Several years ago I bought 4 .25 avengers and loved the platform .
The rifles shoot so well it was time to tinker and fabricate some parts for it to make it better suited for bench rest shooting .
First to be modified was that factory barrel .. cute with the dimples and all it held respectable groups at 50 but I wanted that 100 yard accuracy .
So out with the old barrel and thanks to Wayne Reid at alien airguns a new lothar walther barrel was machined and installed .
This instantly shrunk both pellet groups and slugs were able to be used !
Wayne also supplied me with a new larger poppet valve and a big plenum ..
What a huge difference . I’m seeing a std dev of 1.4 fps or less in a typical match or 25 shots and few sighters we will call it 35-40 shots total ..
With these new mods I was running a dual regulation setup first stage was 2900psi and gun reg at 1100 this was enough to get 33.95 pellets to the 870 fps and shoot groups of 1” at 100yards .. awsome
On to slugs .. the lw barrel was unchoked and slugs shot great . We decided to push the gun to 2900 psi gun reg and shoot super heavy slugs 40-55 grains and was able to achieve a max ft lbs of 109 ft lbs .. respectively this power was not were the accuracy was and settled for a 80ftlb rifle which will do it all with well placed shots ..
Its shot a few bench rest sittings and kept up with the high dollar guns .
I then designed a bench rest stock from carbon fiber and abs . Modified the trigger , and built weights for the gun because by now the gun was about 5 lbs heavy and to light for bench .
Gun currently sits at 11 lbs without bipod and feels great to shoot .
A quick shooting session today on 50 yard bench rest small bore target yielded a 249 and 13x … not bad for a gun I bought for 350$ .(granted I put about 1k all together into it ) ..
Lesson learned if your a tinkerer,don’t hesitate to buy a budget gun and learn and build ..
