Resources  Reticle Choices for field target

Ok ok, been piddling around with different scopes on different HFT platforms for a long while now; I need a reality check from the wisdom gallery.
To date my five favorite scopes are:
in order of “my“ happiness:

#1) Sightron S3 10-50x60FT, SFP, MOA-H reticle, HFT x2, HFT specific

#2) Athlon Helos BTR Gen 2, 6-24x56 FFP
APRS6 reticle MRAD 1/10 mil EFT specific .25 rig

#3) Athlon Helos BTR Gen 2, 4-20x50 FFP
APRS6 reticle MRAD 1/10 mil

#4) Element Titan 3-18x50 FFP
APR2D reticle FFP MRAD 1/10 mil

#5) Sightron S-tac 4-20x50 FFP, MRAD, MH4 reticle 1/10 mil (Hft pistols specific)

I’m torn by choosing #1 and #3 as my primary and permanent HFT scopes because #1 ranges the best but the reticle requires i guesstimate some holdovers because it lacks sufficient numbering markers Between zero and 1. This affects my 21-29 yards and 31-39 yard Shots.
I really like the Element Titan too because it spreads the numbers out 270 degrees on my wheel. #5, the s-tacs are fairly compact but also lack some useful holdover markings.
Athlons like the Element have Christmas tree reticles thus more holdover details.

Out of the darkness

Much more philosophical than precision, I always feel a spiritual uplift when the days become noticeably longer, even just a bit. Just getting out of that Dec21-Feb 21 stretch , "the dark time" just begins to give me a general uplift. I know I'm 6 weeks and a wake up from exiting another butt crack time of the year. Does a body and mind good!

Epic  Epic Two Initial Thoughts

Picked up a gently used Epic Two on trade a few weeks ago and thought I’d post a quick review. It’s a 550mm .25 with a bottle.

I had some initial trouble with it that turned out to be not really a big deal. When the seller shipped it to me he degassed the gun completely. When I got it and tried to fill it, it was leaking from the valve (through the barrel). I took everything apart, checked the o-rings, lubed, put it back together and same problem.

So I reached out to Epic and David (who I think is the owner) was incredibly helpful and after a couple emails he said he was just going to send me a new valve. When the valve arrived I replaced it and……….same issue.

David was stumped and I was considering sending it to Edgun West to have them look at it. So I called Edgun and learned that because the gun has a balanced valve, it sometimes needs a little help seating the valve if the gun was completely degassed. They told me to hit it with a decent burst of air from a SCBA and mortar the buttstock on the ground. I did, and it sealed up perfectly.

Although there was an issue, I have to say that David at Epic was excellent helping me get things figured out.

Once I got it filled up, I took it out to shoot and I was impressed. The consistency, efficiency, and accuracy are fantastic. Getting 10 shot standard deviations of less than 1 and just over 1 for a 30 shot string. I haven’t tested shot count yet, but I started at 275 bar this morning, shot about 100 pellets and finished at about 150 bar.

With the reg set at 103 bar, it’s shooting 25 gr AEA pellets at 950 and 33 gr. AEA pellets at 850 fps. Some pictures of groups below.

All in all I’m super happy with the gun. The trigger is really nice and very adjustable; I just haven’t found the sweet spot for my liking yet. I need to play with it some more. My only gripe so far is the weight (she’s a pig).

I don’t post many reviews like this, but wanted to post in case someone else is dealing with the valve issue I did.

FWB  FWB300S curious question

Today I had a chance to setup and shoot a new to me 10 meter FWB 300 S. Tyrolene.
I installed an inexpensive Discovery 3-12 scope on it.
I was shooting JSB 8.44’s. @ approx 560 FPS.
Although a 10 meter gun, I zeroed it at 25 yards.
What surprised me was when I returned my target to 10 meters it was still hitting my bullseye or zero???
normally when I zero a gun at 25 yards and then shoot at a 10 meter target it will be aprox 2” low depending on my scope height.
Last line edited:
any thoughts on why the two intersecting points had the same zero @ 10-25 yards??

Benjamin  Show Me The Benjamins

From Airgun Revisions , both 22s both look new.

But just put a Arken on Kratos filled to 3k put some

H&N field target trophies 14.66 in ( which are my throwaways now)

quick sight in and wow I like it . Surprisingly quiet without any

moderator. Small one hole groups ( only 13 yards), light weight

Daystate  Delta wolf Performance leaking

Today my Delta wolf .177 fac performance bought in december 2024 started to leak trough the transfer port.
I have been shooting around 200 shots with it.

I have changed the o-rings on the valve pin and re-lubed the valve. But it didnt solve the leaking.

Can anyone tell me what to look for? I suspect a bad valve but everything looks good when I inspect it.

These o-rings are changed

I suspect the valve sealing might be the problem, but it looks good. The seating also looks good

Any ideas?

Which YouTubers give negative reviews?

I'm looking to find some airgun reviewers on YouTube that don't always paint every product in a good light. Someone that gives you the cons as well as the pros, warts and all. That's a person I can trust, as opposed to someone who just has a business promoting products.

Thanks in advance for your recommendations!

Guess the gun…

I got bored today and decided that it’s time for another round of gun vs. gun… the pic has 9 horizontal lines of 3 5 shot groups each (two lines have only 2 groups cause I ran out of light and/or the specific ammo…). Here’s what I suit and I. The order I shot it (experience shows I loose focus when shooting group after group so the later I shot it the more handicapped the gun is - by me…). Obviously this is not the order of the groups:

A. .22 Wildcat compact 18gr AEA
B. .25 Vet 2 25gr AEA
C. .22 Dreamline classic 18gr AEA
D. .25 Impact M4 34gr AEA
E. .25 P3 34gr AEA
F. .22 Red Wolf 22gr AEA
G. .22 Wildcat HN 21gr slug
H. .22 Ghost 22gr AEA
I. .22 wildcat 15gr Hades

45yards, 7mph wind with 18mph (not kph…) gusts (which I tried to wait out but yeah…). Wanna guess which gun is which?

Edit: Solution in comment #23 on the 2nd page.

slugs for short distance ratting?

hi all,
Just a question on ammo for ratting: So far I only used slugs for longer distance because of their favorable BC. And I was looking for hunting pellets (hades, ultrashock etc) for shorter distance ratting.
But how does a hollow point slug do? Does it make a comparable damage to a hunting pellet trough mushrooming, or do hunting pellets still hold an edge for this use? Does a slug have a higher probability of passing trough?

Wildcat results

I purchased my FX Wildcat a couple months ago and have been enjoying it since I bought it. Actually this is my 3rd Wildcat. The first was a .22 gen 2 compact I eventually gave to my son. The second was a M3 sniper .25 I traded in for the M3 Impact. All 3 have come from the factory with phenomenal performance straight out of the box. I really missed my Compact Wildcat, so I decided to get another. When I say phenomenal this is what im talking about. As much as I'd like to take credit for the tune I haven't touched the settings on this gun. It shoots dime size groups @ 50 yards when the wind Gods are favoring me. 23.jpg This is a magazine (18) The chrono didn't record 1 shot. I get 3 mags(54) shots on a 225 bar fill on reg. .22cal 18gr JSBs

Daystate  Daystate Huntsman Midas MKI

Here’s a little old school cool to show off. This is a Huntsman Midas MKI in .22 that was made from 1983 to 1992. It has a fill pressure of 3k psi, but to operate in the "sweet spot”, I fill to 2300 psi. I get about 50 good shots in the 15 ft. lb. range. I believe these first Daystates used BSA barrels which are pretty dang good. I hadn’t shot this for quite awhile, but I think I’ll put it back into rotation for a bit. I just need to figure out which scope I want to use.

My regulator gauges failed and oil is everywhere

I use this gauge assembly when I want to shoot tethered to one of my tanks. Today I discovered the cap that keeps the oil inside had come off of both gauges and the oil was all over the regulator and a bunch of other stuff that I kept stored in the same drawer. Do you think any oil seeping into the regulator would affect it's performance? Are gauges typically filled with mineral oil, and all I need to do is fill them back up enough to cover the gauge needles?

HW/Weihrauch  More "Easter egg" peeps...

More gadgeteering from the dark recesses of accumulated stuff...and my sketchy old memory.

Back in the day, Robert Law at Air Rifle Headquarters in WV commissioned Williams to make airgun-specific peep sights. These were similar to today's FP and GR series, but with fixed mounting rails mating with each brand's dovetail spacing. They are secured by setscrews on top, to snug the sight up tight against the grooves.

This is the "ARH 624," a sporting peep sight (Weihrauchs had wider 13mm grooves back then, so the ARH peeps are a rare alternative to HW's own match diopter of the day). Seen here on an old HW 30:
IMG_6195.jpeg

And here on a vintage HW 50 is the "ARH 834T," the target version of the same sight, adding finger-knob adjusters and a taller elevation arm.
IMG_6196.jpeg

Next, a challenge - a BSF S54 Match underlever. This eccentric design has: A) relatively low front sight; B) barrel set below the top of the receiver; and C) high rail for the rear sight...so any rear-mounted sight must adjust VERY low. BSF's match diopter works of course, but is fragile, adjusts coarsely, and doesn't take German eyepieces! ARH also had custom Williams sights for BSF barrel-cockers, but they won't go low enough for the S54. The one sight that WILL go low enough is the current FP-GR, but its tall elevation arm strikes the gun's wood (note: the FP-GR may work as-is for those versions of the S54 with narrower stocks).
IMG_6194.jpeg

The solution was a mix'n'match. The base is from a brand new FP-GR, with the shorter top from an "ARH 833T." A tidy setup, with the bonus of better precision than the OEM sight.
IMG_6198.jpeg

And a surprise bonus...the other half of each sight was not wasted. The 833T's rails are about 11mm, so its base plus the FP-GR's top gives a 1980-vintage HW 35E (with 22-inch barrel) a sight radius that's almost silly.
IMG_6197.jpeg

Here is the whole motley old crew with their new "eyes," ha. :D
