If you don't want your targets running into neighboring properties.

If you must dispatch an animal with an air gun that you want DRT a good 0.22 or better that can reliability penetrate the skull and reach the brain is your best option. More gun isn't going to change a well placed shot to the skull with a decent 0.22. Even with big bores, If you take lung or heart shots there is a significant chance they will run 30 yards or more. Very few air guns have to power of these PB. and the PB often fail to deliver DRT hits.

If you don't mind your neighbor finding dead, or wounded animal in their backyard, please disregard this post.

What first caught your fancy?

I went through several high end guns. Eventually, the taipan vet long was that gun. Didn’t even really “feel “ it at first, but it grew on me and still does to this day. The epic 2 is the other. Same general mold. Others had serious quality stuff, just some didn’t grab me. I know “Leon” will be here with the BRK Atomic, and rightfully so! There is no judgement, what was YOUR gem?

HW/Weihrauch  Who says springers arent accurate?

I was testing pellet sorting this morning and the HW97 was fantastic. I was shooting from a rest. Top row was sorted pellets, the bottom row was the rejects. Both were pretty good but the sorted ones were a little more precise with fewer flyers.

25 yards, three shot groups so I could see all the shots.

Other  Too many springers

So....

A simple little question:

Who here has too many springers?
And if your answer is "yes", when did it hit you?

Keep in mind - I'm not Big Brother and this is just a hot stove conversation, not an interrogation. 👍
Its more like looking at The Five Stages of Springer Addiction. I'm thinking this would be #4...

#1. Introduction to Springers.
(The discovery phase)
#2. Acquisition of many Springers.
(Gunsmithing your own Springers)
#3. Acquisition of top quality Springers.
(Moovin' on up.....!)
#4. Realization of too many Springers.
(NEVER!! Never, I say...!!!)
#5. Acceptance/Dispersal of Springers.
(A man's gotta do what a man's gotta do)

Personally, I'm at Stage 2.5 and working hard to avoid 4 & 5...!

Tuning a PCP

My Artemis (Snowpeak) M22 is quite pellet picky. It shoots H&N Baracuda 18 the best when tuned at about 110 bar reg pressure and that is at 940fps, just below the max speed of 970fps.. One hole at 25 meter, 10 - 12mm at 50 meter and so on. Some other pellets are doing OK but not as good. JSB 18.13 never did good with this rifle. Well, I increased the pressure to about 160bar and changed to a stronger hammer spring. It does not have a plenum gauge so it is a guess according to shooting string to see when the speed change. I tuned it for JSB 25gr pellets and it is doing good, not as precise as the H&N but good enough. With the same reg pressure I tried JSB 18.13 and turned down the hammer after every few shots to se what happens. To my surprise it settled at 920fps and was doing very good at 25 meter, much-much better than it did previously. I did not check longer distances as the wind was strong and gusty and the longer ranges are not as protected as the 25 meter range which is sheltered between buildings and trees. The max speed with the JSB on this reg pressure is 1080fps, thus the 920fps is 160fps lower than the max. This is a bit confusing to me (I am still learning and will till the end) as the general rule is that a good tune is supposed to be somewhere on the knee, just below the max speed. With the reg set at 110 bar or other lower pressure the JSB 18 would never shoot good, no matter matter the speed and how much I adjusted pressure and hammer.

Question: Is this normal for some rifle / pellet combinations to shoot precise that much below the max speed, way below the knee?

N/A  Thinking About Returning to PCPs

About 10 months ago I almost got back into PCPs. Currently I have an AA TX200. I went through a bunch of different brands/models over a 10-year period which ended about 4 years ago when I got tired of chasing air (2 hour round trip) and couldn't keep my Omega Super Charger running; Daystate, FX, Air Arms, and my favorites the Steyr Hunter Scout and LP50 HP pistol. I sold them all and didn't take a beating.

I see some good reviews on a few more reasonably priced, dependable (?) compressors; Air Ventura Rovair and GX CS4-I.

It appears PCPs have gone up in price and the used market seems to be holding up pretty good (great for seller, but....well you know).

My interest is plinking to be competent squirrel hunting. I'm pretty sure I'm going for a Charlie Frears Cricket. I like the 25 carbine except for its 46" length - I'd rather have 30-36" OAL). The Mini with skeleton stock looks good too. The Brocock Ghost looks pretty nice as does the Cricket Tactica.. However, I think I'd like to keep everything under $2,000.

I know the Taipan folks are extremely pleased and if it weren't for what seem to be blocky stocks I'd be more interested. I don't want a gun I have to tinker with (that's why the Steyrs were so great).

Any input is welcome.

Thanks

Hey, you RC guys....

I have a drone (Phantom 3 Standard) that I'd hoped to use for airgun hunting & spotting prey on the larger permissions I have. Unfortunately the camera gimbal isn't functional but everything else is! I decided to get a new drone for hunting but was hoping one of you RC guys might PM me & let me know where I might sell the old one (LOTS of extras, 2 batteries, camera lens filters, carrying case, extra blades, etc.) A little help, PLEASE!
MODERATORS: I know this is kind of off topic but kind of not (pertains to airgun hunting). I'm NOT trying to skirt the rules here. Didn't know where to post this on AGN or IF it's OK to do so.

Airgun Ports and Efficiency

What is airgun efficiency? It's calculated based on shot count obtained within a specified pressure range at the average energy over said pressure range. How can we manipulate efficiency?

Efficiency is directly tied to many things, from barrel length, to plenum volume, however the most crucial, and the one I'll discuss briefly is port diameter. Efficiency in itself is a non-linear bell curve, meaning at plateau (peak obtainable fps) it'll be at or near its lowest efficiency, and as you detune / reduce the power of an airgun, the efficiency will climb, that is until you reduce power so much, efficiency will stagnate and then decline due to other losses overcoming the reduction of air being released, primarily, projectile to bore friction, and projectile break away friction.

The further from plateau (peak fps) you tune a gun, the more efficient on air it becomes. Plateau is decided by many factors, but the critical one being discussed which can easily be manipulated via a velocity metering screw, a quarter turn valve, a drill bit, or rotary tool, is the port diameter.

This means, that a .22 cal ported to 70% of bore @ .154" will be less efficient at ANY equal or less power level compared to another otherwise equal .22 cal ported to 85% of the bore @ .187", however, if tuned to its plateau, the 85% bore ported .22 cal will begin to consume more air, as its Mass Flow Rate increases and loss always outpaces gains in efficiency the more energy you attempt to extract from a given airgun.

This does NOT mean your average user should go full bore porting, or even close, without extensive knowledge of an airguns limitations, from loading a pellet without causing damage, to what other obstruction in the system may limit the port diameter equivalency at that particular section of airway.

The caveat to de-tuning further and further from your plateau, is that fps from shot to shot (extreme spread) will likely increase without some sort of mitigation (valve lift limiter, and valve balancing via closing force/opening force ie valve spring/hammer spring balance), due primarily to variance in reg pressure from shot to shot, be it 1-2 bar or even .5 bar, from minor shifts in the energy produced by your hammer strike be it from surface quality, angle of gun, and even sear disengagement inconsistency.

There are two ways (that I am aware of) to calculate efficiency, thermal, and volumetric, however if you were to graph both, the change in efficiency would appear identical. So identical structure, just different numbers which represent said structure, or plots.

Volumetric efficiency is commonly expressed as fpe/ci (or for some, joules/cc), where as thermal efficiency is simply seen as a % value of energy obtained from the overall energy released. Most airguns operate around 25-30% thermal efficiency when tuned well, which translates to approximately 1.3-1.6 fpe/ci.

However, when tuned to absolute plateau, or peak fps, the efficiency is generally .9-1 fpe/ci, or 15-18% thermal efficiency. The difference in power from a 1 fpe/ci tune compared to a 1.3 fpe/ci tune is marginal, between 5-10%, however the difference is efficiency in 30%, meaning you only have to sacrifice around 5% of your plateau to potentially increase your shot count by upwards of 30%. This not only increases efficiency, but also tames the shot cycle, as you will notice less recoil due less air being lost when exiting your muzzle...as well as less overall energy being initially released into the bore.

This means that, if you plateau at 35 fpe, you're ejecting around 233 FPE through your valve, however, most of this energy is lost thermally before the projectile absorbs it, and the remainder is ejected from the barrel as the pellet outpaces it. Insane right? Even when tuned efficiently at 30% thermally, you are losing around 82 fpe and ejecting a total of 117.

The difference in 117 fpe being released from an airgun valve and 233 is, a lot, and there is without a shred of doubt, every single shooter will notice the difference between the two tunes.

Food for thought. Hope you enjoyed the read and have yourself a great day!

FX  New FX Panthera Hunter Compact 22 Cal. jamming JSB Hades pellets & wobbly FX Factory Folding AR 15 style Stock adapter.

I purchased the FX Panthera Compact in .22 Cal with the folding Factory Dynamic folding AR 15 style Stock adapter and Sliding UTG Buttstock. The FX Compact was selected and purchased after seeing the video posted by Justin at Utah Air Guns. In fact, Utah Air set it up to match what being demonstrated by Justin's gun.......with the only change being the scope selection. The rifle is lightweight and accurate for my purposed use as a squirrel buster for typical 15 to 50 yard shots. My Panthera Compact was set up and tested by Utah Air to shoot .22 Cal JSB Hades 15.89 pellets at approximately 890 FPS. I purchased 4 extra FX new style with thicker lid magazines too. The gun is accurate and lightweight.

However .......about every 25 or so pellets that are shot.........the feed from the loose pellets in the new style deeper FX magazines lids.... jam...... kinda crooked and will not feed into the hole (breech) of the rifle. When i remove the magazine, the pellet is kinda crooked at an angle in the magazine and stuck. I have to poke it with a wooden chopstick to get it straight and then reinsert the magazine into the rifle.

Does anyone else have this feeding issue?
It seems to me..... there is too much room inside the new style Panthera magazine for the pellets and the thicker lid needs to have a deeper ring inside the cover to reduce the space and keep the pellets held tighter.

I also own a FX Crown .22 Cal with the older thinner magazine lids and have never had this issue shooting the same Hades pellet.

I called Utah Air, and the gentleman I spoke with said they never have this problem with the Panthera.
Hummmmm........

Also, the FX Dynamic Adapter has an excessive amount of wobble, so the Buttstock feels loose in that folding part.. Does anyone have any suggestions how to tighten that up?

Thanks

Does pellet testing make sense?

We're seeing new brands and models of pellets being offered these days which is is great. Competition and choice is always good.

I've seen a couple of videos/blogs where people are evaluating and testing these new pellets in their "known to be accurate" airguns.

This doesn't make sense to me as the airgun is the biggest variable.

If we have a non-adjustable airgun we go through the process of finding the "golden pellet" that is most compatible with that particular airguns' factory tune and harmonics. Sometimes slightly different manufacturing tolerances will even cause airguns off the same production line to prefer different pellets.

With tunable airguns we can adjust the power to get excellent performance with a particular pellet.

Some airguns are less "pellet picky" than others but in both cases (fixed or tunable) we can't randomly choose a pellet and expect it to perform well.

So what is the purpose/value in "testing" pellets? The new pellet being evaluated may or may not be compatible with that particular airgun through no fault of the pellet's design or manufacture.

I think that you can check a pellet's quality to see if it's consistent in weight and size and inspect it for imperfections and cleanliness but you can't "test" it because the testing is only valid for that particular airgun.

Seems to me that the caveat "your milage may vary" strongly applies to pellet testing.

Don't know, am I missing something obvious?

Cheers!
