RAW Rapid  600 shots never cleaned !

Got my RAW hm 1000x lrt 22 mid January. Was anxious to set it up and try it out. Installed an Athlon ares 15-60. Put it on the bench gassed it up and shot away. So now it’s about 600 shots. Yesterday was trying the JSBs, JTSs , and AEAs. Am using Ballistic-X to measure center to center. Only 13 yards in cellar. After a few not so spectacular groups with the JSBs 25.39 managed a .036 . The AEAs and JTSs usually shoot better than the JSBs .The AEA 21.9s best was .043 and the JTS 22.07 also at .043 . I’d say without calculating the average of all is around 0.100

Nothing has been in the barrel other than lead.
So the question is will I notice anything at all with a cleaning ?

RAW Rapid  HM1000X with BR stock

Had a long session at the range, doing some testing with my HM1000x and it's new stock
IMG_0543.jpeg

Most of the shooting session was like a whirlwind ..pellets all over the place.
I lost track of which holes belonged to which target..it was a mess
IMG_0546.jpeg

Don't know how many tweaks and turns i did, but happy with the final targets of the day the best grouping was at 1/2 moa
All of this was done at 100 yards at an indoor range
My HM1000x is a custom build from Martin with a cut-rifle barrel . Don't really know the maker of the barrel for certain, but i have my guesses..Martin won't tell me
The Hm1000X is a .22 cal using JTS 22.07g
Still need to test out more stock placements on the rest and bag

The mystery of the tiny tick marks solved

i have a few scopes that i bought second hand. a few of them had something in common - a tiny little nick / tick mark on the bottom of the beveled portion of the forward bell. Honestly I never gave it much thought, until this morning when I realized that this nick / Tick mark was the result of a previous owner mounting the scope too close to a pic rail, as in perhaps less than zero clearance!
Thus when they tightened the scope rings down to spec, it pressed the bell into the pic rail; obviously this is very bad!
Hmmm?
Guessing here, but this is Probably why they didn’t “like” the scope as this would certainly create several challenges for a proper functioning scope and thus accuracy issues if the scope was being tweaked or torqued.

How far can an airgun be modified?

How far can an airgun be modified before it can no longer preform properly/efficiently?

As a designer by trade (retired) I learned long ago that products are typically designed to a specific set of parameters to achieve a particular performance. It's kinda like the "aim small, miss small" thing.

As an example, some products are very specific (like a 10 mm wrench) that do their designed task very well. Others (like an adjustable wrench) can do a range of tasks adequately. Then you have similar products (like ViseGrips or pipe wrenches) that can accomplish the task (here I'm using a 10 mm bolt as an example) but do the job poorly.

Wrenches have a small window of functionality to work. Other products can have a wider window between to little, too much, and optimum.

So in a PCP, things like the bore volume, plenum capacity, transfer port, and valve/hammer/spring are all carefully designed by engineers to a specific FPE performance.

In my preferred caliber (.22) that would (typically) be 30-33 FPE for standard power PCPs; 45-50 FPE for high power PCPs; 65-75 FPE for bench and slug guns.

Purchasing airguns for their optimum performance is the reason/excuse I have so many. 😉

For discussion, say that a PCP platform is optimized for hunting and was designed for 50 fpe. It would be ideal for heavy .22 caliber, light .25 caliber projectiles in 25-35 grain weights.

This (finally 😁 ) brings me to the question:
How far can a PCP be modified before it can no longer preform properly/efficiently?

I'm using everybody's favorite loved/hated caliber swappable, uber adjustable PCP, the FX Impact as an example ( I have a MK2).

We've seen FX tweek the Impact platform (by our insistence) from a typical 30 FPE pellet gun (MK1) to a 50 plus FPE slug gun in the MK4 by making design changes.

So what happens (to the performance) when someone takes a MK1 and doubles the power to shoot .30 caliber slugs or castrates a MK4 to shoot .177 pellets at sub-12 FPE ?

I think that the further you get from the design's intended performance, the less efficient it will be and the more trouble will be found.

IMHO, setting up an Impact MK4 for sub-12 performance is like removing 6 sparkplugs from a 8 cylinder engine. It's going to run rough, don't complain about it.

Agreed, there are people shooting heavily modified .177 caliber MK4s and getting incredible groups at 100 meters. It can be done - but is it a good idea?

As an old guy who is sensitive to mechanical things, I prefer to buy the right tool for the job rather than misusing/abusing one. Springers in .177 and .20 are great low power airguns, in larger calibers PCPs work very well at high power levels. Are we getting confused?

Anyway, does any of this make any sense to you?

What do you see as "normal" in airguns, where does it cross the line to "extreme"?

...Done rambling, have a great weekend eh!

Cheers!

UTAH AIRGUNS NOW CHARGING SALES TAX?

Utah Airguns is now charging sales tax?
I was looking at making a pretty hefty purchase from mdt “the competition chassis brand” but they were sold out of something I was interested in well I remembered UtahAirguns also sales their stuff and sure enough they had the item I was interested in so upon placing it in my cart and getting around to checking out I was kinda stunned that they were charging me sales tax because over the years they never did which is one of the really cool bonuses when shopping with them. so if the item on the website was 100 bucks you paid maybe $12 in shipping and so it’d be $112 dollars NO sales tax. So yeah I was pretty bothered that they started doing that it’s probably because of some law I really don’t know but it’s definitely gonna impact my purchasing decisions from them in the future because they don’t necessarily have the fastest shipping times so that combined with the sales tax does annoy me. But dont get me wrong i respect what they do for the airgun industry and the community and I really think they are a great group of guys and I’ll still shop there and support them regardless because they do a lot for us they are the US Fx airguns service center and that’s a big responsibility and they have a big team that cares about the sport so yeah I’m definitely not done doing business with them I just wanted to point that out it does suck but hey it is what’s it is maybe they’ll go back to not charging it who knows. UPDATE I live in California and I was wondering if maybe changing the shipping address did anything and yup it does they are charging just California customers sales tax no other state! That Sucks if it’s some legal reason I get it but man that’s some bs!

Little BIG things

I’m somewhat detail oriented.

i keep data cards for all m Airguns on 5”x7” index cards - a second set of these cards are kept separate from my Airguns for a couple of reasons:

#1) inventory / insurance in the event of loss 😳

#2) quick reference to details in the event I have to break the gun down for repair. allows me to return it to previous excellence

#3) to examine for a ready reference when I’m away from the gun and I am contemplating how to improve its performance.

#4) various dope data with various pellets

i always make 2 cards. One I keep in with the gun in its own little special box and the other in my fireproof safe.

One of the young guys I shoot with keeps his on his phone and in the cloud - I’m old school.

how about you?

JSB Pellets - Ordering different pellet diameters

Looking more closely at the offerings on the www.jsbdiablo.com website, I noticed that there were dropdowns for the head diameter of the 5.5 (.22cal) Exact Jumbo pellets. Under that dropdown, I found there were 5.500, 5.510, and 5.520 diameters available. Weights were 1.030g for all. I receive an email from:
Jan Rys
Sales and Marketing Director
Worldwide Operations
Air Chrony & Tactical EVO
E-mail: [email protected]

Who informed me that:
"Hello, yes there really are different sub diameters of 4,5 and 5,5 pellets.
Unfortunately, in the case of .22 Jumbo pellets, we do not hold a stock of other diameters. Only 5,500 at stock.
In the case you would like to order a specific sub diameter in bigger quantities, we are capable of ordering them for you."

Am I the only person who didn't know about this?

Probably......

Air Venturi  Avenge-X .22 Tack Driver.

Well day one with my new Air Venturi Avenge- X .22 cal. , about all I can say is Wow , super accurate and very fun to shoot, didn't get a full day because of rain, got almost a half day, took about 7 or 8 shots to get my scope dialed in, probably fired around 80 to 100 rounds today, first 5 shot group after zeroing the scope was about .07 inch at 15 yards, second 5 shot group at 15 yards was less than a dime practilly just one hole enlarged by each shot, still have the rifle on the factory settings just like I received it , averaged between 875 - 898 fps tried 3 different rounds today, JSB Exact Jumbo Heavy Diabolo 18.13 gr. , H&N Baracuda Hunter 18.21 gr. , JTS Dead Center 18.1 gr. , all 3 deadly accurate, shot about the same, on day 2 tomorrow will be going to 25 to 35 yards and further if I have time, will be trying some more different ammo also, to sum it all up I researched the Avenge- X for weeks before buying one and so far it has been as good or better than all the reviews, it's deadly accurate, and a real joy to shoot, and with the 400cc bottle seams like you can shoot forever without having to air up, see enclosed pictures of the very first 2 five shot groups, looking forward to another day tomorrow.

Beeman  Old pellet tins

Anybody else save old pellet tins? I did because I thought they might come in handy for storing small items, but now they offer a window into the early days of “adult airguns” in the US. They are also a testament to the marketing genius of Robert Beeman, with special properties ascribed to each style, like better penetration with the pointy ones, or the edge on the ram jet that would turn a glancing hit into a knock down blow. I do miss the larger selection in .20 caliber however, only JSBs available these days I understand. Fortunately I still have a good supply of CPs and JSBs in .20 to keep my Daystate going, plus a spare .177 caliber barrel if I get desperate.

Snowpeak  Pinty Bullpup

I was just over on GTA & saw someone has received their Pinty Bullpup. It's also called the QM-23. I included a video of it's disassembly. There are more videos on YT. I like that it has the same trigger set up as my P-15. Very easy to adjust. It also shows that it is regulated. For the price I think i'll give one a try.

N/A  .25 vs .30 bullpup

So getting back into airguns for the year, I decided I have too much over lap with what I have and am wanting to get something different. I haven't owned something larger than .22 in 4-5 years at least and I would like one. I don't have alot of experience with .25 to be honest. I think one would probably be better than a .30 for me but when I've owned a .30 in the past I really enjoyed them. If I go .25 I want one shooting a 34gr at 880fps ideally or a .30 would be 44gr at 880fps. I'd like some recommendations on some bullpups that aren't 4ft long lol.

PCP Rifle  SOLD Vulcan 3.30 500mm $1200 w/mod shipped or Trade

This lovely 31" rifle is a compact beast. Gets about 50-60 shots from 300b to 150b.

*EDIT*
The Statement above is old, I have recently tuned the gun to shoot FX hybrids at 921fps and the reg now sits at 160b. Also the tube has been flipped to work as a plenum, so I get about 5 mags now before having to refill the gun.

I'm selling because for my pesting job it's just too much and I've found myself having to go back to the car to put it away to grab a less powerful gun to do the job due to target background. Sad, as it handles amazingly with the 10x44 Vector Veyron gun weighs under 8lbs naked.
after all.

Comes with 2 mags, agt mod, gun bag, and accessories the gun came with.

Asking $1200 w/ Mod shipped, scope not included. Or Trade, show me what you got.
