Offhand practice

In preparation for the AZ State match this weekend I forced myself to start a little abbreviated offhand practice regimen not quite two weeks ago.

Typical for most of us, I don't love offhand shots, and don't often practice them. So I went into this somewhat curious if semi-regular offhand practice would improve my shooting, or if ability/inability to shoot offhand is just inherent to muscle tone/skeletal structure/etc. I tend to believe that we get better at any thing we do repetitively (practice).

Used the pistol and the rifle that I'm planning on shooting this weekend.
PXL_20240915_003155414.jpg

Any pistol offhand is tough. But the porky little Veteran is an offhand challenge. Was joking with a buddy during this experiment/practice that the Vet in the chassis stock is like trying to shoot a cinder block offhand.

Each day I took 15 shots from each gun at a one inch orange sticker placed at 25yards.

No additional offhand practice on all but one of these days. Sometimes I was putting lights out and doing it at 10pm after work. Had a few days in there were I was sore from processing a couple pallets of firewood. That was interesting, to see the effect of sore muscles on trying to be stable from the offhand position.

Shared in the order they were shot.

So what'd I learn? First, there's just as much swinging around in the sight picture now as there was 11 days ago before doing this. However, it was very apparent during the shooting that concentration CAN be improved. And I mean con concentrating on timing the trigger pull with the reticle being in the correct place, "drive-bys" if you will.

It's also a delicate balance between being quick on the trigger when the crosshairs are in the right place, versus being TOO quick and pulling the shot. You'll notice some of the pistol groups have a rightward migration/tendency....yep, I'm right handed.

As for the pistol...I don't feel like I got anywhere with the offhand pistol shots, but certainly feel more confident with the rifle now.

And perhaps 10 days/sessions simply isn't enough to make huge leaps and bounds. Realistically, I used up what little dedication I had to practicing offhand in one fell swoop, and I don't plan on practicing even this earnestly anytime soon.

Since forced position shots, specifically offhand, seem to be every ft competitors bugaboo, thought it'd be interesting to share here.

Brocock/BRK  Pathfinder XR an under appreciated gem…

When I first received my Ghost Carbine, for a while I thought my Pathfinder was in jeopardy of being sold. Then I downsized the scope and fell in love again. The Pathfinder is but a smaller Commander or Sniper XR. With the TP on low, sending CPHPs, it has been stellar from 25 to 64 yards. Sure kills on small rodents out tp 50 yards. My groups at 25 yards with CPHPs when “I’m” on point? Simply… 💥💥💥 And while I really like my Ghost Carbine she is a portly gal, even in its carbine configuration… I have an Athlon Helos 6-24x50 atop which adds mucho weight. Am still in the process of sussing out da Ghost. The Pathfinder is an under appreciated, seriously capable PCP, first shot this morning? Dead on, second shot after an eight hour workday? Dead on… Am lucky that my trinity is composed of two Atomics, a Ghost and Pathfinder… So I get to contrast them at will. At the moment the Ghost is struggling to find it place in my repertoire… When the Pathfinder had the Aztec Emerald 6-24x50 it was simply too portly as opposed to the sweet WHT 3-12x44 it currently sports…

Organic Reactive Targets

I put in a lot of pickling cucumbers and yellow summer squash this summer and after putting up 18 quarts of fermented dills and giving them away I still had a lot. I don't eat summer squash because it has no flavor, but I know people that do like it. I had a lot of them that I could not get rid of. By now I think you know where this is going! A ripe Boston Pickling cucumber is about the same size as a squirrel body. Way more fun than paper or steel!

Alternatives to foot pounds of energy (fpe)

An often discussed topic is what sort of caliber do I need to hunt coyotes. Or squirrels, or rabbits. There are tables that show a person's opinion but many of us disagree with at least portions of the table. Another way of comparing is to calculate the fpe of a gun and compare that. Like I have had good experience with 22 and 177 caliber pellet guns at about 18 fpe but not so good experience with lower energy in both calibers. Perfectly reasonable way to communicate.

But airguns have to deal with the fact that our power source is really high pressure air but it is at hugely lower pressures than powder burners. A rimfire can be over 24,000 psi, for instance with center fires often over 50,000 psi. To compensate more powerful airguns go up in diameter. That makes sense because the larger diameter provides more surface area for the lower pressure to push against.

But then how do you compare larger diameter potentially heavier airgun rounds to smaller diameter potentially lighter PB rounds that are moving at much higher velocity. FPE can be used but many feel it puts too much emphasis on velocity. The velocity is squared in the formula. Elmer Kieth is an old gun writer that liked large diameter handguns and felt they had much more effectiveness in hunting than the fpe would predict. He is just an example, others believe heavier slower moving projectiles can work effectively and more effectively than the fpe would indicate. John Taylor was an old african hunter and poacher who came up with the Talor Knock Out Factor. I believe Chuck Hawks came up with the killing power formula. These are alternatives to fpe which place less emphasis on velocity.

Knowing this the spreadsheet I use to look at shot curves calculates fpe for each shot but also the Taylor Knock Out Factor (TKO) and the Rifle Cartridge Killing Power (KPS). I do not think either are necessarily better than using fpe but they are alternate ways of looking at the rounds effectiveness. I calculated the following comparison:

22LR target round with 40 grain bullet going 1040 fps. Energy 96, TKO 1.31, KPS .431
35 grain 25 caliber going 950 fps. Energy 70, TKO 1.2, KPS .275
45 grain 30 caliber going 900 fps. Energy 81, TKO 1.7, KPS .41
50 grain 30 caliber going 900 fps. Energy 90, TKO 1.93, KPS .5
81 grain 35 caliber going 700 fps. Energy 88, TKO 2.8, KPS .8

As you can see, a 25 caliber airgun would have to be very powerful to challenge any of these factors for even a target round for a 22lr. But a 30 caliber gets close on energy, is higher on TKO and a little lower on KPS. Perhaps the biggest illustration of the difference in these values is for the 35 caliber. This is a pretty low velocity 35 and it is still lower in energy than a 22lr but significantly higher on both TKO and KPS. There are on line videos of the use of the Benjamin Bulldog in 35 caliber on deer and African plains game. Power was probably pretty close to this 35 caliber example. But it worked. I don't think most would body shoot any of that game with a 22 lr unless they had to. Just another way of illustrating why the other factors may make some sense.

Solved! Large FX Impact POI Shift Issues (Impact from Hell)

I've edited this to fix the several spelling and grammar mistakes. I feel really dumb after reading them all. 😂 Sorry to anyone that had to read the original post...

Hello! I'm new to the forum, but this seems like the best place to get advice. I am not new to airguns, but I am new to the FX Impact. I work on all of my guns—centerfire and air—and have never had this many issues. I'm almost ready to throw it in the trash.

I am including all of my problems, even though they might not be related.

Some Backstory:
I bought a Demo FX Impact M3 .22 600MM from Utah Airguns a few months ago and have had nothing but problems with it. It seems that every time I buy an airgun from them, there is some major problem with it. I guess I haven't learned my lesson. To start off with, my "functioning gun" came with a junk regulator (4 disks flattened and caused severe reg creep). Then I installed a new Huma regulator. It was also missing a few random parts that have been replaced. I installed a Slug Power Kit and had several issues with power consistency. I have since removed everything, but the hammer weight. I have installed a STX heavy barrel liner and a carbon fiber barrel sleeve. I have lightly glued the ends to keep the sleeve from moving. At some point the valve rod bent (not sure if it was like that when I received it or after, but it has since been straightened out within a few thou). The first stage of the trigger sometimes gets hung up and won't reset. It will then proceed to fire when on safe. I have tried adjusting it, but the issue always comes back. There have been a few other problems, but I'm sure you guys don't want to read an entire book.

I currently have about 450 slugs through this liner. I am currently shooting NSA 31.2gr @ 990fps. My tune is 1st reg @250 bar, 2nd reg @ ~173 bar, front valve adjuster @.404, macro @14, and micro @ 4.375.

Now to my current problem. Every time I take the gun out of its case (after sitting for a day), my zero/point of impact is severely off from the day before. It seems to trend down and to the right about 2" at 40yds (my zero). I have had some extremes as far as 4 inches to the right. I check my velocity every time I take it out, and it stays within 5fps of 990fps. I can refill my bottle and shoot as many rounds as I want, and it will not return to my original zero. When I put the gun away for the day, I lay it down on its side on a foam pad. There is nothing that should be tweaking the barrel. The temperature and humidity have stayed roughly the same throughout all of this. I have tried retuning my gun a few times, and it doesn't seem to improve my situation either.

So far I have done the following to try to help remedy the poi shift.

1.) Carbon Fiber Sleeve (I have never tried shooting this with the factory o-rings)

2.) Ensured that everything is torqued to spec (scope base, scope rings, backbone, pic rail, barrel clamp, set screw that attaches and holds down the barrel by the transfer port.)

3.) Put on a trusted scope that has never had any issues before.

4.) Retuned the gun and ensured that nothing was getting bumped.

5.) Checked weights and lengths of slugs to ensure I wasn't getting weird seating depth issues. Also includes making sure slugs are clearing the transfer port.

6.) Swapped to 25cal Donnyfl moderator in case it was clipping

7.) Used gauge pins to ensure slugs aren't clipping shroud.

8.) Holding the gun in many different ways (I have heard they can be hold sensitive)

9.) Removed all o-rings touching the outer sleeve of the barrel

Some potential issues that may be causing it

1.) The carbon fiber sleeve has about .010 of play inside of the outer sleeve. (Should it be a light press fit?)

2.) The scope rail does not allow for centered scope rings on the tube. The front ring has about .100 of clearance from the turret. It is currently sitting in the only place for proper eye relief.

3.) Possible bad o-ring that I can't find. (I have taken the gun apart several times and can't seem to find any that are bad.)

4.) The entire barrel system (related to the carbon fiber sleeve fitment)

I'm sorry for the rambling, but I am at my wits end with this rifle. Has anyone ever had this many issues with POI shift? How were you able to fix them? It would be nice to know why you decided to change the part(s) and how much it affected the outcome. I'm willing to try just about anything at this point. I don't mind spending money to fix it, but I am also getting really sick of dumping money into it. I haven't contacted Utah Airguns about this issue, but I will not be doing that. That's a story for another time. I have debated on putting an Airmarksman backbone on it, even though it doesn't seem to be hold sensitive. I have also considered sleeving the old liner and glueing the carbon fiber sleeve to the outer liner, installing a tensioner, or machining a solid barrel. This is a hunting rifle, so I don't want to add a bunch of weight to an already heavy gun as I walk several miles every time I go out. First shot accuracy is very important to me, and I can't trust this rifle, which is a shame as I hadn't heard of anything negative about these guns until I really started researching the issues I've had.

I've attached a picture of my scope mounting so you can see what I am talking about.

Thanks for the help!

N/A  PCP shotgun options?

I’m looking at pcp shotguns. I live in South Dakota so it would get regular use, especially with pheasant season right around the corner. Tons of birds are making their way into our pasture and tree line. I know I will be able to get a few with my rifle since they are often in my yard and on the edges. At the edge of my property there is a gravel road, directly on the other side is corn fields very high traffic area.
Shotgun would definitely increase my chances and would make it a lot more fast paced and fun.
So far I’ve found 3.
Seneca wingshot 2
Serpent arms 550
Umarex primal
Does any one have experience with these models and have any opinions?

HW/Weihrauch  HW90 Locking up

Recently acquired early series HW90! During the cocking cycle when RETURNING barrel into closed position it jams on the return. Check the stock screws, no interference, seems to be the chamber and the bottom of the breach block rubbing and locking up

Anyone else have this occur and know solution please

N/A  Average Distance of your shooting sessions?

Threads like this always get me to wondering as to why some buy “airguns” to try to consistently and practically shoot at 100 yards. Unless you’re putting in lots of time and effort and equipment prep. Or are a competitive shooter with great equipment? Your on a wild goose chase…

Not saying that some guns and shooters aren’t capable of sending consistently good groups at that distance. It just not the norm for the majority. I can shoot out to 100 yards in my backyard and spent a lot of time trying to to achieve good groups for the N.U.A.H. Club challenge at GTA. It took weeks of sending to finally get the right conditions for me to achieve Master status… But to what end for me personally? After that endeavor I deemed that for myself? I was done trying to chase MOA at 100 yards with my PCPs… I’ve killed pigeons out to 100+ yards. But found through experience that I prefer to shoot and pest out to 60-70 yards…

99% of my shooting is from 25-64 yards, at those distances the hits on objects the size of a chipper’s head are consistent. Out to 100 yards and beyond? Even mildly windy conditions introduce lots of variation in the flight of pellets… And yes, I’ve read about the slug hoopla. But the majority got into airguns for their short range practicality sending pellets. Simply finding it amusing (in a good way) the fact that some enter this hobby searching for 50-100+ FPE PCPs to shoot at 100+ yards…

Pumkin Carving Time Is Here.

Yes yes I know it's a little early but it's always something I wanted to try and figured why not be ahead of the game. Scope used is the DNT Optics ThermNight TNC225R which was mounted on my Huben K1 .22 set at 20FPE. This was alot of fun and really enjoyed it. Make sure you check out the DNT line and feel free to use brawler10 on your purchases.

  • Question
Stoeger  Stoeger XM1 Bullpup How Tune Down?

Recently acquired the Bulllshark in .177. Actually shoots quite well for it's price. It currently shoots around 1100 FPS w/ crossman premier HP too hot for my needs. I'd love to be able to get this thing down to under 800 FPS. Is that possible and how? I can't seem to find any tuning instructions on this specific rifle. I'm assuming this can be adjusted via hammer spring tension and or regulator adjustments, but have no idea where to start. Any help appreciated.

Kalibrgun  The Cricket Carbine, or There & Back Again

My favorite misfit from the land of bullpups (eastern/central EU) is the Cricket Carbine. Have spilled enough virtual ink here & elsewhere on the net explaining why, so will keep it simple here: more than any other rifle - air or powder - it just fits me. Saw a while back that @Georgia Airguns had some left in .25, at a reduced price. Life got in the way for several months, but finally settled down a bit... figured now was the time, as they probably won't be available much longer. Mr. Frear did the voodoo that he do on one & sent it my way.

Very little wind late yesterday afternoon, so pellet testing was on. The test target Charlie sent with the gun showed FX/JSB 25.4 & JSB 33.9 MKII shooting very well at 40 yards, with JSB Hades also showing perfectly acceptable hunting accuracy. Tested 5 kinds of pellets (FX & JSB 25.4 = same thing different wrappers). Apparently this barrel will shoot well with anything pellet shaped & .25 caliber. The biggest group, at a lasered 100 yards, was barely over an inch & a half. Will let the picture tell the rest; as the late, great Paul Harrell would say- you be the judge.

1000004016.jpg

Been doing this long enough to know that one five shot group is only the foreward, not the book. That said, it’s clear this one is a shooter! Two manufacturers, two lead alloys, three weights, and four shapes... dang.

Side notes:
  • This is my first rifle of ~half dozen that has shot any of the AEA/JTS offerings worth a hoot. Almost didn’t order any due to previous poor results, but glad I did. Don’t’ get me wrong, the others in .177, .22, & .30 had great weight/head size consistency, it just didn’t translate on targets. Rifle barrels being rifle barrels, no talking them into it with statistics.
  • 25.4 pellets were moving at ~950 fps, & the 33.9 at ~845. Didn't chrony the AEA 29.5.
  • All shooting done with JB3D single shot loader, clever design that works well.
For the immediate future, going with JSB KH MKII. Taking it to a UFT match this weekend, not sure I can get dope & still have enough of the AEA 33.9 to complete a 60-shot match (only bought one 150 count tin). Or that I could get more before then. After this weekend, will do a more thorough shootout among the three heavy pellets before stocking up on the winner.

Obligatory eye candy photo of the rifle below, with SFWA SS 12x scope & Warne medium rings.

Matching slugs to barrels- A perspective

Now the pursuit of accurate slugs that certain shooters want for their respective rifles is a real effort. Which strategy works best? Fastest? Do we use random size diameters, weights? Brands? Main consensus is grab several different weights, diameters and brands. This can get pricey and very labor intensive. I personally got sold on matching barrel diameter and matching close as possible. This eliminates 80% of available slugs and greatly reduces experimental costs and yield faster results. Others may disagree, but that’s my humble stance. Now this seems to apply to standard barrels, polygon barrels do better with smaller diameter ammo than their diameter would indicate.

Crosman  What is the Crosman 760?

My dad passed away a couple of years ago and mom took over the household, including his guns. She died recently and I was given his air guns. He was a Crosman multi-pump fan so 3 of the 4 were Crosman, and one is a Daisy. I was able to rebuild the 766 and 2100 (essentially the same).

The next is to look into the 760. But, there are a number of versions of it so I don't know what it is to find an exploded diagram or parts. Here are some pictures.

Beeman  Now I have two 🙀

I have ordered a number of the Beeman pcp and wanted one of several. Today my Commander in .22 came in and when I went to store the box I saw another box just like this one🤨. And starting to look for the other one and I was. Setting about 6 feet from it and sever more. Don’t know how I missed when I thought I had carefully check what ones I had. Anyway isn’t two always better than one. Charles
