Does pellet testing make sense?

We're seeing new brands and models of pellets being offered these days which is is great. Competition and choice is always good.

I've seen a couple of videos/blogs where people are evaluating and testing these new pellets in their "known to be accurate" airguns.

This doesn't make sense to me as the airgun is the biggest variable.

If we have a non-adjustable airgun we go through the process of finding the "golden pellet" that is most compatible with that particular airguns' factory tune and harmonics. Sometimes slightly different manufacturing tolerances will even cause airguns off the same production line to prefer different pellets.

With tunable airguns we can adjust the power to get excellent performance with a particular pellet.

Some airguns are less "pellet picky" than others but in both cases (fixed or tunable) we can't randomly choose a pellet and expect it to perform well.

So what is the purpose/value in "testing" pellets? The new pellet being evaluated may or may not be compatible with that particular airgun through no fault of the pellet's design or manufacture.

I think that you can check a pellet's quality to see if it's consistent in weight and size and inspect it for imperfections and cleanliness but you can't "test" it because the testing is only valid for that particular airgun.

Seems to me that the caveat "your milage may vary" strongly applies to pellet testing.

Don't know, am I missing something obvious?

Cheers!

Beeman  New 2027 pistol!

I have a hard time trying to figure out how a $170 pistol can be more fun than a $800 gun , however I’m loving this low cost pistol! I have a number of pistols scopes , both on and air and on on pb and have never been too happy with them. And fiber optic sights on a pistol just doesn’t work for me. So I mounted a BSA compact rifle scope on it and a target never stands a chance! Ha.

JSB HADES vs FX atomic... A WTF for me.

I've used .22 JSB Hades.. now 4 tins of 500 thru my notos. Absolutely pinpoint accurate. This last go around fx atomic were $2 cheaper. And in my experience with .25 the FX 25.4s shoot just as well as the JSB exact kings. Same with the heavy mk1 s.

These atomics are ALL OVER THE PLACE. And it's driving me insane. Even as much as 2" at 10y. What in God's name is going on? It's not the gun because it shoots the JSB EXACT JUMBO, JUMBO HEAVY and JTS dead center 16.08s LIGHTS out. what on earth could be going on?

Has anyone else had this experience? I thought they were the exact same thing

FX  Finally shot my DRS

So, as the title states, I finally took out my DRS. It's a 600mm walnut .25 caliber. I would've shot it sooner, but I wanted to oil the stock, wax the barrel and install a carbon barrel liner. I was a bit rushed because my kid wanted to shoot his bow this evening. We're doing some shooting for his birthday this weekend so I thought I should at least get it kind of sighted in though.

I paced out about 35 yards, drew a 1/4 inch-ish dot on a miller lite twelve pack box and taped it to a stick I stuck in the ground. Shooting offhand, with 25.4gr FX pellets, my first three shots were about four inches low. My first impressions were that the gun is light. Like really light. It's going to take a little effort to hold it steady. And it's a little loud but I was expecting worse. I'd say borderline backyard friendly, but I live in a small town out in the sticks. That trigger is almost too light as well. But I think I can get used to it. I just wasn't expecting that when I took the first shot.

Then I clicked the scope up. Took a few more shots. Still a little low. Adjusted the scope. Two more shots. Getting close. Couple more clicks. The last four shots were in one rough hole I could cover with a dime. Might need to go up one more click and one to the right, but it's good enough for now.

I guess the bottom line is if this gun continues to shoot like this, it's definitely a keeper and the squirrels should be terrified.

Getting into slugs. What slugs are you shooting?

So just want to know what slugs folks are shooting out there. If you could, can you post what slugs, cal, gun, grouping/range, and price you are shooting. Also if you have links to the slugs you are using, please post.

I've only shoot nsa slugs 36.2 gr .25 cal. Before that was jsb kings mk2 pellets. My gun fx impact mk2 slug liner A, twist 1:20. Grouping 50 yards about an inch. At 100 yards 1 1/2 to 2 in group.

PCP Rifle  SOLD BRK Ghost high power silver addition .30 cal

Selling my Brocock Ghost Silver edition high power in .30 cal. The gun is practically brand new, only been shot maybe 5 times. It comes with a M-LoK Arca Forend Rail, the Biathlon Cocking Lever and the Mamba Lite 14-16x42 scope by MTC Optics’s. Oh and a silver OdB 160s with 1/2 UNF Silencer as well. Everything was purchased through Airguns of Arizona so the scope was mounted and sighted and the gun tested by them. I’m only selling my gun because I just purchased a new home and spent more then I planned on so now I have to sell my toys to furnish my home. This is not a scam and will prove it any way you would like me to. Thanks and I’ll take $1800 for everything but I have to be firm at that price considering it’s brand new and you’re getting over 3k worth of gun. But if you really want a great deal for $2200 I throw in a brand new umarex ready air pcp air gun compressor and a brand new never been attached high capacity filter as well. That’s over $800 worth of stuff so half price. But will sell the compressor separately. And I remind you everything is brand new and anyone in the St Augustine area is welcome to test it before they buy.

Benjamin Match 177 - Issues?

Now that these have been out for awhile I wanted to get everyones feedback.
Ive shot a crap load of these, maybe 6,000 rounds, and am still not decided.
I have good days and bad. Some days it seems these pellets are dead on and others I get fliers.

This weekend one day I was getting fliers, like 1.5" at 50yds and then I cleaned the barrel and seemed to help a lot.
I had just recently polished this barrel and have only put a few hundred rounds thru it before this cleaning.
I polished it to try and figure out if it would help with the inconsistency.

Ive have people say they tested with weight and head size sort and also got fliers in small batches.
Thinking maybe the harder lead compound is either building up and leaving a deposit somewhere in the barrel causing an issue for other pellets behind it? Ive heard from several people the buildup left behind is hard and not to use these but sometimes they just seem soo good.

Im getting in consistent accuracy results over a long period of time. Either its all my barrels or the one thing they have in common, these pellets.
I know some who refuse to use them and others who love them.

What are others thought and experiences?

Other  HELP - to choose another weapon

- Snowpeak P35X 5,5 mm
- Reximex Tormenta 5,5 mm
- Umarex UX Exclusive Notos Carbine 5,5 mm
- BSA Brigadier MB HP 5,5 mm
- JTS Airacuda Max, 5,5 mm

N/A  What are your thoughts on this pcp?

Seems like a great price.

Air tank questions

I'm looking to buy an air tank. All I see are the 100 cu in, the 74 cu ft, and 98 cu ft. Sorry for the ignorant question, but why isn't there anything between 100 cu in and 74 cu ft? I'm looking on Amazon and they have 30 cu ft tanks but are only CE certified and NOT DOT approved. Are these ok to use and fill by myself? Or should I avoid them? I'm hoping to find somethin in the 30 cu ft range so I can bring it small game hunting in case I need a refill. 100 cu in might be too small... 74 cu ft is too big. Any shop that sells 30 cu ft air tanks that's DOT approved? Thanks!

N/A  What sub $1000 .22 should I buy?

I am looking for a PCP .22 that I can shoot at targets (or the occasional tree rat that is chewing up my garden).

Here are my loose criteria:

1) ~$1000 budget for just the rifle, but will not be disappointed if I spend less.
2) A magazine--a side lever would be fine, but I do not want to single load every shot.
3) A regulator.
4) A decent sized tank--I do not want to be constantly refilling the tank.
5) Looks--I prefer traditional designs over bullpup. I don't mind synthetic stocks, but I do not like ones that feel too lightweight.
6) Reasonable accuracy. I have traditional firearms that I shoot when I am at the ranch so I am not particularly interested in 100 yard+ accuracy. I think I will be satisfied with an inch or so at 50 yards.
7) Relatively quiet--it needs to have or be set up to accept a moderator.
8) I am open to used rifles, but I have no prior experience to guide my evaluation of used guns.
9) I would like to keep it sub 8 pounds sans optic--the lighter the better.

Googling around, it seems like the Avenge-X with a wood stock and the larger tank, may fit the bill. Also, the DRS and Dreamline look interesting.

I welcome your input.
