Why El Cheapo compressors are no bargain

Lots of users don't realize the amount of energy in high pressure air and how it stresses a compressor. When I was first starting out in PCPs I learned my lesson by not following proper procedure when filling a rifle. I pulled out the fill probe after filling to 200 bar without first opening the bleed valve on the tank. The tiny amount of pressurized air in the microbore hose sounded like a gun shot. It was a lesson never forgotten and gave me an instant appreciation of the energy in high pressure air.

Box compressors selling at similar prices as name brand hand pumps are not durable or reliable. These oilless box compressors can only be built economically in China where labor is cheap, liability is not a cost of doing business, and repairs are impractical due to shipping expense. The metallurgy of these box compressors is substandard for the amount of stress they endure. Leaks are common and failures are inevitable. It's like expecting a VW beetle to tow a boat trailer. It might for a time or two but it will break down quickly as it's not built for the task.

There should be a separate forum for these repetitive posts. It seems that 75% of questions asked on this forum are from people asking 1) What's the best budget compressor? 2) My budget compressor is broken. How do I fix it?

These questions are asked ad nauseum on this forum. My reply is as follows.

Please use the search function as this has been asked a million times already. If you read this forum you will see many posts with the same question.

Moral of the story. You get what you pay for. An oilless box compressor is "plug and pray" and a waste of money. Owners spend more time repairing them than filling with them.

FX  fx bottle valve threads wearing.

i have a question about the threads in the bottle valve.
I've taken this bottle off 3 times and the 4th was a day ago when i swapped to the 700mm barrel.
i don't put any kind of lube on the threads although I've been tempted to put maybe high-pressure moly grease
or maybe some copper never seize? i usually just wipe the threads clean with a microfiber cloth and use a q tip to clean the bottle valve threads.
I'm thinking i will have to replace both the nipple on the gun and that valve in the bottle as going back on the 4th time it felt like it started to bind a little. also. like to take the tank off with 150 bar or less just makes sense to me that it takes stress off the threads if I'm thinking correctly.
should there be some lube on the threads? anyone else run into this?
all i can picture is unscrewing the tank and the threads stripping out. seems like the bottle valve threads are wearing more so than the nipple on the gun
is there a lube to prevent this from happening again or maybe one of those stainless bottle valves utah sells air Marksman?

Tuning  Best slug transfer port style?

To those who fit their own barrels, what's your preferred way of doing the transfer port. I've drilled many but seems as I play more with slugs this is what I want to try. It seems the easiest for me with a very small manual milling machine. It will take a little longer for me to clean the lead-in to prevent shaving of the slug during loading but it seems to maximize the airflow regardless of the valve to barrel port size. I'm always open to better ways and this way may even help someone else so hopefully it's a win-win. Definitely need to give the credit to RTI which is where I got the idea from.

Second raccoon

A few minutes ago, less than an hour before sunset, I saw something going down the shore line behind my house. I was hoping it was a muskrat that has chewed some of the floats under my dock but it was this 8 lb 5 ounce raccoon. My dog found it first and wanted to attack it. She's almost 40 lbs but I don't want vet bills. I shot it between the eyes with a 34 grain jsb pellet going a little under 800 fps. Raccoon dropped immediately but Cola, my dog shook it while it twitched. The last one was similar in size and took 3 hits from my 32 fpe P35-22 but the one that put it down was a shot between the eyes.

Should I skin it? I didn't mess with the last one because it showed up in the middle of the day and I thought it might have rabies. I think this one is healthy but tanning skins is a bit of work. I guess I could be like Jerry Jones (Cowboys owner) and eat it.

Dead Shoebox New GX CS4=-i

I rebuilt an F8 Shoebox about three years ago and it has given great service in topping off tanks ever since. Sadly, it failed a few days ago. I think I have another rebuild kit squirreled away somewhere and I will try to resurrect the F8 once again.

Since I need a compressor right now, I bought a new GX CS4-i which should arrive next week. So far, so good. However, the Shoebox has spoiled me regarding water removal. The 125 psi external first stage condenses out a a lot of moisture in the form of liquid water and a large low-pressure indicating bead desiccator between the first stage and the Shoebox does a great job of delivering dry air to the Shoebox itself.

So I have two questions. First does the CS4-i have any mechanism to purge liquid water from the compressor? And second, what constitutes a competent high pressure water separator/ output filter for the CS4-i? I've read a lot of posts on the subject of high pressure water separators/output filters and I believe that one of the $75.00 molecular sieve "Gold" filters will serve the purpose if the CS4-I has some means to purge liquid water. I appreciate any and all advice.

PCP Rifle  SOLD Taipan Veteran 2, .25, 700MM Barrel - Grey Laminate - Lots of Added Pictures - $1200

I bought this Taipan Veteran 2 Standard in .25 from Utah Airguns on September 8th this year. It is the Grey Laminate Standard with 700mm barrel in .25 caliber with everything that came with the rifle, including the original box, manual, moderator, 2 magazines, and fill probe. Rifle is 36" OAL with Moderator attached.

This rifle is as all fans of Taipan say they are; well built, super accurate, wonderful trigger, and powerful. I'm wanting to buy a Huben K1 in .25 and this is part of how I will. raise the cash. I just can't justify owning 3 PCPs (Ghost, Taipan, and Huben K1). There are no issues and have been no issues with this rifle. It holds air great, no leaks, etc.

The only mod I've made to this rifle from the Vendor settings is to correctly and cleanly install sling swivel studs. I had the barreled action out of the stock when I did this so they are perfectly and securely installed. Easy to remove if you don't want them.

The sling, scope, and sling swivels are not included, but of course the sling studs are.

I hobbled downstairs just now (knee surgery 9 days ago) and put three shots of Hades 26 grain pellets over the Gamin Chronograph. The picture is a bit blurry but the speeds were average of 154 (1054, 1053, and 1057)

In a couple of pictures you will see the side lever "missing". I temporarily removed it to take some measurements for my plans to make a walnut stock for the rifle.

I don't like selling this rifle, but my hankering for a semi-auto Huben K1 is too strong. :)

In this photo with the box and manual you can see the very tiny little pressure bump just forward of the top of the trigger and cocking handle. About half the size of little finger nail. It is very shallow and does not go deeper than surface finish.

FX  Had to share this one…..FX Royale 400 .22

All,

Just had to stop by and share this one. I have a soft spot for the older FX Smooth Twist guns (Boss, Royale) etc. and have owned and do own more than my fair share but this one is special.

FX Royale 400 .22 picked up here not long ago and had been sitting for a number of years. Had a well known FX guy (promised I wouldn’t name names) go through it top to bottom, Huma reg installed, resealed, cleaned up inside and out including the stock, trigger set perfectly, just taking the good and making it great.

This one has one of the nicest walnut stocks I have ever seen on a FX and tuned for 890 with the JSB 18.13 with the carbon fiber bottle it is light weight and just laughably accurate and what I believe is a Neil Clague moderator affixed it is damn near silent.

It is not often I refer to anything as perfect but this one is about as close as you can get in my opinion.

Anyways, just wanted to share an oldie but a goodie.

Some pics below that barely do it justice (be kind to an old iPhone 11 user who refuses to upgrade)

Merry Christmas,
Mike

High Pressure Pneumatics Pellet Packaging

Holy Cow! I ordered a dozen or so tins of pellets from them and the packaging must be seen to be believed. It took me a while to get into it.

BTW, they have/had a great sale on FX pellets, not sure if they have any stock left, but even if not, it's worth an order to see the packaging!

What's your favorite shot group you've had?

I've shot several near hole in hole groups over the years but this is by far my favorite. 2289 Crosman backpacker. Only 15 yards. Nothing ground breaking by any means but the way I got to capture it will probably always make it my favorite. Shooting an old hardwood pallet. Aiming at a knot in the wood. 3 shots and I stopped so I didn't ruin the group...lol

Not an expensive gun, no crazy long range, and a cheap Walmart scope but a memory that will last a lifetime.

Shot looks bad but wasn't

I took this one with my Prod this morning. It is shooting copper plated H&N FTT pellets about 750 fps at the muzzle. The squirrel was only about 10 yards away so I like the low scope of the Prod. It dropped immediately but when I picked it up and saw the guts hanging out I got a little worried about my placement. The pelleted entered behind the diaphragm but went forward stopping under the skin on top of the off side shoulder. It broke the shoulder on the way past. So right through the lungs and may have hit the heart. Good shot, not a lousy gut shot.

17 ounce male.
