Benjamin  New Marauder

I have been wanting a Mrod but already have a full size rifle or two so I had no reason to buy one. Then Don in Va put this nice walnut bullpup kit up for sale.

Well that was all I needed. The stock arrived safe and sound and in beautiful condition. Thank you Don.

Next up, Marauder shopping…Airgun Revisions. If you want a bargain, that is the place to buy a referb. I ordered a 22 Mrod LW barrel for $300. I can not pass that up.

The gun arrived promptly and full of air. I took a few shots and wow, its a very nice gun as delivered. Thank you AR! I also ordered an SSG with the gun, so yes, a perfectly good gun, now take it all apart LOL. I also had to swap out the pic breech for a standard one. And while there backed the restrictor out.

I need to play with the ergo and the tune. I ran one shot over the china devise, CPHP @ 915fps. Very very quiet. I will tweak that down depending what pellet I end up with. I want to run 16 grain and under in this one. Depends what it likes, but if its like my 6 other Walthers, I will have choices.

Taipan  Taipan Veteran 2 (550mm) with 25.4g

Thought I would contribute some data to those interested in the Taipan Veteran 2 standard - 550mm CZ barrel.

At lunch today I stuck a target at a laser measured 49.3 yards from the front of my shooting bench - paper plate that shows each pellet hole was my intention.

Rifle: Taipan Veteran 2 with standard 550mm CZ barrel
Scope: Athlon Midas Tac 6x24 @ 24x
Pellet: FX 25.4g (FX branded MRDs)
Velocity: 842-851 fps
Distance: 49.3 yards - green laser measured
Wind: 2-3 mph

The orange circles are 1/2” diameter edge-to-edge.

After the 1st 5-shot group, I shot 3 shot groups so that the PoI of each shot could be seen better.

Many 100 yard benchrest shooters shoot this .22 25.4g pellet at 960-970 fps.

I hope my data shows that excellent results can be achieved with the Vet 2 and this pellet at a more “normal” velocity of 850fps.

With this pellet/velocity combination, my .22 Vet 2 is VERY quiet with stock moderator - and I’m comparing against 15 other PCPs. Very backyard friendly.

Conclusion: .22 Taipan Vet 2 550mm achieves excellent accuracy at 50 yards with 25.4g FX/JSB pellets at 850fps. My shot count is at least 60 (perhaps close to 70) with the regulator at 145bar. The rifle is quiet - despite making good power with these heavy .22 pellets.

Hope this helps those pellet shooters thinking about a Veteran 2 in .22 caliber.

FX  FX drs backyard friendly?

I've only seen one video of someone showing the dB of this rifle. It was upwards in the 100 range, and I've seen peolpe say its pretty loud. Has anyone done a sound test with a DonnyFl on it?

I'm still new to the hobby, and LOVE my Notos, but i'd really like this as my next rifle. The Notos is perfect for my backyard with sound, so I hope its not that much louder with a moderator. I also have my eye on a Daystate huntsman.. If that's going to be more quiet...

Anyone shoot these in their backyard without complaints? haha

  • Question
Tuning  Where are the "sweet spots" in air gun velocity?

Question: Where are the "sweet spots" in velocity when tuning a.177 or .22 air rifle?

Back story: While I'm "mechanically challenged," I'm trying to tune a .177 RTI Prophet Compact. The last owner used it for shooting slugs. I'd like to use it for pellets. (JSB 8.4s would be ideal.) I've had good results by adjusting my .22 rifles to shoot around 880-890 fps. At one time I owned a .22 Vixen that shot accurately at around 700 fps. And I assume that the high power rifles must shoot accurately at velocities above 890. So--generally speaking, are there multiple sweet spots in velocity, is there only one ideal velocity when tuning a rifle, or does it vary from rifle to rifle and barrel to barrel? Thanks in advance for your help.

Diana  Sweet Painted Lady

Just picked up this little old Diana. It's a D24 .177 cal with a white factory paint job and a 'Star' moniker plus snazzy stripes added to the usual outfit. These guns, alongside the Diana Sport (brightly painted D34's), were all the rage for a short while in the later 80's, in Diana's attempt to meet 80's esthetics / buying audience. I used to see these in airgun ads back then, as a school kid, so, there's a measure of nostalgia working on me here. I already own a blue Diana Sport, and now I have a little sister for her.

If the 80's paint job wasn't enough to tell, my new gun is stamped Made in West Germany; the tiny 04 / 89 (88?) stamp at the back of the receiver brings the dating job home. This gun was apparently made mere months after my blue Sport.

The D24 lacks open sights, which is a bummer. The factory sights in these 80's guns were MUCH better than what's presently available as replacement parts, or on new guns.

The barrel and the receiver are somewhat beat up, a little rusty, the bluing has worn off in several places (a first for me), and the 35-y-o. paint job on the stock has chipped on almost all edges, in addition to many scratches. It really wasn't the brightest idea Diana ever got, in terms of longevity.

The gun cocks and locks smoothly and solidly, after all these years. I haven't had a chance to shoot it yet. I don't think anyone has been inside this gun since it left the factory.

The Diana has a T01-type safety and a trigger adjustment hole in the trigger guard, which both promised a good, adjustable trigger, like in my Sport. But the trigger blade is a stamped steel blade without any adjustment possibility. The trigger seems to have a long first stage and something resembling a second stage wall just before the trigger goes all the way back.

With the not-so-hot external condition, I paid just a small sum for this gun, not enough to buy a Chinese entry level rifle new. This is still a German gun under the paint job, something that can shoot with terrific accuracy for a really long time.

At this stage (and in the pics) I have scrubbed the gun's metal parts with Ballistol-soaked 0000 steel wool, adjusted the overly tight pivot bolt and cleaned the barrel with both dry and Ballistol-soaked patches. I want to see how the old girl shoots as is before taking the (likely very) tired powerplant out.

Pyramyd Cup

Am I the only one or is the reporting on the Pyramyd Cup results as bad as I think it is. There are snippets of information scattered around this forum that I just can't find. I've found some good videos on Instagram but when I click from one to the other, I can't get back to the one I'm looking for. There are really bad reports on the BR and FT results too. There are posts, showing in random order, shooters and their scores. No final list showing the results in order. I've finally said to hell with it.

Jbravo103 and I went to one of the bigger pdog towns we have permission to shoot at today.

The day started out cool and foggy.
20240915_090348.jpg

But turned out to be an excellent day for shooting, light wind and 85°.
20240915_115629.jpg

The closest shot was 26 yards.
62697.jpeg

We had a few shot from 40 to 60 yards.
20240915_111458.jpg

A lot of the shots were 80 to 125 yards
62693.jpeg

With the long shot of the day was 150 yards.
20240915_132209.jpg

The prairie dogs were pretty wild and after a shot or two, whether a hit or a miss they would go down their hole and stay down.
All in all we had a great day shooting.

Inexpensive but pretty decent bipod

My main bipod is a Ajoite UUQ. It is kind of heavy but adjusts for cant plus length and angle and is solid. About $75 last time I looked. I wore out the female threads on the cant adjustment but a helicoil fixed that. I've never used a $300 bipod but I can't believe they would be worth the difference. The Ajoite is solid.

But I like having extra bipods to park guns on when they are sitting around and sometimes I shoot off them. I've been using a UTG "shooters swat" 6.2-6.7 inch bipod. It is the right height for me at my bench and isn't expensive. List is almost $50 but I've seen it for $35 recently. Today I got a copy of this bipod called a BZT101BP from BZTAC. Seems to be functionally equivalent and it was only $20 on Amazon. I mounted it on a rifle but haven't shot off it yet. But I am confident it will be fine with my PCPs. It is also much lighter than the Ajoite.

If you just want something functional and light it's worth what they ask for it. Even the UTG isn't expensive, however.

Huben  GK1 Issue Happened Today

Was shooting my GK1 today. I have it setup for a mere! 16 fpe and my tank was at 4k. Had it tethered like always. Last shot sounded strange then the air started exiting the barrel. Will no longer hold air and the magazine rotates with or without the lever up or down. Safety will not engage. Dammit. 🤬

How did I manage to screw up the pistol? I have maybe 1k pellets through it. Dammit. 🤬

Wonders come in small packages!

Just received my new Garmin crony and give its first job to check my Beeman 2027 pistol. I did make several adjustments during my testing. 90 shots on one fill went to a total of 90! Min 479(at full fill) and av 652 and max 841 near empty. Of course I’ll have to make another test without any adjustments! Just wish I had purchased the crony sooner. What a little jewel it is. Kalibrgun  PCP Slug Gun- True effective range with slugs could be farther than we think.

Here's a paper target I shot at 300 yards with 5 - 5 shot groups on it. Conditions were very light wind.
This is the only target I shot to confirm that my slug-gun and slug were fairly consistent to at least 300 yards.

With a high BC 50gr. - .25 cal. slug I make and a custom slug gun I've posted about here on AGN , 300 yards isn't so far away.
2 groups were sub MOA, the other 3 groups were probably just shooter inconsistency. All were a bit high left, but fairly consistent.

This is what I consider the maximum effective range for this gun. Some light wind not really a problem at 300 yards.
This fragmenting slug still splits into 5 pieces at 320 yards, with acceptable consistent accuracy for Ground Squirrels. Just my opinion.
Sure it can shoot 500 - 600 yards and ring steel plates. But the wind will always make these yardages less than "truly effective ranges" to me.
300YardGroups2Cir.jpg

These groups make it easy to see why I get bored shooting at an 8" ( 2 MOA) round steel plate at 420 yards, because I almost never miss it.

New one… Last one

New one 😁 Last one ☹️

For decades I had one airgun for plinking, pesting and hunting, a Feinwerkbau 124. About 15 years ago the 124 needed a new piston seal. While searching for a replacement part I bumped into the world of modern airguns and got seriously infected with the bug.

Now, 25 + airguns later, I have a couple of airguns for every discipline that I’m interested in. I’ve called “last gun” several times and managed to keep from purchasing anymore until I saw what I think is going to be the ultimate squirrel stalking gun.

My "last airgun" is a .22 caliber/600 mm FX DRS Classic fitted with a MTC Copperhead 4-16x44 compact scope. I’m pleased and impressed with it; at 6 pounds, 10 ounces, I love the light weight. I'm getting about 35 shots on a 230 bar fill.

We’re still in the break-in/honeymoon period; she’s shooting decent groups and doesn’t seem pellet picky at all. JSB 18g (925fps); 15.89g (960fps); 14.3g (990fps) are stable out to 30 yards with the factory tune.

I’m pleasantly surprised on how nice the synthetic stock is. The balance and ergonomics are good for me so the DRS points well. The cheek comb seems to be designed for 50 mm scopes and high rings. I may try a set of medium rings to lower the scope a bit.

Future plans include detuning the DRS from 33 ish fpe down to 15-20 fpe (depending on what it likes) and making a snap-shooting “skeleton” style stock (kinda like the straight grip and weight forward balance on a shotgun) out of birch plywood.

Now to get ready for the squirrel season! 🙂

Cheers!

Umarex  Replacement umarex notos barrels/nightmare installing plenum kit

Trying to install the c88 machine plenum kit, not going well on removing the moderator. Trying my best to protect the barrel but started going angled. I must have removed about 0.016in (0.43mm) of material. Hopefully not enough to ruin the barrel but not a good amount to lose.

I wish it were easier to remove these as there really aren’t any guys out there showing how, and unfortunately I don’t own a lathe, know anyone with one, nor is there anyone that offers services with one within a hundred miles of me.

If you try to mod your notos, beware this is what may occur, as I took my tame patiently but an ever so slight error may have costed me a barrel, and a notos

Airgun shooting for people with PTSD

Hello, I run a small airgun sales place and I am veteran myself. I personally know several veta with PTSD who used to enjoy guns but not so much anymore. I don't really want to directly ask them because that kind of thing can be a touchy subject. I was wondering if I should try to contact my local range and kind of host a day where I take a good bit of stock there and just let vets shoot for free. I think a lot of people out there that struggle miss shooting but don't trust themselves around firearms. I am thinking PCPs would be a way to get them enjoying shooting again without having the firearm struggles.
