is deeply flawed if a bad magazine will make your trigger fail.
A failing trigger will put holes in the places you least expect (like a window).
If you are lucky it is only a window.

And that is what happened again today to me.

My AEA HP SS had many trigger failures in since I acquired it 1-2 months ago.
Today I realized that there is a trigger failure quickly, since I had plenty of experience,

I went in a safe place,
removed the stock,
got my forceps (a tool used by doctors) and picked up the pellet stuck behind the trigger.

If you want to deal with that, go buy an AEA airgun.

FX  .25 FX King Initial Set-up & Pellet Test Complete - Ready for long range testing and set-up

I spent most of the last two days working on my .25 FX King, setting it up and testing 10 different slugs across two velocity platforms. Some will be critical because this initial testing was only completed on my 18 yard indoor range, but my experience over the last couple of decades is that if I can't get the combination to shoot sub MOA at 18 yards (.18"), it certainly won't shoot sub MOA at 100 yards. By eliminating wind, lighting, temperature, and other variables, I have never failed to come really close to the ideal regulator, velocity, and ammo combination using the indoor close range set-up, and then fine tuning once I get outside and apply to longer yardages.

The .25 King came in from Utah Airguns with the reg pressure not even up to 130. It was shooting the 33.95 gr pellet at about 920. As referenced below, I boosted the initial slug test reg pressure to about 139, setting the macro setting at 23, and the micro setting at just over 3. The test results can be seen below, with the H&N Heavy Slugs in .249 shooting the tightest 10 shot group averages.

I then boosted the Reg pressure to 150, and set the micro setting up to just under 3 1/2 and shot the 33/34 grain slugs, boosting the micro setting to about 3 3/4 for the slugs >34.5 grains.

All of the results can be seen below. It is really interesting to see which slugs had the groups open up, and which ones the groups tightened up with the velocity increase.

My plan is to leave the rifle set-up as is, and as the next step, test the four slugs shooting the tightest two 10 shot group averages at the longest distance available to me, which is just over 84 yards. Once I determine which one performs the best (shoots the tightest 10 shot groups) at the longer distance, I will set-up my dope chart and lock in my scope adjustments for that particular slug combination, after I play with the velocities for that combination a little more, to be certain I have it optimized.

For those interested, the last test I did today was to see how many shots I could get before it fell off the regulator, starting with a 250 BAR fill. It dropped off the reg on shot #30. I can live with that given the power output I am getting.

Also, I was really impressed with the appearance and packaging of the Alteros slugs. Not being a hollow point, I don't what the terminal effect difference will be on game, but they are certainly pleasing to the eye to look at and extremely consistent in appearance and performance.

I will report back with the 84 yard test results once time and weather permit. Given winter is starting to make its presence known, it may be a while before conditions are right.

25" barrel ( TJ 3g ) shooting some H&N 25g slugs.
3K bottle fill ( 500cc )
Reg at 1700 psi
Average speed 960 fps for @51+ Ft lbs  Pretty healthy !!
It made 82 shots before coming off reg.

Sadly w/o Lloyd Sykes efficiency calculator being on line any longer ... No idea where the efficiency number crunch
If anyone can crunch the numbers ? ... Thank You in advance.

Traditional Pistol  NLA A Few Crosman 13xx Builds *Prices Lowered last time*

Got a few old school Crosman 13xx builds I'd like to offload.

First up is a hodgepodge of parts. 1377 with B50 .177 Barrel, Crosman Steel Breech, Ralph Brown grips and stock insert. Unknown maker adjustable piston. Could use a going over. The o ring for the bolt is improperly sized and for whatever reason, I used some dental floss under it and a 'tag' sticks out. Get a proper sized o ring. Holds air and chronies at 610fps with 8.44gr on 10 pumps.

Finally is another 1377 converted to .22 with a Crosman Steel Breech, Ralph Brown grips, a QB7x rear site, some sort of brake with a front site (not a moderator), and adjustable flat top piston that needs o rings. Steel pins with e clips at the pivot. Currently chronies at 385fps using 16gr at 10 pumps.

I cant speak to the accuracy on any of these as it's been years since I've done anything with them save for the quick chrony shots prior to this add. Chrony numbers are an average of three shots. All have been modded years ago so who knows what's been done. Some have trigger shoes as shown. Ralph Brown is gone unfortunately so these grips are unobtainable except used.

May be open to an interesting trade, never hurts to ask.
Also, with the green one is a stock that fell over and broke at the grip... I never tried to repair it and instead got the insert.. but I'll include the broken stock as well as the one pictured. If you can fix it, good on you!

Porous Moderator Design Tests

Yesterday at this post we started kicking around this idea. So I made one and tested it.
Not bad. 😉

Here is the audio, stripped and set up for comparison, three shots bare, three shots unwrapped and three shots wrapped.

Here is the graph of that audio. I cut the graph off at 10 kHz. It lets us see what is going on better at the lower end of the spectrum.

65 gal pickle barrels and FT/EFT targets

Time to put on your thinking caps
I’ve got 10 each 65 gal heavy duty barrels
Plan is for two different types of target / pellet backstops:

#1 saw in half - create two half shells with large cut outs so I can put them over FT / HFT targets to minimize ricochet and also achieve sound reduction. - fishing for ideas

#2 Entire barrel standing upright and filled with rubber mulch or? This will be used to mount a splatter burst or other paper target on the front so I can slam .25 or .30 leads out to 100 yards w/o annoying my neighbors - so quiet is paramount - also fishing for ideas

Pics helpful as I’m a visual learner
Bonus is lead capture for reuse and recycling etc

N/A  Dual Use PCP

Am looking to buy my first PCP to shoot HFT and, if possible, try benchrest. I understand that dual purpose guns are a compromise at best, but would be interested in seeing what might be available. .177 predominates in HFT, is it suitable for benchrest or is .22 preferable?Or am I better off buying a discipline specific gun. If I were to buy one specific for HFT (I like the wood stock and traditional looks) it would be a Daystate Revere. Thanks, Tom

FX  FX 380mm barrel...... much louder?

Hello , I would like to put a 380mm barrel on my FX Crown , instead of the 500mm installed. I wonder how the noise will be increased ; is it a big difference between the 380mm and the 500mm in .30 cal , shooting at the same power. At the same time I think that the shorter barrel must be stiffer and could support a heavier moderator ?
Thanks.

AS OTHERS HAVE SAID ABOUT SELLING THEIR PB'S

I've been noticing that I'm not the only one who's sold their PB's, BTY I never knew what PB meant till this site. I also sold most of my PB because I never shoot them because I have no place to shoot them unless I drive up into the mountains. It's just as much fun shooting my pellet guns, .177 to .50 cal here at home.

Case closed. :)

My experience Barrel Lapping and what I’d do differently next time

Hello Friends,

I just wanted to share my experience performing a barrel lap on my Western Airguns Rattler .357.

Equipment used:

  • Tipton Ultra Gun Vise
  • J Dewey .30 Nylon coated 36” rod
  • J Dewey .30 cotton bore mops (lap compound)
  • J Dewey .357/9mm bore tips (cleaning)
  • Dewey Universal Patch Loop
  • LGBA - Converts .30 & .35 cal. Rods to accept 8/32 brushes
  • No name cotton swabs
  • Wooden dowel from Ace hardware
  • JB non embedding bore compound
  • JB bore bright
  • Frog Lube Super Degreaser (Solvent)
  • Frog Lube Paste (CLP)
IMG_6846.jpeg

I had removed my barrel and placed it in the vise. Cleaned it extremely well with patches using frog lube degreaser. Having only shot it once : ( and it being a PCP it didn’t need penetrating oil. I mention this because in all the tutorials I watched it appears Kroil is routinely used..

I was in a bit of a tough situation though. The moderator was attached with blue loctite and I live in a small apartment in the city with no good ventilation and nearly no workspace. I decided I’d leave it on instead of busting out a blow torch. This proved to be fine, although likely a foolish decision simply due to making things more complicated than they needed to be and overestimating the hassle/difficulty in removing it. Once it was sufficiently clean, I measured a piece of dowel so that when everything was positioned against the wall it would extend through the suppressor and slightly into the barrel to prevent the brush from accidentally exiting the barrel and damaging the crown.

I measured the total distance to the end of the dowel which came to 27”. I took some painters tape and marked 9” and 18” on the Dewey rod.

I started by applying a heavy dose of JB bore compound onto a .30 mop and proceeded to perform 33 back and forth strokes to the 9” marker watching to ensure the rod was rotating with the rifling and attempting to keep it somewhat centered. There was some resistance, but not a lot.

Almost immediately the bore mop darkened. I continued until I reached 33 strokes, at which point I applied more jb’s to the mop, removed the 9” indicator and performed another 33 strokes, this time extending to the 18” indicator. I removed the mop completely half way through, and rotated it 180 degrees before reinserting it knowing my Dewey rod had a slight bend. Upon completion, I applied more compound, removed the 18” painters tape marker on the rod and performed another 33 strokes, this time just going from breach all the way to the end where I hit the dowel.
IMG_6848.jpeg

I then performed standard cleaning alternating with dry patches and degreaser patches until they came out clear. I took a video with a borescope to document the change after each step of the process.

Next up was the bore bright. This time I decided (due to it being less abrasive), I was going to do full length passes for every stroke. I set it up, same as before with the dowel blocking me from accidentally exiting the barrelI and damaging the crown. I did 60 strokes and then just like before, cleaned the barrel, alternating wet and dry.

I immediately noticed a difference where the patches moved much more smoothly through nearly the entire barrel until they approached the crown where I hadn’t done any polishing.

Again, I took a video to document the change.

Finally I applied Frog Lube paste to the inside of the barrel. Somewhat interestingly, even though I’d thought I cleaned the barrel really well already, it appeared there was still dirt and grime that was only removed when using the paste.

I cleaned until dry and again took a video.

Here’s what I would’ve changed:
  1. I would’ve purchased bore mops that were specifically designed for 9mm/.357. Unless I’m missing something, the lapping occurs roughly in the same way filing a piece of wood or metal works. It abrades the surface using progressively finer grit to smooth the surface. But in order to do this, pressure must be applied. Simply because a smaller bore mop could be used to clean, doesn’t make it a good tool to lap. High pressure is likely needed to improve results so I would’ve gone with a larger diameter mop. It also probably does a poor job of getting to polish the grooves.
  2. I would scrap the x strokes to this point of the barrel, then y to this point, z to this point and just do full length strokes. I fail to see why (if performed correctly) doing less near the crown would somehow produce better results.
  3. Check out the videos/pics to see the results : )

Thanks for your time friends! Happy to hear anyone else’s thoughts/experiences as I’m about to perform this process again on two of my Leshiy 2 barrels.

Western Airguns  Warning in max preassure in bottle with sidewinder .30

When my Sidewinder arrived it was shooting JSB 44.7 grain at 80 fpe. That was with regulator set at 140 bar.

I was happy.

Later on I decided to fill the bottle below the 300 bar advertised as maximum, but above 250 bar. I went to 275 bar.

Then I decided to try lower power and went to 630 fps. Then I tried to give it back to 80 fpe..... And did not went up above 820 fps !!!!

Yesterday I decided to bring a little bit up the regulator to 165 bar. I got only 828 fps..... No matter how much I tried to adjust it. I return it to the 828 fps.

This morning with the bottle got to 250 bar, the rifle gave me 975 fps.....

My conclusion: the valve gets partially locked with preassure on that bottle above 250 bar. That is confirmed to happen on my Vulcan 3 .30 Cal.

So..... Better not to fill the bottle of the sidewinder.30 Cal above 250 bar.
