NOTOS 1 ...KITTY 0

I was in the kitchen cooking then looked out the window and saw my cat (actually kind of a wild cat that hangs around) crouched down at the corner of the shed stalking something. Grabbed the Notos, cracked the kitchen door open slightly, and stole the kitty's kill. Dropped without a flinch :)
I think the cat was so focused on the bird to the left, he didn't notice the bird I dropped on the right at first. Easy snack for him.

New interest in airguns.

Hi everyone. First post and just getting into AG. Been in the firearm benchrest scene for nearly five decades. Local ranges are closing so I'm looking at more backyard friendly shooting opportunities. I have a few AGs for the purpose of pest control and introducing kids/grand kids to shooting but am looking at something a little more upscale to scratch the same itch I had while shooting BR. Anyway, I narrowed down a few choices and decided to start shopping. Literally every site out there has no inventory. Everything is sold out and backorder only. I'm not overly inpatient. I've waited years for custom built firearms and was given that expectation up front by the builders but every seller of airguns is quoting '4-6 weeks'. No problem. I wait and three months later they are still saying 4-6 weeks. Is there something going on in the AG supply chain? If so, I'm an understanding person but am not used to be deceived (if that's what's happening). Before I get too excited about it, can someone fill in the gaps for me?

Thanks!

N/A  I think I may have a problem… (EDgun vs BRK)

…but, I mean, most of us do, right? So hear me out.

Had my eye on a BRK Sniper Magnum with the laminate stock in .22 for a few months but haven’t had any luck finding a used one and really can’t justify a nee one. I’ve almost jumped on a few other Snipers with synthetic stocks but haven’t yet.

In the meantime, I picked up a Lelya 2.0. It was a semi-impulse purchase as I was still looking for that BRK, but I’ve known of EDgun and the Lelya for a few years and always thought they were cool so I got it. I’ve only shot it a handful of times so far as life’s thrown our family several significant challenges in the past month and I simply haven’t had time. And time without any shooting is the enemy because then I troll the forums, including the classifieds (see where I’m going here?)… :ROFLMAO:

Enter the EDgun Matador R3. I’ve been watching a ton of videos on EDgun and have come to appreciate their overall simplicity and ease of maintenance, as well as their robust nature and unique Russian styling. There was an R3 in .30 here that I failed to jump on due to the aforementioned craziness in life, but I now have a line on an R3 in .22 and an R3M in .25 (both standard length) at what I think is a decent price. But I wanted to check in here first, so I have a few questions:

1) Current value in R3s seems to hover around the $900-1000 mark depending on a few things (condition, optic, etc.). Does that seem correct?

2) The .25 M models seem less valued as the mag advancement pawl is often the wrong one and you have to manually advance the mag or risk shaving pellets. Was a fix ever released, or am I stuck manually advancing the mag if “mine” is an earlier model with problems?

3) For those who’ve owned both an EDgun R3 and a BRK Sniper, which did/do you prefer and why?

4) Anything in particular I should be looking out for on the EDs? I know the .30s needed the 3mm valve stem, but does that hold true for the .22s and .25s?

5) Has anyone had luck shooting heavies/MRDs from the R3? I seem to recall reading somewhere that Ed used a tighter 1:16 LW barrel that should help with heavies, but I can’t seem to find it again to confirm.

Uses include hunting out to ~100y and target shooting/plinking out to ~150y. I value rugged simplicity, reliability, and no zero drift. I want to be able to pick the gun up and go shoot once it’s tuned and zeroed.

If I can secure the deal on these, then the BRK will have to be on hold for awhile. I still very much want one, but the R3s seem like classics with easy maintenance and I really like how they look, so if their performance matches my needs then I’ll be OK waiting a bit. Am I crazy for wanting these older PCPs over a newer BRK? And based on my questions, am I expecting too much from them? Thanks!

Losing interest?

Seems like others, including myself, aren't posting as much lately.

I've kind fallen off the last few weeks for various reasons, but a lot of topics just don't seem as interesting anymore. Old hat I guess.

It's also lead into me not tinkering or shooting as much either. The hot weather hasn't helped, and I've been busy with side jobs on the weekends that take up most of my time.

I just can't seem to get in the groove like I used too, and not much is getting me excited either. I've ran out of guns I want to buy or could afford, and I've got enough to cover the shooting I need.

Oh well, I guess the bright side is I'm not wasting pellets or splatter targets!

HW/Weihrauch  Humbled and Time to eat a little crow.

First humbling issue is using an artillery hold near the center of gravity. I've tried it on multiple guns with really no better results than my typical forward artillery hold. Therefore I've pretty much ignored the common CG recommendation. Wrestling with my 22 Weihrauchs at 50 yards has caused me to revisit the CG artillery hold. Target 1 is 10 shots with my normal forward artillery hold. Switching to CG on 2-6 showed immediate and marked improvement. To be sure I went back to my normal forward hold on #7. After confirming it doesn't I went back to CG on 8 &9. Only 8 is good. Somehow 9 was terrible. In fact one shot fell all the way down on the 12th target. After that I decided to try a different pellet

Just receiving a fresh tin of JSB 15.89s, I tried them with low expectations and my usual forward AH. Low an behold. All three targets immediately produced acceptable (to me) results for 50 yards. Throughout the years I've tested JSBs of this and lighter sizes in several Weihrauch 22s and never had great accuracy with them under 25 yards. In fact most of the time it was terrible. I was never sure if it was the pellet design or the perpetually bent thin skirts. They also don't make the power other stiffer skirted pellets do in Weihrauchs. So between low power, poor accuracy and lots of bent skirts I wrote them off.

Under 30 yards I've always had good accuracy and high energy numbers from FTTs. Since FTTs come in various head sizes that do make a difference in these rifles I've always touted them as the best pellet for 22 Weihrauchs. I'll have to eat a little crow on that now. These 15.89s are clearly more consistent and accurate than the FTTs at 50 yards. The JSBs still make less power (in this case 0.6 FPE) as I've experienced before, but at least I can stop pulling out my hair and hit the damn target at 50 yds. Just goes to show you're never too old to learn.

Be well all.
Ron

Oh the $$$$....

My goodness.

It really wasn't that long ago when the higher-end production gun starting points were in the $1,000-1,500 range. I remember even having sticker shock from that. That was a lot of money for an airgun. My non-airgun buddies used to think I was a crazy person for dropping that on what they saw as "pellet guns." But I would drop that occasionally. I felt the value was just barely there at those price points. Barely. Just enough to justify that incredible cost.

But now it looks like the new starting point for the higher-end guns is $2,200-2,500. About double the already astronomical prices.

I don't even know what happened. But these days I sure do find myself not buying the new offerings.

Did we do this to ourselves? Are the vendors just following suit with each other since we showed we would pay that as a community?

PCP Rifle  SOLD LCS Sk19 .30

This gun was set up sited in and taken rabbit hunting once and plinking in the back yard a few times maybe 500 pellets shot through it dead accurate and powerful. Full auto is a blast forgot it was on full auto and shot a rabbit at 40 yards and put 4 in him on accident. I hate selling it but need some cash for unexpected bills and have to let it go. A little dusty from being displayed I’ll dust it off and ship in its case other than that it’s like new condition.

Crosman has let me down. Whats the point if its all made in China?

Hi friends,

After buying many a crosman product, I decided to buy an additional 2240xl to replace one I gave to a friend. We'll, it arrived today and immediately after unboxing it I noticed how different it looked from all the other 2240s and 13xx series guns. The blueing, milling and barel finish were nothing like I've seen in a crosman product. It was a noticeable step down in quality.

When I cocked it, it felt gritty. And the trigger... wow. The basic 22xx and 13xx series are not good triggers by any means, but this was way worse. It felt like a box of rocks. I've had toys that had better triggers.

Then after further inspection I noticed there was no engraved text on the frame, just a gold paint with the model. Then, there it was sticking out. Made in China.

When did this happen? All my other 22xx 13xx to my knowledge are atleast made to some degree in the US. What's the point of buying a crosman product when other China brands are leaps and bounds above this flaming heap of a 2240xl.

Wow thanks crosman for all the good old times but this is my last product from them. I'll keep this as a reminder to never buy another of their guns again.

Something new from DonnyFL

IMG_1979.jpeg

We received a shipment at the shop today and wanted to give you a sneak peek before it hits the website Monday or Tuesday.

It’s a parts mat, cleaning mat, soldering mat, I’d even use it as a place mat if I didn’t want to get kicked out of the house.

It has more partitioned spots than a cafeteria tray, three magnetic spots, a built in ruler, removable 500°F rated soldering pad and the DonnyFL logo for good luck. I particularly like the slots on the left that can keep your screws in order for those bigger, multi-step disassembly projects.

N/A  Thanks KWK

I want to thank KWK for a tip he gave on another thread. He mentioned that bubble tubes worked well as homemade piston liners. I ordered the same ones he recommended and tried them today. I'm really happy with them so far. I cut up one of these bubble tubes and made a piston liner. They were easier to use than cutting up plastic drink bottles or the ptfe sheets I was rolling. My 22 HW95 had a little bit of twang left in it and now it's completely gone. I'll have to order more bubbles 🫧 for future guns. This was a great tip. Thank you KWK.
IMG_1780.jpeg

Same gun another issue. I've been struggling with POI shifts with this 22 HW95 at 50 yards. While apart today I noticed evidence of piston seal rotation. For good measure I replaced the piston seal with a fresh Vortek seal. Hopefully my POI will be more consistent. I scrubbed and polished the barrel last week and lost a bit of power and now its a bit slower yet. New seals are tight. It's at 660-670 now. I'd like to see it back to 700 after the seal breaks in and the barrel completely seasons.

Need to be active for classifieds.

Just saying hello, I’ve fallen out of the air gun game for many years, i occasionally mess with mine but not enough for me to keep them. My plan is to list them on the classifieds and see if anyone’s interested in them, although it looks like I’m required to be active for at least 10 days. So here’s to day 1. The rifles i plan on selling will be..
