Starting from Scratch - finding a home for an airgun activities related club

If you live in an air gun desert, meaning there really aren't any airgun friendly ranges within 2-3 hours, you are not alone.

Oddly, many traditional Rifle and Pistol ranges are not thrilled about airguns or airgun competitive events either.
This is partly because of a lack of understanding and partly because space is sometimes very limited and more variations in platforms means more competition for existing infrastructure.

In my particular location of Mobile, Al. there are 4 Rifle and Pistol and Skeet ranges within an hours drive of me. None of those 4 ranges offers any direct support for Aiguns or Archery but none of those ranges would complain if you joined and only showed up to shoot your airgun. Just expect a lot of stares and questions, which can be a good thing.

But

Of all these close in or nearby ranges, when i ask the owners or folks that run the place, if they would consider allowing me to set up a Field Target Courses or Bench Rest course utilizing Airgun only targets, i get a firm "no". May seem odd, but regardless of the reasoning, it is what it is.

So what's an airhead (the smart kind) going to do? First things first = don't give up.

Some VERY fortunate people live in locations where the STATE or Cities actually provide the land and infrastructure for these activities. If your state or city does not, they never will, unless, someone like YOU or a group of someones like US begin to organize in such a way as to be heard in a very positive way.... a way in which city and or state officials hear and see the benefits marksmanship programs like the CMP can provide for all age groups.

If your petitions to your Municipality officials fall on deaf ears your will have two other choices.

#1) You can find and convince a private land owner to give you permission to use their land; they might be okay with a couple of plinkers showing up once in awhile but they probably will not like it when 7-20 people show up to wage war on various paper and steel targets 3 times a week and esp on the weekends.

#2) We, as individuals or as a club / group must find, acquire and setup the infrastructure to support the sport we enjoy all by ourselves or by creating a group to share the expenses and work. Costs and legal issues associated with creating a Airgun range can seem daunting and may vary greatly from state to state from city to city or from county to county. Land acquisition is a big cost. location location location, and that location needs to be in an area where zoning laws or other administrative, environmental or sensitive neighboring issues try to stop you before you get started.

This is where i am now... doing it on my own. To date this is what i have learned:

A) If you and or your club are planning on buying or leasing your own land, you will ideally need between 6-16 acres for activities and buffer zones.
B) Your location will need to be away from growth tracts / suburbs or other developments that are ever expanding
C) Your location will also need to be in an environmentally suitable spot - not sensitive endangered wildlife species or wetlands.
D) You will need, road access, parking, power for compressors and seasonal lighting and at the least some solid way to LOCK your stuff up from bandits.
E) insurance... yep gotta have insurance.
F) you will need equipment to maintain the land or the shooting lanes / ranges and people and resources to help you maintain them as well.

I would love to hear from anyone who has gone down this road.
Some great ideas i have had include talking to 3D archery clubs as they have similar needs.
Within just the last week a forum member @shootermeb - gave me a great lead to a local gun club / range, that, lo and behold, was actually interested in talking with me!

Once you do find a club or person who is interested a letter of introduction is very helpful:

For the last 2 years I have been gathering ($20K worth) equipment and resources to create a competitive and recreational club and site for American Field Target programs along the Gulf Coast areas.

Field Target is an international sport that is growing very quickly in the United States.

American Field Target (AAFTA) use "precision air rifles" typically shooting pellets at 20 FPE or less and they shoot distances from 10 yards to 55 yards. https://www.aafta.org/organization.html

World Field Target (WFTF) typically shoots pellets at 12 FPE or less and they shoot distances from 10 yards to 55 yards. https://www.world-field-target-federation.org/

Extreme Field Target or Ultimate Field Target or Long Range Field Target shoot pellets up to 100 FPE and they shoot distances from 20 yards to 100 yards. https://extremefieldtarget.com/index.html#/

Airguns use H.P. Air and compressors, like paintball, but some also use spring pistons or CO2, and as a general rule they are fairly quiet.

Everyone that I have met, to date, that shoots Field Target, also shoots a powder burner / traditional rifle or pistol and may also enjoy Archery. In that regards I see the people who participate in Field Target as very compatible with any and all rifle and pistol and archery ranges.

Currently, I am looking for people and resources (gun clubs and archery clubs) who have similar needs to create places to set up courses for training and to hold competitive events.

A field target course is comprised of 10-15 lanes (like archery) but the knock down targets are placed 10 yards to 55 yards to 100 yards away and are reset using lines. A round or match is typically 60 shots.

Bench Rest 25 m and 50 m 75 m and 100 m are also events: https://www.usairriflebenchrest.com/

My secondary goal is to help create a local CMP Civilian Marksmanship Program like Huntsville AL. and Talladega AL. have. https://thecmp.org/ CMP’s often train Olympic athletes / shooters who many times get full ride scholarships to Universities.

Two years ago, I only had myself, but as of this year I have 6 members that come from Daphne, Fairhope, Pensacola and Mobile.
Please give me a call or Text #_________________________. I would love to meet with you and your group on a weekend and visit your facilities; and perhaps I could bring some of my equipment for you to experience the joy of Field Target first hand. I think you will discover we have very compatible sports / interests. I am also aware that infrastructure and insurance, is NOT cheap, thus cash flow is important to the success of any long term range / facility.

These other links will provide you with more insight into the world of Field Target and Olympic style shooting.

What Compressor Are You Using Top Off At 300B?

So I run the alkin which I love fills my scbas with ease. I have a few pcps in the lineup that I use at 300/310b and the scba gets close but I want a full top off. I have the xsciso which is was the better version of the cs3 when it came out that has the little oil coiling feature. It has done great but I think going from 275/280/290 range up to where I want to top of at 300B+ will eventually fail it's alot of work at that pressure. I was thinking of getting the CS4-I for this specific task but was wondering what suggestions you all have or use. Thank you for the info.

Does jts pellets only come in 250 per tin (22 cal) or what? No 500?

So trying to buy some pellets from prymaidair. I only see jts tins in 250 (22 cal). Are there no 500 count or what? So each tin is $11. Sure I can just buy 2 tins to make 500. But the thing is jsb and other brands they make 500 counts for $22. So when I add jsb 500 count ($22) in my cart for 3 tins, and 1 tin of jts 250 count (11), it will give me the jts 250 count for free instead of another jsb 500 count. This is stupid. Why doesn't jts have 500 counts so when I add in cart with jsb tins I will get another jst/jbs 500 count for free.

Skout  Indexing Your Barrel?

So before too long, and once the holiday ruckus is over; I'll begin setting up my new EVO. One of the features this gun has, that my other PCPs does not, is the easy barrel indexing feature. Now the question becomes "how to make proper use of it"?
Should one just center their scope, then indexing the barrels POI to closest point of natural center of the scope, and adjust the scope from there? Or, is there more to it?

PCP Rifle  NLA Airforce Condor .22

Airforce Condor .22. There is nothing wrong with this gun. The Talon Tunes Shroud has some cosmetic marks and was cut shorter to fit in a newer Escape UL but works exstremly well. It comes with a 4500psi regulated tank and the Talon Tunes shrowd. I will include a 300cc CF tank with another stock. It does not come with the scope or mount. The gun was set at its max power for these Chronograph shots. It can shoot from 600-934FPS with JSB 13 grain pellets depending on the power wheel setting. You can get dozens of shots with this tank. I will pay for shipping, and insurance with signature required. $550. PayPal friends and family only. In Conus lower 48 only.

Pellet and Slug storage

I got tired of my pellets and airgun ammo sitting in the closet or on the floor, so I used some of my time off for Thanksgiving to put up a cabinet to store everything in. This is a plywood cabinet from Home Depot with one extra added shelf and 5mm steel dowel pins in place of the plastic shelf clips.

Daystate  Revere mod question

I'm looking at putting my dreamline into an anschutz stock like the one below to make an open class silhouette gun. I have to make an adapter for the receiver and mill a couple slots into the stock for the side pressure gage and left port thumb wheel.

But i was also looking at the Daystate Revere. But I would need to purchase one before putting in so looking for a bit of info on the Revere
  1. What is the length of pull in the wooden Revere classic stock? (For use as a regular silhouette practice gun)
  2. Does the unregulated Revere have a smooth bottom? IE the regulated one has the regulator pressure gage on the bottom so I would have to mill an opening for that, if the unregulated one doesn't have that it would make the fit easier
  3. Does anyone have the width of the receiver?
Thanks!

AEA  So, aea? I'm going to do it anyway.

So even though I've seen as much bad as good about aea i think im going to gamble unless you can talk me out of it.
It's really hard to beat the power for the price and I'm nearly at poverty level funding so no need to recommend those things over 1k.
I do have some mechanical abilities and expecti I'll need to use them, hopefully later not sooner but it's expected with what I've read.

Umarex  Accuracy VS FPS consistency (Notos and Avenger)

Hello!

I have had an Air Venturi Avenger (Bullpup) for a while now, and have been reasonably happy with it (more below), but I recently purchased a Umarex Notos. It has some things I really like, but also seems to have an accuracy issue.

Notos - I love the size and weight. Additionally, the left cocking lever I find nice (I shoot lefty due to a left dominant eye). I'm impressed with the regulator, and am getting very good FPS consistency across the 21 or so shots. It is almost always +/- 1 or 2 FPS across the string (around 762 using CPHPs). The issue I am having is accuracy. Five shot groups at 25 yards are commonly 2" or more. I haven't done an exhaustive test of pellets, but multiple different types and manufacturers seem to more or less have the same issue. The best I have ever gotten is ~1" group, but with multiple on the 2.5-3" happen too. This is from bench rest (bags and a rear squeeze bag), with a 9x scope. I can pretty confidently say its not just me missing (I do fine with other pellet guns). Also, this is using the single pellet loading tray (because the magazine is surprisingly bad - I'll have to get aftermarket ones). It is also not just fliers causing the broad groups. Groups are usually shotgun pattern (e.g. near the center, 1" high and left, 1" low and right, 3/4" low left, etc.). I have reached out to Umarex customer support, but haven't heard back yet (probably understandable due to the weekend and time of year). I don't think I am being unreasonable expecting better groups at 25 yards (Umarex pellets are among the ones I tested, so they can't just blame the pellets :) ). Since the FPS are so consistent, does this suggest a barrel or crown issue? Did I get a lemon? (most people seem to rave about the accuracy)

Avenger Bullpup - As I mentioned, I am generally happy with my Avenger. I can't rave about it being a tack driver, but I've found a point where it is acceptable. I've settled on 2000psi on the regulator and two turns of the hammer spring for CPHP. This gives me around 925 FPS, and 10 shot groups at 25 yards that are generally touching (the CPHP sometimes give a flier, but most in a group). Not a "single ragged hole" that some people boast, but often a single large hole about the size of a quarter. I'd like it to be better, but I've settled for that using CPHPs (yes I could get better pellets, but I like getting them locally for cheap). I've tried other pellets, without really significant improvements (except for not having a random flier). I have been a bit disappointed with the regulator of the Avenger though. FPS have a much broader range that I expected. If I shoot a 10 shot group (3-5 sec between shots), the FPS at the best of times the spread is 10-15. It is nowhere as consistent in FPS as the Notos. Additionally, in between magazines (when there might be a few minute before shooting again), the FPS can jump as much as 40-50. This is noticeable in the regulator pressure, which can creep up slowly to a max is you wait longer between shots. Watching it carefully, sometimes is "resets" the pressure within a second or so, while other times it rises slowly and takes 10+ seconds to stabilize. By stabilize, I mean over a short time. If I wait a few minutes, it will very slowly creep up a bit more. With it set at 2000psi, if I wait overnight, the regulator will usually go up to 2300psi or so. Additionally, I get what I think is a reasonably significant drift as the cylinder pressure goes down. When set to 2000psi with the cylinder at 4300psi, if I shoot down to 2500psi, the regulator will only show 1500-1700 (not always consistent, but consistently lower than the 2000psi set). This means that while I get 100+ shots on the regulator, speeds averages slowly drop over the string. Overall spreads for even 80 shots can be as much as 70-80.

Hopefully Umarex can help with the accuracy issue I am seeing, because I really like the Notos otherwise. It just struck me as strange that it is so much more consistent in FPS than the Avenger but significantly worse in accuracy. If that can be fixed, I'll definitely be shooting it a lot. I have been spoiled by the Avengers 100+ shots though. 20-21 between fills is nowhere near enough. I'm going to have to get a reserve bottle to do refills, because 20 shots is not enough at a sitting...
